Quick Post-Game: Ugh

Slow starts off the hop have been endemic for the Leafs this season, but tonight went above and beyond a poor start as the listlessness didn’t seem to wear off until the second intermission. A woeful first two periods killed the Leafs, but they can take some solace in a much-improved third period of play that made the score-line respectable. Additionally, Bryan McCabe played a role in both the Leafs’ goals and Jason Blake recorded the team’s first shortie in over a year. So it wasn’t all bad.

Lee Stempniak, Dominic Moore and Jason Blake were three of only four players in Blue and White providing a consistent effort tonight. The other was Luke Schenn, who didn’t appear to miss a beat in returning from a four week layoff (John Mitchell was pretty good too). With their top defensive performer back in the line-up, the Leafs will also benefit from the return of their most productive forward Thursday against the Canadiens. Stajan’s return can’t come soon enough for Nik Antropov, who’s gone cold in his last seven games with his link-up center out of the line-up.

There was just a total lack of jump out of the majority of the team for the first 40 minutes as they were outskated and beat to puck after puck. By the time the Leafs discovered a sense of urgency it was too little far too late. Oddly, I felt Vesa Toskala made a few saves he shouldn’t have while letting in a few he should’ve probably had. I guess it evens out.

Quicker starts have clearly been a point of emphasis for Ron Wilson since the Leafs have a resoundingly terrible plus/minus in the first 20 minutes. Perhaps Wilson needs to encourage his youngsters to play with a bit more reckless abandon off the start as opposed to trying to tentatively feel out the opponent (maybe he already is). This is a season more about experimenting and gaining experience than results. I understand you don’t want the Leafs getting blown out before a home crowd, but I find it hard to believe that starting off with a bit more of a bold approach would end up a whole lot worse.

I agree, he messed up a couple of times in mediocre seasons, but was complicit when it was his time to go and landed us mike van ryn, who has been quite good. he’s not deserving of a boo by any means. on the other hand, sundin…..

Agree Vesku!! I think that McCabe shouldn’t be booed. He was a solid contributor for a long time. He got booed as a Leaf when he deserved it, but now isn’t the time.

As for Sundin, I think he’s going to get a less than warm welcome when the Nucks come to town!!

Maybe if Leafs won tonight, many leafs fans would agree to boo him badly. Personally, Leafs fans lack class when they booed McCabe in the ice. We should appreciate what he brought to the table to the Leafs.

    LOL!

True Story: When I was loading up this page, I was thinking about what comment to add to the post-game section.

I concluded on a simple “Ugh.”, and then I see Alec’s title.

    Haha, talk about coincidences.

I was at the game tonight, it really annoyed me how the fans boooed McCabe so badly. On the scoreboard at one point a short clip of good moments for Bryan in a Leafs uniform and the finished by thanking him. I thought that was really classy of the organization.

What I often heard the past few years from fans is… “He doesn’t deserve that much money.” Let’s take a step back here for a moment, I don’t think anyone including Bryan McCabe honestly think he would’ve gotten such a contract. Everyone’s anger is towards the overpaid player that is expected to perform above his ability. That anger should be directed towards the gm and board that approved that ridiculous contract.

I put myself in McCabe’s shoes, if I were offered such a contract I would’ve signed it in a heartbeat. JFJ should’ve let him walk

Good to see Toskala turn in a second straight good performance; sure a couple of goals weren’t unstoppable, but the score would’ve been much worse without him.

Kaberle on the other hand couldn’t be softer out there. Convert him to a forward already. He clearly has no desire to be defensive.

I get the feeling this team will be better once there’s even more minutes and opportunities for players like Schenn and Finger.

Anyone who boos Sundin deserves a knock to the head.

I will be at the game, and I will drown out all the boo-birds myself.

Wow, what a brutal game, tough to watch. Kaberle was absolutely pathetic tonight, can’t wait to see this guy outta here. Makes me cry to think that we could have had Carter and a first for that bum. Also really hope we can make some good deadline deals to ship Poni and Antropov out of here. We really had no jump and the more I watch them, the more I hope BB starts to make some moves sooner then later. Lets forget about a hope in hell of playoffs and blow this sucker right up.

I just watched it on Sun Sports, for some reason except for the weekends the UK feeds are always Fox regionals. The one saving grace three hours of sleep the night before ment I missed almost all the second period. People who boo for McCabe should remeber how much the Leafs are paying for Finger. Funny thing, FS Panthers have a segment with a goalie coach and people have really pegged Toskala for over commiting too early both up high and being aggressive on his angles, he played OK but I still don’t think his starter quality, Vokoun however, out of favour in Florida… Thought Horton was a little poor in the game, but he did look like he was trying too hard, get the feeling he was trying to impress, maybe there is more than just rumours.

People who boo returning players are obviously Turdburgs. I for one am going to the Sundin game and if anyone boos him, I will rip farts all over there nacho plate when they aren’t looking.
