The Kids Around Hall

The craft of writing fiction requires an author’s innate ability to capture – and maintain – the reader’s attention. It’s sleight of hand – or pen in this instance, with twists and turns deciphering an ending not envisioned by the reader. The process takes vision, vivid imagination, a well scripted story line and ‘sleight of pen’ to playfully mislead readers into a perceived outcome, while planting thoughts and doubts that in the end make for a fantastic story.

It happens in the hockey world, too, and might be happening to Leafs fans currently. It could be a main factor in drafting Victor Hedman over John Tavares in the 2009 draft.

Hedman or Tavares

The clamor and focus on the Tavares/Hedman debate remains a short term vision. Teams don’t operate in such isolated bubbles with static vision. Even coach Ron Wilson admitted last night prior to the Leafs/Sabres tilt that there is a plan in place and the Leafs are working through the details.

Many reports indicate most GM’s will look at their individual needs and decipher who goes first overall in 2009. I think this is just the politically correct public statement so that GM’s and henchmen don’t show their cards. It would be foolish to do so and not in the best interests of their respective clubs. But in private, there are distinct plans based on the final outcome of the season and draft order. Even if other assets have to be used to solidify a draft spot to turn the vision into reality.

For the Buds, in the background, it seems likely drafting Hedman over Tavares is a solid move considering the prize in the draft in 2010.

Not to take away from the possible contribution Tavares would have in blue and white, but I don’t believe he is the intended target in the 2009 draft in this portion of the Leafs rebuild; rather it’s another youngster with a late birthday and super skills.

Meet Taylor Hall, an electrifying, lanky pivot for the Windsor Spitfires in the Ontario Hockey League. Draft eligible in 2010 (born in 1991, but after the September 15 cutoff for eligibility.) Standing at six-feet, and 178 pounds, the center is patient, can stickhandle in tight areas with NHL ready skating skills and speed, and the ability to go coast-to-coast, making exciting plays whenever on the ice. His skills make him an instant candidate for being a 1st overall pick in 2010 and an even better candidate in the overall plan for the Buds.

Hall enters his draft year (next season) with three International Gold medals (Under-17 and two Under-18) representing Canada and will make a splash at the World Junior Championships next season when Canada goes for six consecutive Golds. The future NHL star is already garnering loads of attention (and praise from Don Cherry, both hailing from Kingston, Ontario), and the saturation will hit a fever pitch next season.

The Spitfires pivot is the exact #1 center prospect the Leafs need and it makes drafting Hedman over Tavares an easy decision. That’s not to say that having both Tavares and Hall in blue and white would be a bad decision, but Brian Burke teams are built from the net out (see Giguere). Solidify goaltending (still a work in progress) then the blueline and sprinkle talent up front in two scoring units.

If You Think they Stink in 2008-09 …

Watching the season currently unfold, the Buds are in the thick of a position for a lottery pick. Talk of playoffs having (finally) waned and reality has settled in quite nicely. The 5-0 loss to the Sabres is ugly, but should be embraced, taken as a good sign for the future. It’s a lottery pick and top spot in the draft; that’s the incentive this season.

If you think they stink now, imagine next season, after they have potentially jettisoned assets for picks and even less likely to win many games. Those losses become a win-win situation for both Leafs(tank) Nation, because Hall is just that solid a prospect.

The rebuild isn’t contingent on a solitary vision based on one draft. It’s a composite of prospects coming through the pipeline at the junior, college, and entry level, as well as proper assessments of the eligible and targeted unrestricted free agents to compliment a lineup.

Philadelphia, a coveted model for a quick turnaround for the Leafs rebuild, signed Daniel Briere when they had Mike Richards and Jeff Carter already in the wings. Surely they knew the potential of their youngsters coming up through their ranks, right? But they still signed Briere to a long term contract, front loaded it and are now shopping him to make cap space.

Not to take anything away from the Flyers who could be a distinct dark horse in the East come playoff time, but their vision was reactionary and requires more reaction to tweak. They need some solid help on the blueline and will have to trade an asset to get it.

So much for models.

The Boston Bruins are another intriguing model where a mix of youth and veteran signings have put together a contending team. Youthful David Krejci and Milan Lucic augment veteran talent. There are factors like Tim Thomas having a Vezina-like season, Zdeno Chara emerging as a legitimate Norris Trophy candidate and Marc Savard playing out of his mind on both ends of the puck – as clutch as they come – into a Hart Trophy season.

The sleight of hand may be necessary to keep the focus from fans on the short term. Long term vision doesn’t immediately sell tickets but does eventually set the club up to win Championships. It all starts with the raging debate over this draft crop and keeping a step ahead of the competition.

