    Hey Gus,
I thought i had drafted my fantasy perfectly (I have one my fantasy ppol 3 straigh years so im no fluke at the game). However this year seems to be the worst year ever. Here is my current team
    C-Getzlaf
    C-Stall E
    C-kessel
    W-Heatley
    W-Perry
    W-Kotalik
    D-Chara
    D-Kareble
    D-Pitkanen
    G-Nabokov
    G-Ward

    Reserves
    C-Getzlaf
    C-Richards B
    RW-Perry
    RW-Zherdev
    G-Nittymaki

On paper i thought i was goin to run away with my league but everyone is slumping and kessel i managed to snatch of waivers. I need ideas for possible trades/ideas should i stapy put or should I trade some f my star players (ie Heatley) for players on the rise such as Vanek

    Hi, Jon.

I’m a big fan of of Goligoski, and have been touting his fantasy value in light of the injuries to the Penguins blueline. He isn’t lighting it up with only two goals in six games, but has the tools to contribute along the way. He’s a secondary scoring option at the moment.

I have to admit, I am not a big Brunnstrom fan. I always thought throughout the hype prior to signing with Dallas that he was a tad overrated and wondered why he wasn’t included in the Swedish contingent at the World Championships. Fantasy-wise, if he’s on your roster, with the freshness of a hat trick in the NHL debut still in the limelight, try moving him. (no mention of being blanked the rest of the way, of course).

I think that Halak is the better goaltender, and to avoid any burnout, I think he gets more starts than Valiquette.

As for the Backstrom/Nylander conundrum I like Niklas over Michael. I think that he is reunited with Ovechkin at some point, and the youngster is too talented to not produce at a high level. Backstrom over Nylander.

    Hi, Mike.

Thanx for the laugh. Stupid keyboards…

I really wouldn’t be making many moves on the roster to be honest. Heatley for Vanek would actually be a lateral move, and not in your best interests.

But that’s not to say that you can’t at least gauge your rosters value in the eyes of other GM’s. It’s always good to have an indication of what your competition thinks of your players in case offers do start pouring.

At this point, stand pat, ride out some slump(s) if any, and judge again in a couple of weeks whether you really do need to move anyone.

You have a very good goal-producing lineup, which is a preference on my part as well, as its harder to generate goals than assists, but if you really want to see what I think about Zdeno Chara, make sure to check out my Week 3 Update on Mckeen’s Hockey Prospects:

    Toews – C
    Sakic – C
    Bergeron – C
    Michalek M – LW
    Nash – LW
    Cole E – Lw/Rw
    Alfredsson – RW
    Kessel – Rw
    Doan -Rw
    Miettinen – Rw
    Timonen – D
    Kuba – D
    Goligoski – D
    Coburn – D
    Brodeur – G
    Backstrom – G
    Miller – G

This is my lineup Gus in a head to head league, 6 stat categories for skaters and 4 for goalies.

With 10 teams in the league, there’s not a lot out there in terms of FA.

I’m simply asking what you think are the weaknesses in my lineup, any solutions? I’m currently in 2nd place and in past years finished in 4th and 2nd place. I’d really like to win it all, so your expertise would be greatly appreciated.

Wondering if I should keep all 3 goalies, or trade a forward for some help on defence. Every move matters, sometimes it’s better to be patient, it would appear that I have far too many RW.

Your advice is very much appreciated

    Ciao

    Good Morning Gus,
Thanks for your reply, just this morning i was offered four trades (ironic after everything was dead in my league and you told me to stand pat next morning its a fire sale) anyways here are the trades

    To Me: Semin(LW), Backstrom (G)
    Give Up: Heatley(RW), Ward(G)
    (This one is tempting)

    To Me: Hemsky(RW), Price(G)
    Give up: Getzlaf(RW), Heatley(RW), Ward(G)
(I want to this right now beause I would have nabokov and price but it seems so stupid)

    To Me: Markov(D)
    Give Up: Ricahrds B (C)
(I wouldn;t mind this because it would gives me one of the best scoring defensemen in my league plus i already have Karbele, Chara, Pitkanen adding Markov isnt bad at all plus Im pretty stable at centre with Kessel, Stall, Getzlaf, Mikko Koivou)

    To Me: Vanek(LW), Huet(G), Gaborik(RW)
    Give Up: Heatley(RW), Ward(G), Kotalik(RW), Zherdev(RW)
(This one makes me squirm because I have this real bad feeling that Heatley is going to slump all year this year, and Vanek is starting to reach his potential (50goals possible), ward for huet seems to make no difference but Gaborik really intrigues me because he will definately be traded to another team this year and is in his contract year and history shows players jumping ship in their playoff year typically produce abundantly)

I know in your last reply you told me to stand pat, but looking at these trades and my team (see above reply) is it worth my while to pull the trigger on any of these deals?

ps: If the leafs finish with the first overalll pick do you think they’ll take tavares or hedman, I have this weird feeling that hedman is good but not amazing aka daigle….it looks like the leafs will finally get a top 3 pick if they pick second I want them to get Brayden Schenn this guy si the total package, can physically dominate, score talented am I right in thinking that he is simliar to Jarome Iginla?

