Question Period – Leafs Edition

Ten questions for the fine folks at MLHS:

1) Niklas Hagman (8G, 19PTS) is on pace for 26 goals and 62 points. Do you think he is capable of keeping that pace? If not, what kind of stats do you see him finishing the season with?

2) Mikhail Grabovski is the leader in rookie and Leafs goals with 10 tallies so far this season (on pace for 32 G and 59 PTS). Do you see him as a potential candidate for the Calder Trophy?

3) Vesa Toskala, despite letting in five goals against the Sharks on Tuesday, has been improving his game progressively since last week. Do you think he will finally regain his form, or will this season be an up and down ride for the Finnish goaltender?

4) What do you think Brian Burke’s first move as Leafs GM will be?

5) In your opinion, was the hiring of Burke a good move for the Leafs’ future?

6) Are you satisfied with the coaching of Ron Wilson so far this season?

7) If you are Burke, do you bring up goaltending prospect Justin Pogge as the Leafs’ back-up next season or do you leave him for another year in the AHL?

8 ) If the Leafs manage to suck as bad as the Ottawa Senators (high five!) and find themselves drafting 1st overall, would you choose Tavares or Hedman?

9) What players are you expecting to be moved at the NHL Trade Deadline?

10) If you were GM, how would you re-shape this club?

I’m Ron Guillet, you stay classy, MLHS.

    Good questions, Ron…
    1. I see Hagman carrying that pace this season, finishing with around 60 pts.
    2. Grabovski will fade near the end of a grueling season, and will be in running for Calder, but won’t get it.
    3. I’m hoping Vesa keeps it going well, but there will be stretches of inconsistency.
    4. Burke’s first move will be trading Kaberle or Kubina after Christmas for an impact forward.
    5. Yes, Burke will stir things up.
    6. Yes, Wilson has done a fine job so far with what he has to work with.
    7. I would keep a close eye on Pogge’s progress this year and then evaluate in the summer. If he progresses, bring him up.
    8. I would take Hedman over Tavares. I think he is the better player.
    9. Toskala might well be moved if the Leafs aren’t fighting for a playoff spot.
    10. Draft well next year, build D around Schenn and Finger, and sign a decent scoring winger going forward.

    1. Absolutely, Hagman has been our most consistent forward and I expect him to finish in the 60-70 point range.
    2. I would think that Grabovski would have to increase his overall output. While the goal amount he is on pace for is likely to decrease a bit, if he can buffer that with an increase in the assist area and achieve 60+ points you’d have to think he’d be a serious contender.
    3. I expect Toskala to hit his stride soon, and be consistent thereafter, much like he was last season.
    4. Peddling one of the Czech blueliners.
    5. His pugnacity pleases me…we’ll see what he does.
    6. Absolutely, I’m loving what he is doing.
    7. Depending on his performance, I could see Pogge with us next year.
    8. A tough call, hopefully Tavares can rise back to the forefront of the scouting charts to make the decision easier, because at this point I think we really need an offensive stud, but it would be tough to pass on a player that many acknowledge is simply superior in Hedman.
    9. Any of Kaberle, Kubina, Toskala, White, Ponikarovsky, Antropov and Blake (in my dreams) could be moved.

    1) Hagman will definetly keep this pace.

    2) Grabs will be a condidate but he won’t win.

    3) I think he will have a good stretch here and there, hopefully enough to get a good return on him.

    4) Waive Blake, trade Poni.

    5) Yes, this team is going to be tough as nails and fun to watch!

    6) Yes, he makes the team work and if you don’t you ride pine! He knows what buttons to push to make guys think they are always on the brink or a pressbox chill session, it seems to have worked out for Matt Stajan.

    7) If Joseph doesn’t turn it around then you really don’t have a choice. Best case scenario is Toskala gets traded and Justin gets a real taste of the action… what have we got to lose? It either helps us get a better draft pick or let’s us see if Pogge is the real deal.

    8) That really is a tough one because I haven’t seen Hedmen play… I’ve seen Taveres on TV a few times and in the WJC but he didn’t really impress me. The way Hedman sounds i’d go with him… but I will trust scouting on this one.

