Circle Your Calendar, Stralman

March 5th will be a significant date for Anton Stralman.

Why?

He’s going to be re-inserted into the Leafs‘ lineup, and finally serve the role he was intended to grasp as an offensive defenseman in the NHL.

That is, if Burke can manage to dislodge Kaberle and/or Kubina from the lineup.

It’s currently unclear whether the duo of defensemen have a long-term future with the Leafs. While Burke claims he won’t ask either of the defensemen to waive their NTC’s, I have a feeling this story will pick up some heat as the days inch closer to the Trade Deadline – especially when considering Burke’s no-holds-barred attitude.

If either Kubina or Kaberle are subtracted from the lineup, do not expect an AHL defenseman like Jamie Sifers to fill the offensive void – especially if it’s Kaberle who’s booted out the door. Unless an offensive defenseman is headed to the Leafs on March 4th – which is a possibility considering the Jay-Bo rumours that have been swirling – Stralman will finally get his chance to perform as one of the go-to guys on the PP.

And it’s about friggin’ time!

No disrespect to Kaberle, who has been a force on the PP (fun fact: Kaberle rhymes with powerplay) during his tenure with the Buds, but it’s time to pass the torch. Stralman will have big shoes to fill, but it only makes sense to let him adapt with the rest of his teammates, who are each establishing their respective roles on creating a competitive Leafs team for the future.

Taking a glimpse at Stralman’s production at the NHL level leaves a little to be desired considering his success in the past – once being compared to Nik Lidstrom.

But let’s dwell a little deeper into the subject, shall we?

Here are Stralman’s point totals during the 07-08 season:

50 GP, 3 G, 9 PTS, 12:48 TOI

Now, let’s take a look at the 08-09 season:

21 GP, 1 G, 7 PTS, 15:51 TOI

An increase of just over three minutes of ice-time allowed Stralman to nearly match his point totals of last season in less than half the games. While his point production is low to begin with, it still serves as an indicator that Stralman is indeed coming along. Slowly… but surely.

If Stralman were to be appointed on the 1st PP unit, his development in the NHL would take a significant step forward. Since his arrival with the Buds, the Swedish-born defenseman has not been used effectively. I understand he has to earn his ice-time, but let’s keep in mind players like Matt Stajan, Alexei Ponikarovsky, Mikhail Grabovski, and others, were only given top-six ice-time because there was no other skilled players to fill in the positions. To quote Cliff Fletcher, ”Antropov is our only true top-six player.” Similar to his teammates, Stralman first needs the opportunity to strut his stuff in order to realize his untapped potential. Until then, he’ll be used as a fringe NHL defenseman.

In terms of his defensive game… well, there is none. Stralman is unreliable in his own end, and lacks any sort of physical game. But never say never. Stralman stands at 6 foot 1, 180 pounds. He’s not exactly menacing, but if he were to develop an aggressive edge to his game, he could serve as an effective two-way defenseman. That said, Stralman’s future with the Leafs is based largely from his offensive potential.

Until either Kaberle or Kubina are traded, however, Stralman’s contributions will be limited – don’t expect him to do much by replacing Sifers on the Leafs’ defense.

If Brian Burke can work his magic wand, March 4th should be highlighted by the additions of prospects and draft picks.

It’s important for the Leafs to realize, though, that they have a gem of a prospect who’s ready to contribute.

They just have to provide him the necessary tools.

***

On a side note: Does anyone else get the feeling that Stralman may be packaged to acquire a defenseman at Deadline? I base this off absolutely nothing, but I can just see Burke sacrificing Stralman to sweeten the pot on potential trades. Perhaps for… Jay Bouwmeester?

You stay classy, MLHS.

It makes no sense to package anything for Boumeester considering he is an UFA come July 1. That would be like hiring a lawyer and then just firing him right before you find out he would have gotten you a better settlement. You end up paying for it and losing at the same time. If the Leafs go after Boumeester, it will be in the summer. Let another team give up assets for him. If he wants to be in Toronto, he will be in Toronto.

you know Ron, it’s funny you talk about opportunity… I’m reading a book called the outliers, that examines why the greats in our society became great… and it really just boils down to that 1 word, opportunity.

you can have all the skill in the world, but if you don’t get the opportunity to succeed, you won’t… and in hockey, the concept of earning your minutes can only get you so far (fun fact, most top hockey players are born in the first few months of the year, because once puberty comes along, those extra few months put them ahead of later born players physically, so they wind up getting more time and better coaching)… look at a player like Stajan, he did NOT earn top minutes in any NHL team… they where handed to him due to a lack of depth, and now he’s looking like a bonafide top-6 player, whereas many Leaf fans where claiming he had peaked as a 3rd liner

I really hope Burke doesn’t trade away assets for Bouwmeester since he’s a UFA at the end of the season and can very well head for greener pastures ala Hossa.

