Yes or Nonis?

Brian Burke requests for permission from Ducks to speak with Nonis about a management position in Toronto.

Dave Nonis operated under Burke for six seasons in the Canucks organization until he became their general manager. After being replaced by Mike Gillis this offseason, Nonis joined the Ducks franchise as a senior advisor.

It is believed he will become the assistant of hockey operations in Toronto if the Ducks grant Burke permission to persuade Nonis in joining the Maple Leafs franchise. The deal will likely go down sometime this weekend.

This furthers the Maple Leafs continuation of adding hockey knowledge to their management. It is also believed Curtis Joseph could be asked to join the team on a management position sooner than later while Burke brings in another goaltender, but for now, Joseph believes he is only improving and it is only a matter of time until he gets his game back.

This would be a great addition for the Maple Leafs. I hope they give him permission, but does anyone think Burke will give Nonis the GM position and maintain the role of President?

Unlikely Eric, though I do believe the Joseph thing would be a good move for the organization as he would be better as a goalie coach than he would as a backup this year, but I respect Joseph for what he is regardless.

I think Joseph can definitely finish off the year. He’ll likely be around longer than Toskala will. But I like the way Toskala has been playing lately, maybe Joseph gave him some advice :P

Advice like what, here’s how you don’t play like me? lol maybe that’s why Toskala has been better lately.

Also, is it just me or is this organization just making all the right moves recently? I LOVE what this team has been doing.

Yeah, I’m still a little iffy on the whole Steen and Carlo for Stempniak deal beacue I don’t think he’s really as good as everyone though he would be, but maybe it’s just that he hasn’t had time to find chemistry with players yet.

    Georgie Says:

Could be that, but don’t forget that he already has 2 points in 3 games. That’s half of Steen’s point totals for the season.

    Eric Says:

Yeah, I hope he finds some chemistry soon though.

He will, it’s just a matter of time. More than anything, I want Van Ryn back in the lineup. I hope the Leafs keep him and trade Kubina or Kaberle instead (who are older than he is) cause I do think Van Ryn has more of an impact on the club than they do.

Burke has to stay on as GM, Nonis sucks compared to him as GM but Nonis is a good guy to have around. It was weird seeing Burke instead of Fletcher at the game last night but at the same time, I got excited. Good game, and good move by Burke, the first of many I’d expect.

    Great news.

A bright young hockey mind with a stellar draft record that can hopefully help out in that regard.

Minor concern for now: how many chiefs does one team need, and what happens when they disagree on something (as they inevitably will)? Power plays belong on the ice.

Nonis is the exact person to for the possition. Their use to each other and see things different. Its a great mix.

Burke wants people that will do it his way and it’s obvious Nonis is one of those guys. Having 3 experienced GM’s on board couldn’t be a bad thing at all, especially when they are all like the same type of hockey and players. Nonis will likely be assistant GM or something of that calibre.

Nonis refused to mortgage the future in Vancouver last year for Sundin to get them into the Playoffs. I believe he will take the same stance when he joins the Leafs in a few weeks…

I just love everything the Leafs are doing lately, and this is another example of what to definitely do.

So err… what happened to Nieuwendyk and Gilmour? I’m losing track of the management hierarchy and thats just on the hockey ops’ side!

    Corey Eves Says:

Great Post Mikey, CuJo will more than likely take over the goaltending coach position or atleast co-coach it not sure who the goalie coach is currently, secondly Nonis should be a great add to this team,

Richard-Steven Williams, Nieuwendyk is the leafs assistant GM and is getting taught by Cliff Fletcher and now Brian Burke. Doug Gilmour was a assistant coach for the Toronto Marlies untill he left about 2 weeks ago to be the head coach of a team in kingston or windsor, not sure where

Yeah, Dougie is coachingin Kingston now.

Yea, the leafs played a good game tonight and apparently the ducks have agreed to let burke talk with nonis.

Now you come to mention it I remember reading that Gilmour had gone to coach in the OHL. How would Nonis and Nieuwendyk fit, one an advisor one an assistant? Whats the one about too many cooks spoiling the broth?
