Columbus scouts eyeing a pair of Leafs

Here’s an interesting little excerpt from Eric Smith’s (Columbus Blue Jackets Blogger) blog over at Hockeybuzz, (props to TML35 for the heads up) that might spur a little armchair GM fantasizing:

“With the 2-0 start to the season hinging road trip, Howson looks like he is sharpening his pencil and putting the wheels in motion for a trade. The Jackets have 2 scouts in Toronto tonight and is a place where Howson might be able to pull off a 2 for 1 trade. Needing a center in a bad way Nik Antropov‘s name comes up in conversation. He would be a fit for the short term and if he fits in maybe for longer. Antropov will be a UFA at the end of the year. Antropov makes slightly over $2 million a year and will be expecting a raise on his next contract. The other player that has been strongly mentioned is Pavel Kubina. He is a right handed shot from the blue line that certainly wouldn’t hurt the Jackets power play efforts. He currently has 8 goals and 19 points with 5 of the goals and 10 of the points coming on the power play. He does make $5 million a year until the end of next season. That is the one big part that would make this team reluctant to pull the trigger on Kubina.

Who goes back in return? Would Pascal Leclaire be part of this trade? Would one of the young guns be part of the trade, say Jakub Voracek? The Maple Leafs are in the mode of rebuilding and under a youth movement. Especially with Brian Burke now at the wheel, he wants to put his stamp on this club sooner rather than later. Burke is always a guy that is known to be a bit of a wheeler and dealer. We will see.”

Very interesting. From the picture at the top, the message if fairly loud and clear. The Jackets have done enough bottom feeding and want to pull out all stops in order to get into the postseason, satisfy the fanbase, and generate some much needed revenue. We saw a similar situation a few years back in Atlanta where they paid premium prices for the likes of Zhitnik and Tkachuk to get that 1st ever playoff appearance. So now might be a great time for Burke to cash in a few assets for big returns and load up for a very deep 2009 draft class.

Let’s start with Nik Antropov. He’s a useful two-way, multi-purpose player who can pot you 30 goals and 60 points. He provides plenty of versatility, can play in all situations, and may mesh in nicely with superstar Rick Nash. In addition, his size, physicality and long reach would welcome in Hitchcock’s defensive system. How’d he do tonight? 15 minutes TOI, saw time on the PP and PK, recorded 4 shots, 1 hit, 2 giveaways and was a -1. With Stajan out due to injury, he was also given the opportunity to play center tonight and showed that he could handle it by winning 53% of the draws.

And Pavel Kubina? He’s big, reliable two-way defenseman that can give you 20+ minutes a night. Of the 6 top minute loggers on the Jackets defense, the eldest is Jan Hejda who is only 30 years of age and has zero playoff experience. Kubina’s got leadership ability, playoff experience, a Stanley Cup ring, along with the ever-coveted booming right handed powerplay bomb from the point. In fact, it was pointed out earlier this evening that he’s now scored 15 goals over his last 58 regular season games. He carries a hefty $5M price tag, but the Jackets with over $6M in cap space are one of the few teams who can afford to take him on. Kubina played a decent game tonight, with nearly 26 minutes TOI, with time on the PP and PK, recording 3 shots, 1 hit and 2 giveaways.

I’m just speculating here, but if I were one of the two Columbus scouts at the ACC tonight, I give Howson a call and ask him what he thinks about Ian White. White’s been quietly having an excellent season for the Toronto Maple Leafs, with 9 points in 26 games played and a team leading +7 rating. He’s averaged well over 20 minutes a night over his last 10 games played. Tonight, he was big-time stat stuffer on the gamesheet. Ian White led all Leafs with twenty six, yes TWENTY SIX minutes of ice time tonight. He had an assist, 3 shots, 1 takeaway, no giveaways, and 3 blocked shots. That’s one heckuva game. Another righthanded powerplay quarterback with a good point shot. Maybe that’s something to think about.

And if I’m Burke, I’m drooling at the prospect of a potential deal with Columbus. The GM’s got a bit of added pressure to make the playoffs, and he’s got a ton of attractive chips to play with. Team Canada junior defenseman Cody Goloubef, bluechip forward prospects Nikita Filatov and Jakub Voracek, goaltender Pascal Leclaire, hulking defenseman Marc Methot and of course draft picks just to name a few.

What are your thoughts? Let’s throw around a few trade proposals in anticpation of the trading season!

Always a pleasure,

Alex Tran

    Thought:

Howson calls and offers Jakub Voracek (The Hockey’s Future #6 best prospect in the NHL) for Pavel Kubina and Nik Antropov.

    Do you bite?