    9) Antropov, Poni, Kaberle, Kubina, Toskala …. maybe stajan since he’s not gritty enough and is having a career year.

    10) Trade for picks and draft. Sign some UFA’s….. rinse and repeat.

    1- Absolutely. Hagman for Captain!

2- If Grabs is not a Calder candidate, then something is seriously flawed…

    3- I’m thinking up and down…

4- Hopefully, getting another right handed forward.

5- too tough to tell. I do know, we’ve had worse GM’s.

6- Yes. He’s been consistent, and capable of getting some great performances from the Man-Grabs-Lemon line. Also, Van Ryn was really blossoming under Ronnie…can’t wait till he’s back.

7- Bring him up. Make it a 70/30 split to begin, then perhaps, in the new year ease towards 60/40 if he’s playing well.

    8- Tavares.

9- Depending on how they’re playing, and depending on the return it could be a combination of Toskala, Kaberle, Poni or Antropov.

10- My 1st order of business would be in either trading for, or drafting some top 3 forwards. A #1 center is an absolute must. Stajan can’t keep up this pace…

    1) 20-25 goals is reasonable. Much of that will depend on his ice-time remaining the same. If his defensive play continues to be reliable, he should remain on the second line. Also, Grabovski’s game will impact his numbers as well – will Grabovski hit a wall, or can he maintain consistency in production through 80 games?

    2) Grabovski is a dark horse for the Calder, and will receive consideration so long as he can avoid hitting the “rookie wall” and remain consistent through 80 games. Watch out for Stamkos, though, he may get hot as the season progresses and his ice time increases. Oscar Mollar may also present a challenge – he is getting more noticeable with every game.

    3) Last season started out the same way for Toskala. Slow start, people questioned the acquisition, and then he got hot. I would be inclined to wait until mid-season to make a judgment on him … I will say that given the rebuilding process, an up-and-down year should be expected of anyone between the pipes, this season.

    4) His first trade will be to acquire more grit up front. The Leafs, despite some courageous efforts, have been pushed around in the corners and in front of the opposition’s net.

    5) Yes. I don’t know if he is the “savior” he has been touted as during the past year of speculation, but at least he brings a sense of stability and confidence to the position. Confidence was lacking during Ferguson’s tenure, and stability has been an issue during the “interim-status” era of Fletcher Redux.

    6) He kicks a** and takes names, which is exactly what a young squad searching for an identity needs. Chuck Norris would be afraid to cross this guy.

    7) If Pogge has a decent season this year, he should be given a definite chance in camp to prove he belongs in the NHL. At some point, he needs NHL experience to take the next step in development … and for the team to find out what he is made of. By next year, he will have had enough Pro experience to have earned at least a shot at it.

8 ) I would trade the 1st pick and stockpile. I think the Leafs would do better, from a rebuilding standpoint, to get two or three very good players, as opposed to one player who *might* be great. Tavares’ stock is reportedly in decline … so that may bear monitoring. Hedman could be great, too … but I would rather pick, say, two of Jared Cowan, Nazim Kadri, Brayden Schenn, Evander Kane or Ryan Ellis. Long-term, a balance of talent across the team will lead to greater success than one star-potential player. If Tavares were of Crosby-Ovechkin ilk, I’d take him … but I see him as a notch below those two, so I’d rather trade and stockpile.

    9) Leaf players dealt at the deadline: Kaberle, Antropov, Ponikarovski for sure. Kubina if the deal is right. Some salary would have to come back, though, if both Kaberle and Kubina are to be moved.

    10) Trade veterans for draft picks or young players with expiring entry level deals (e.g. Staal or Kessel). Draft philosophy focus on trading down a top pick in order to acquire a number of “B+” players (as opposed to one “A” player). Work to build depth at all positions via the draft (which means avoid RFA signings like the plague). UFA signings would serve two purposes: add grit/character, and meet salary cap floor.

In reference to #8 … remember how Burke was able to maneuver tp get two top picks to draft the Sedins? I would rather he try to do that, and draft two players ranked in the top 10, than to gamble on whether one of Tavares (declining stock) or Hedman (yet to play in North America) can ever meet their enormous expectations.
