How To Know You’ve Hired The Right Coach

This is interesting.

Per CBS Sportsline, in a recap of Monday’s win over Atlanta:

“Toronto improved to 8-0-2 when leading after two periods.”

I was not aware of that.  If there’s a better measure of a coaching staff and/or their system, I sure would like to hear it.

FYI another Statistical Roundup is on the way; it should be up shortly after the Stars game.

How about the Leafs scoring, what, 17 goals in three games? That is simply insane for a team with only “one top six forward”

Hmmm… that “one top six forward” line sure sounds alot like the line that came from a former player about Montreal early last year – something like: “they’re a team of all third liners”. Just look what it did to light a fire under them last year. I’m not saying that the leafs will go far with it, but it’s gotta be motivation.

Sorry Vesku at 2:30am that’s about all the effort I can muster.

Recharged today, so here you go:

    Leafs leading after 2 periods:

    2008-09: record 8-0-2, winning % .800

    2007-08: record 22-3-4, winning % .759

Which goes to show that Paul Maurice knew what he was doing, when it came to defending leads, also. I might add that I was not an advocate of his firing, although I will say that I was relieved to see that his replacement was another quality coach (Wilson).

Interestingly enough, the high-scoring Pittsburgh Penguins have only a .583 win %, when leading after two.

Haha sorry Garrett, I guess that could’ve came off as a slight against you but it was self-deprecation.

Really? 22-3-4? That’s hard to believe. It seems to me there were countless third period collapses

Vesku, it’s all good. And if I can drop the late-night gig, even better. At least sites like this and HB give me something to do on the job! :-)

I was surprised at last year’s stat, also. I think there were a lot of games lost last year that were tied after two where the Leafs took the lead in the third, only to blow it at the end. But, heading into the third with a lead, they were able to lock it down more often than not.

That Penguins stat for this year still raises my eyebrows … although I guess with the top two defenders hurt all year, that is to be expected.