    Trade Proposals?!

How about: Voracek and a 2nd, for Antropov and Kubina and a 5th round pick.

The cost of getting an elite prospect out of CBJ.

The source looks very legit, because the Columbus Dispatch is reporting the same thing.

“– The Blue Jackets have two pro scouts in Toronto tonight. Let your imaginations run amok. I’m checking to see if one of them is GM Scott Howson. He did not travel with the club from Los Angeles to Denver this morning. I’m told he’s off to Ottawa to scout the World Junior Championships, but I’ll try to confirm later.”

    http://blog.dispatch.com/cbj/

Could you imagine the implications if it was Howson himself watching from the stands?

Negotiations for a deal involving Pascal Leclaire have been going on for a while now from what I’ve heard. Not sure what could be going the other way, but those scouts were probably taking a look at that or those individual (s).

That same rumour was passed my way alongside the tidbit that a deal involving at least one pick and a prospect may be in place for Vesa Toskala.

Interesting stuff, I didn’t think White looked good at all though Alex, he was in the box for two Sabres goals

Hey Alec, I just wanted to clarify………….does that mean that Toskala could be going the other way, and do you mean a pick and prospect would be coming to Toronto?

Its hard to trade both for 1 prospect and yes i know he is an elite one. I’m still more in favor of trading them to two different teams in the hopes to getting another two 1st round picks. Hopefully with those picks we can get 2 players that will come close to Voracek’s potential.

Maybe, but I don’t see Burke in a full draft pick stock-piling mode. I think Burke jumps at someone like Voracek rather than take a couple of firsts to get someone who COULD turn into a solid player. Voracek is SUCH a complete talent.

And yes, Voracek is a Burke style player.

Here’s what HF had to say about him:

“Voracek is an explosive skater, with dynamic offensive ability. He is extremely strong on the puck and has great vision. He has a very good shot, but prefers the role of a setting up his line mates. An outstanding puck distributor, Voracek sees the ice very well and passes the puck to an open man with an incredible speed and accuracy. Has a very strong defensive presence as well. Is very close to the full package, and has the work ethic and joy of the game to continue improving.”

    Plus he’s got size at 6’2 190.

This guy scored 101 points in 53 games last year in the QMJHL at the age of 18. Scary.

That would a nice 1st piece to a 1st line, he’s RW, if we grabbed Kane at this year’s draft we would just need a LW. Rick Nash perhaps? ;)

i love when players from other countries adopt the na style of play. voracek does look very enticing and i agree that stock Pilling draft picks may not be the best route especially when a player like this could be made availible. what would be the asking price for leclaire? it shouldnt be to hard to get him isnt he just sitting in the ahl because of mason? (another team canada wj gold winning goalie to play in the nhl ahead of pogge grr)

Columbus is gonna get burned by someone at the trade deadline this year and I’d be pretty happy if it were us. Filatov is doubtless untouchable but I’d be thrilled to pry Voracek or even Lecaire out of there. Remember when Columbus traded a first round pick for R.J. Umberger (Philadelphia’s third-line center) last summer and immediately declared him the solution to their problems? The Blue Jackets are just begging to be ripped off. Also if there’s a deal, any deal, on the table offering something for Toskala, for the love of god, Burkie, pull the trigger.

Columbus might be a little hesitant to trade that 1st rounder this year. Lots of talent this year not to mention that RJ trade might have left abit of a sour taste in there mouth. If we can trade Antro and a 3rd or later pick for Voracek then you do it. I’m still not sold on sending both antro and kubina to one team without a first rounder and a good prospect coming back. Unless there gonna trade Kaberle/toskala for a 1st round pick. we should have at least 2 1st rounders counting our own. i doubt we will be able to get 3 due to teams not liking one team getting that many picks in such a deep draft.

Along with what other posters have said about trading both Antro and Kubina for Voracek, is the cap issues with that trade. Columbus would be taking on $5.78M in salary. I realize they can afford that (barely), but I’m not so sure they will want to empty their wallets on that deal alone. Especially if there is another possible deal involving Toskala and Leclaire. Whatever ends up happening, I’m very confident that Burke will come out on top here. And if there is a way to pry the Jackets 1st from them, Burke will get it done….. I hope! :)

That would be great Alec!! Any word on who might be interested in Toskala?? Move him for picks and bring in Leclaire, not a bad move. Leclaire is younger and a little cheaper.

Maybe White was being showcased. 7mins more than his usual time?? That’s a little suspicious…

Hopefully this move with Columbus involves the Leafs getting one of Voracek, Filatov or a 1st!!

Should be interesting to keep an eye on this one!!
