Tomas Kaberle Injured

According to TSN, Tomas Kaberle broke a bone in his hand during the 7-4 victory over the Colorado Avalanche and former teammate, Andrew Raycroft.

Kaberle could be sidelined for a minimum of 4 weeks.

My view:

While Ron Wilson may be pulling out the remainder of his hair, Brian Burke should be unscathed by the news. Let’s look at this optimistically: There are still four and a half weeks leading up to the Trade Deadline. Even if Kaberle doesn’t return after four weeks, he’ll be slated as day-to-day by then, so it’s not as if General Managers will be acquiring a severely wounded player. Hell, there’s even a chance he’ll be healthy by then.

In terms of his point production, it won’t make a difference. GM’s around the league are aware of the offensive elements Kaberle brings to the ice. He’s a proven, veteran offensive-defenseman who will be sought-after for his PP contributions. If this were Jason Blake, for example, then there would be reason for concern.

While his presence in the line-up will be missed, let’s look on the bright side: Is Stralman destined for more ice-time?

What do you think, folks? Does this affect his trade value? Was January 29 the last time we see Kaberle in the line-up?

You stay classy, MLHS

    Yep.

Wouldn’t make sense for a team to pay premium value for him if they don’t know just how healthy he is going down the stretch.

And Burke wouldn’t move him at a discounted price.

I see Kaberle being moved on draft day now, if at all.

I’d put money down that the Leafs go on a bit of a winning streak without him. His defensive positioning (especially on 2-on-1s if anyone watched the Sportsnet montage on Thursday) has been absolutely abhorrent. Most of the time it doesn’t even look like he cares anymore.

As you said Ron, I don’t think we need to worry about this preventing a potential trade come deadline day.

I have to agree with Alex on this one, it’s too close to the deadline for other GMs to pay the maximum return for Kaberle and it looks like he’ll probably be moved on draft day.

Nothing wrong with being moved on draft day, then we can trade him to ANY team!

And without him in the lineup, I think we’ll lose more games…. which is even better!

hopefully we can go on a big losing streak without him 1) We increase our chances in the Taveres sweepstakes and 2) It would probably increase Kabbys value if we can’t win without him.

I think his value at the deadline (with the deadline being an aggressive session of paying more than true value) if it’s reduced due to his injury, will be the same or more as his value after the draft. The only difference is he can go anywhere Burke wants in the summer. Teams will still want Kaberle for the playoffs and 9 times out of 10 broken hands heal just fine and don’t require major surgeries or have lingering effects such as concussions, so he’ll be ready to go right from his acquisition at the deadline. This may be advantageous because it prevents Kaberle’s continuous poor play from hurting his value.

    I agree with Alec.

His trade value shouldn’t be too hampered given that (a) it’s a hand injury, which is non-career-threatening, and (b) teams will want him for a playoff run more than anything, at which point he will be back to 100%. He’s been in the league for 10 years, so teams know exactly what they will be getting – no one has to prove his value to any of the league’s GMs.

Vision and skating ability mean nothing if the hands can’t execute, so if there is any setback during recovery, GM’s may fidget at the thought of acquiring him at the deadline, leaving him in play at the draft along with the points made in the above comments.

The plus is that is any team trading for him is looking beyond this season with his favorable contract so it really shouldn’t have that much of an effect on his overall value.

Considering he has 2 years left on his contract if he can show signs of healing, I don’t think it’ll hurt his trade value. One thing is for sure, Kubina’s value could rise cause of this. And the team as a result will likely lose more games without him.

I don’t think he broke his hand at all. I dont recall him taking at hit in the hand by a shot where after getting hit and jerk his hand like you do when it takes a bad hit. I saw a puck hit it but not that typical jerk reaction. Could it be fake or something?

Really a fake? Come on now, the guy gets paid over 4mil, he has to play. This scenario is as likely as Dougie coming out of retirement and leading this team deep in the playoffs.
Man I miss that team, can’t wait until the Leafs can create that kind of a buzz in the city again.

This is gonna be a great chance for stralman to prove himself to the organization that he belongs, and for Kaberle he can still be traded at the draft and his value shouldn’t diminish b/c of his proven production and he that he still has a couple years left on his contract. This could be one of those moments were the leafs make another stride to the future.