Yea, I agree that Jay-Bo is a risky move. You never know though… considering the Leafs are short of star players, perhaps Burke would offer him a fairly hefty, long-term contract. Not saying I want the guy, but it’s a possibility.

I certainly wouldn’t complain if we acquired him, though, especially if it doesn’t include Stralman.

The Leafs have some interesting prospects and I’m not sure why we’re not seeing them play yet. What ever happened to Robbie Earl? Ben Ondrus anybody? Newbury? We’ve seen that Williams can stick. Kulemin and Tlusty should be up. Kronwall is still a Leaf isn’t he? Sifers isn’t bad. Stralman, as mentioned. How about prying Vorobiev out of the motherland? Pogge had one game and he’s supposedley the future in net. There’s a lot of potential down there in the ‘A’ – almost enough to ice half a team – that perhaps just needs their opportunity getting real minutes and real responsibility on the big club. I almost feel bad for those guys that cannot even crack a team that is supposed to be a bottom feeder. I’m all for using the minors as a training tool, but give those players an opportunity for a few games at a time so you can actually assess their value. I thought this season was going to be all about developing young players…

It’s odd that tonight is finally the night. He’s been listed on the NHL roster for over a little while now (I mentioned it in a blog over a week ago).

I wonder if, that week, there was talk of calling him up in case Schenn wasn’t ready to go, and as a result the roster got updated prematurely and nobody caught the mistake.

Either way, it’s good to see that Stralman is finally back with the big club. He needs another look, especially on the power play. If Burke is even going to consider moving Kaberle and/or Kubina, he needs to know if he has a special teams replacement for either, and Stralman’s skill set certainly fits the bill.

I should say, I am assuming that tonight is the night he gets a chance to play. He was only called up yesterday, but I imagine he should see some playing time as a #5 or #6 and on the second PP unit.

I second that. In fact, I think Stralman’s defensive deficiencies are somewhat overblown, perhaps due to the relentless Kaberle comparisons that have followed him since his debut last season.

True, he does have many weaknesses, as I alluded to in an earlier blog, but his defensive game has not really been all that bad this season.

In 21 games with the Leafs, he was a +1 on a team rife with minus players at the time he was sent down.

In 12 games with a Marlie squad not known for its defensive prowess, he also managed a +1 rating.

I recognize that +/- is a bit of a subjective stat, but his being on the + side of things cannot be overlooked, given the defensive woes of both the NHL and AHL teams he has been a part of this season. If anything, it is an indicator that this aspect of his game has improved from last season. Hopefully, he can continue to make those strides.

Regarding trading for Bouwmeester. If Burke were to be working out a deal for him, it would be quite easy for him to get permission to speak to him or his agent to commit to signing a new contract or a contract extension previous to acquiring him in a trade. This has been done before so the Leafs could in theory acquire him in a trade without worrying about losing him in the off season.

Gee, sounds like Pogge is starting to show that he deserves another call. Maybe he’s just getting tired of seeing other national jr. goalies (that came through after him)making a splash in The Show, and figures that it’s his turn.
I say Cujo takes off the pads and picks up a clipboard soon. Even if it is just until Toskala gets moved, Pogge should have gained plenty from the minors by now, and Cujo should step aside to let him show it.
As far as Stralman, he needs a real chance before he gets moved.

That’s good news about Pogge!!! I was looking at the AHL today and the Marlies are now in a playoff position (#5), after spending the entire year on the outside looking in. They were 6-2-1-1 in their last 10, which goes in line with Pogge’s 5-2 record since his return.

dont know if anyone has said this recently but couldnt pittsburg use a puck-moving defenceman? they dont have, have not had 1 all year and it would seemingly be something that would really help them. kaberle or kubina i think would fit for them. maybe both. and speaking of trades, wouldnt lecavalier fit well on the blue jackets? i think they have the cap room and a few players they could give up that would be potential stars in tb. i think the leafs are going to get dismantled between the deadline and the draft in june. it should be an interesting time starting around mid-february.

    go leafs go.

I didn’t read the other comments so I apologize if this has been covered.

If I’m not mistaken, JayBo is a UFA at the end of the season, so I don’t see the point in trading for him.
Burke could sign him during the off season.

I also think the only players that should be used in a trade are veterans, not prospects. I don’t want to see a repeat of Steve Sullivan, or Jason Smith. (among others)
