Quick Hits: NTCs, post-game reaction

Confusion across the Barilkosphere as to the respective no-trade clause situations of Pavel Kubina and Tomas Kaberle has been unending, mostly because, of the characteristics that describe the professional sports media in this city, informative or useful are not chief among them.

So I contacted Cliff Fletcher and Brian Burke. Wow, imagine that.

I’ve managed to confirm the following: Pavel Kubina and Tomas Kaberle both have windows of NTC exemption this summer, providing the Maple Leafs miss the playoffs. The windows open come the June Entry Draft and extend until August 15th. This may explain Burke’s intimation that he will not approach either Pavel Kubina or Tomas Kaberle about waiving, he may not ultimately have to. However, I speculate that Burke will still aware Tomas Kaberle or Pavel Kubina of an available deal should one arise as a way of simply “presenting an option.” Based on today’s report on TSN, it seems Kaberle wouldn’t stand in the way of a potential deal.

Tomas Kaberle can be traded as of the Entry Draft to any NHL club. Pavel Kubina has a list of pre-specified teams which unfortunately I couldn’t discover the identities of.

I also managed to confirm with Brian Burke that the Leafs’ conditional sixth rounder involved in yesterday’s trade will only change hands if he re-signs Brad May before or on July 1st.

***

Solid beatings at the hands of superiorly talented teams were to be expected this season. At least this time the Leafs didn’t slip silently into the night.

Brad May was incorrigible in a splendid debut performance… he was in the face of any Hab that looked at him wrong and owned Francois Boullion in a fight. Unfortunately it looked like May got the worst of it as he injured his hand because Bouillion had the gall to fight with his visor on. The revelation that May appears to be a free acquisition, coupled with tonight’s impressive preview, certainly has me sold on Burke’s lone deal thus far. His testiness was infectious and that’s a promising sign.

Grabovski may be facing further punishment for gently shoving the referee and kicking his stick into a crowd. I don’t know why the refs didn’t just let him and ‘Tits go at it so the pair could settle this zealous tiff once and for all.

Luke Schenn has returned with a vengeance. He was a physical force tonight.

But let’s not forget that for the most part the Leafs sucked.

Wow! Someone who actually does something useful and finds something out, nice job! This questions has been ongoing on weather Kabby’s window was this summer or in last year of his contract (2 years from now). Also with Kubina, the fact that it wasn’t a one time window last year.

    Well done.

Nice game down on the farm.

Tlusty scores, Stralman with an assist, Pogge stops 22 of 24 shots for a 3-2 win.

Look at the bigger picture Chemmy. You don’t think May had something to do with setting the tone tonight for the Leafs? So they lost, but in the process they showed more heart as a team than they have all season. Enjoyable for a change

I agree Taterchips!! Hopefully he can bring it again. Even Mayers won a fight!! As the game went on the Leafs stopped standing around and started pushing back!!!

Patience!! We aren’t going to be good tomorrow. MAy isn’t the future, but maybe he can bring some backbone to the rest of the team!!

I think it is fabulous to find out that the sixth pick is still within the leafs grasp. Dido was taken in the fifth round and he is looking pretty good. It was a tough loss tonight especially with every shot on net I cringed. Bring up Pogge and have some fun. The leafs wont the fights but lost the game ….. but in the Burkeian era it’s always better to go down swinging. Gotta love Grabbo;s exit peace yall!

You called him Tits! You are now my favourite blogger. I am not a ten year-old boy!

Ahem. Thought I’d link to this interview with Grabs and Tits (oh god!) after their last scuffle, posted and translated by someone on the hockeysfuture boards.

    http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=572169

Sounds like Grabs has a sense of humour but Tits seems kinda bitchy.

Also, didn’t it used to be a penalty if a player wearing a visor didn’t take off his helmet when dropping the gloves? I was expecting Bouillion to get two minutes for that.

The question that lingers in my mind after this game is whether seeing a Grabovski-Kostitsyn fight would have been a fight-fight or a slap-fight ala Semin. Either way, I REALLY wanted to see Grabs take a go at it and all those refs should be fired for getting in the way. If Burke didn’t already love Grabovski, he sure should now after such a character night! The bad blood this year between these two teams has certainly returned and I’d rather see the Leafs lose in this manner than lose like they did to the Panthers.

I beleive DiDO was taken in the 6th round. We also have a guy named Stalberg who was picked in the 6th that is currently a point-per-game player in NCAA.

Let the trade speculation begin, after Fletcher demonstrated with efficiency his desire to move bodies out of town. It is clear in mind that both Kaberle and Kubina know that their days in Toronto are numbered. I would bet that both will approach Burke before the trade deadline to get a feel for where they stand in the franchise’s future plans.

A bigger question for me and I’m sure many alike share this sentiment, what return could one expect for the trading of these two puck moving defencemen. Seems in today’s NHL, the demand for such talent is very high. Let Brian Campbell’s contract be the example. Highly overpaid, he’s often a defensive liability, but can rack up the points. Kind of reminds of a familiar face that made his return to Toronto on Tuesday.

I think the Leafs must trade Kubina, I believe he has great value. Kaberle on the other hand has so much value that I wouldn’t trade him unless I get the right return. Last year’s proposed trade was ideal, but with Carter’s break out season, I don’t see Philly flipping him let alone throwing in a 1st rounder. What I’m saying is that a trade for Kubina will bring back fair value, but unless an amazing offer comes along for Kaberle I just don’t see it worth it letting him go.

If the goal is to be competitive in 3 years, wouldn’t Kaberle be instrumental in providing some success for this franchise?

Seen on Howard Berger’s blog, he says that Kaberle admitted he will listen to trades now…. dunno if this is true or not, but I really doubt we will have to wait until summer to see Kabs get traded.

nice blog. very imformative. its great to see just leaf fans on this blog. real passion for our team. i agree that may will not be the savior to lead us to the promised land but this team needed an injection of balls and heart and may definitely brings that. hopefully we get another injection of heavyweight material to help may. it was nice to see jamal mayers fired up and kick ass. its been a while since he made an impact. as for grabovski, he has more emotion against the canadiens than any other team. it would be great to see him show that kind of zest in every game. gotta leave the officials alone though. that will only lead to problems. hopefully may can guide him in the right direction.

    Good work Alec.

Any idea what “as of the draft” means? If the Leafs were going to package Kaberle and their first to a team like Atlanta or NYI in order to move up to a higher spot, at what point could they make the deal without his consent?