B Schenn could very well end up being an incredible talent. But if the Leafs are fortunate enough to select 1st overall, I’d make Tavares my pick. The microscope is on this kid and he hasn’t wavered, the media tries to knock him, but that’s only cause the expectations for him are so high. If a fire sale happens as many expect, the leafs may acquire a pick that could pottentially bring back a 1st round pick, at that time it would be interesting to attempt to trade to grab Schenn. If Schenn drops to 7th or 8th this could be feasible.

For Hedman regardless of his talent, the Leafs no longer have a glaring need for d men, with Schenn, Stralman and possibly Vorobiev in the picture, I don’t see the need to draft the big swede. It would time to get a forward.

Thanks for the quick reply. I also have Gonchar on (IR), what would you think if I offered a trade including a RW with Gonchar and sell the idea that he may be back in 4 months in return for a top d man. Does this make sense to you? Let’s say I’m targeting Boyle, cause I like his situation in SJ, what RW would I need to include in this deal?
Thanks in advance for your input

The leafs are well on there way to end up with a top 3 pick this year. What should make leaf fans salivate is the fact that I believe kareble and toskala will be used for a couple more first rounders (kareble more). If last years rumors were ture about Kareble for a first rounder and carter who knows what that could be this year, his contract is amazing and he’s in his prime years.

I havent seen pogge yet but if I were the leafs I’d bring him up round January and see how he fairs he looked pretty good pre-season however this is only possible if joseph gets injured. Toskala without a doubt would get us a first round pick and top prospect or a first second and blue chip prospect.

Either way the leafs if everything goes to plan look well on their way. Defense is stacked, goaltending with toskala is amazing and if pogge lives up tot the hype will also deliver. Fowards are almost set. I have to say hagman-grabovoski-kuelimen look real good right now I can only imagine if they develop even more chemistry and kuleimen and grabovoski continue to develop. Plus the leafs sre filled with third/fourth line checkers and role players a franchise centre and finisher would be amazing.

also i think the leafs should peddle kareble and maybe toskala to teams on the bubble like around 12th-9th and desperate to make the playoffs (ie columbus, maybe phoneix st louis)

    Hi, Roach.

I am assuming this is a single-season fantasy league and the reality is, I don’t think you’ll dupe anyone into grabbing Gonchar off your roster.

However, your goaltending is really deep. You can get anything you want if dangle any of your goalies.

If you’re dangling a broken Gonchar with a winger, and you were haggling with me, I would ask for Alfie no hesitation and no alternatives. I just don’t think you have a case here.

Gauge your value of goaltending and find your dman.

    Hi, Mike.

Thanx for kind words. Everyone and their mother – except mine – have a view on whether Schenn should stay or go. He’s got NHL ready skills, and is already proving his worth on the ice. There isn’t anything he could learn from playing in Kelowna – and could in fact regress due to a different coaching/team philosophy – although participating inthe World Juniors would be a good experience.

He should stay, but I would like to keep this a fantasy related space on this site and won’t expand too much here.

Schenn – who I like to call the ‘Big Dog’ (Schenn – French for dog ‘Chien’)

    Gus.

    Hi Gus,

I would like to know what you think of Kaberle’s fantasy value this year. If he gets traded to a strong contender, is it conceivable that he’d be a good pickup cause his fantasy value would rise? In your mind where does he rank in the offensive defensemen in the NHL.

    Thanks a lot

    Hi, Pete.

I had originally ranked Kaberle at #13 defenseman prior to drafting periods, and he hasn’t really done much to alter that ranking upwards. In fact, if anything, he’s dissapointed (7-1-1-2, 0PIMs and 9 SOG).

If he is moved, it would depend on the type of team that picks him up and esepecially how good/bad their PP is working for them.

Kabs has PP QB written all over him, has excellent vision, skating and passing skills but is an inconsistent defensive zone presence. Unfortunately, the Buds PP is horrendous and it’s hurting his value.

If I was a GM in a league that owns Kaberle (which I am), I would be looking to move him off my roster (which I am). Problem is, no one wants to give fair value.

This is the best case study of dealing from a position of weakness.

Having said all that, in reality, he is still a very valuable dman, with a favorable contract making him highly desirable.

His fantasy value will increase if moved.

    Gus

    Hi Gus,
thanks for the comments. If I traded Gonchar (IR) and Erik Cole FOR Kaberle or Visnovsky what would be your analysis on the situation. I have told them that I heard Gonchar could be back in 4 months. The Kaberle guy is interested, but thinking about it. No answer yet from the Visnovsky.
    Should I
    A) pull the plug on the deal
    B) Target one more than another
    C) other

Your comments are very helpful thanks

    Hi Roach.

Target your hottest offer if there’s interest.

Offer up Miller for Thornton first. He may be looking specifically for Brodeur.