Just like J.K Rowling did in Harry Potter and Half-Blood Prince, (I won’t reveal the scenario as a spoiler), the sleight of pen in the Leafs instance is sure to create a magical ending without the need for a Hogwarts.

seen taylor hall play on a number of occasions, just an electrifying player that’s a surefire nhl superstar in my opinion. if we can get a top 5 pick this season (lots of options in the top 5 this year especially) then somehow get hall next draft we’d be in great shape

thanks for this post gus, another very well written and insightful piece

in terms of hedman over tavares in order to get hall… not sure if that will necessarily help. I agree with drafting hedman. I just think hedman would help us out next season more than tavares would… defensive problems are a huge issue right now, hedman would go a long way in fixing that area

    @ Chance

I think the only justification for that is that Stanley Cup teams needed (in the prelockout) to have two capable centers. Federov/Yzerman, Sakic/Forsberg, Modano/Niuewendyk, Arnott/Langenbrunner. But opinions spark debate that spark new ideas …

@Vesku I love Hedman. We don’t see enough of him here in North America but wow, this kid’s got skills …

I don’t think the Leafs will be able to choose which if any they get out of these twos. The highest i see the leafs drafting is 2nd overall and i see that team drafting first overall being NYI and i see them picking Tavares especially due to his star power and being able to put people in the seats. So I don’t see NYI passing him by for Hedman.

@ belak_attack I’ve not watched Brayden as much as my other McKeen’s cohorts and their description of his abilities are pretty impressive. He’s got a little Stevie Y in him. But if I had to choose other than Hed/Tav, it would be Matt Duchene… simply an awesome talent. It’s pretty even after that and dependant on preference for the GM.

    @Darkjester
Totally agree, dude .. that’s why I hope the Leafs get the 2nd overall pick :)

I think Kirill Kabanov is going to make a run for first overall next year. He’s a little over hyped at being the next Ovechkin but the kid desperately wants to play in the NHL and seems to share the same passion as AO.

My gut tells me the leafs should draft Hedman i just got that feeling he’s gonna be a star one day. If the leafs were to get first overall and draft hedman it would put too much pressure on him. Which i think would be bad for his development especially if he is drafted by Toronto. So the best case scenario is the 2nd overall pick cause then Toronto can do no wrong. If Hedman flops somehow they have the come on who else would we have picked at 2nd defense. So here’s hoping for 2nd overall.

P.S. imagine him and schenn lined up on that blueline

“P.S. imagine him and schenn lined up on that blueline”

my thoughts exactly jester. nobody, I repeat nobody, would want to line-up against the leafs with that pair on the ice for more than 25 minutes a night. gus I also think wilson will be begging burke to draft hedman so he can try to remedy the defensive woes of this club

If the leafs do get Hedman Burke might want something like he had with the ducks where Pronger and niedermayer didn’t play together which meant one of them were pretty much always on the ice the whole game.

@ Chance – a very interesting prospect indeed. Bulldog tactics with skills to match. Described eerily similar to Kovalchuk. Should be an interesting 2010 no doubt!

@Darkjester – not sure about putting too much pressure on the kid where he’s drafted. Being in blue/white would do that enough. The only thing Hedman truly misses is a legit mean streak ala Pronger. But if Burger King can make ‘angry onions’ the Leafs coaching staff should stick a bucket of them under him on the bench.

Really, WTF is an ‘angry onion’??

That would be a mighty fine PK. Maybe sign Beauchemin in the summer and that’s a pretty good improvement on the blue line. Then use our 2nd 1st round pick on a forward. Seems like a good way to start next year.

No matter what, the next two drafts should be good one for the Leafs. Picking in the top 5 usually means a true impact player. I’m happy that the Leafs got Schenn last year, cause this year’s draft looks thin on defence, (Hedman excluded). I think the Leafs need to snag the best player at their position. I would be happy with Tavares, Hedman, Duchene, Kane, MSP… in a Leafs uniform. Only time will tell what the future of this club will look like, but I’m sure the trade deadline will shed some light on that. If the Leafs are bad enough to get Taylor Hall in the ’10 draft, I’ll be very happy and this team could potentially do a quick turnaround, like the Flyers and Bruins.

Gus I know there will be lots of pressure on Hedman just cause he’s a leaf but could you imagine how much more pressure would be put on the kids shoulders if he was picked ahead of Tavares. The sun would have a daily column called Tavares vs. Hedman or something along those lines. I know he’s a big kid but i think he would even crumble under that pressure.

    I’d LOVE to get Hedman.

The guy’s having a monster season in the SEL, producing ridiculous offensive numbers. At age 17-18, he’s putting up points to Lidstrom’s age 20 campaign. And that was the year before Lidstrom came over and cobbled together a 60 point rookie season.

Not saying that’ll happen with Hedman, but it does give you an idea of how ridiculous those numbers are.

First, landing the number one pick in back to back years is not likely… so banking on it, I would not. Teams wont draft a player thinking they will get the top pick again next year… it just does not happen (actually, can anybody find a case in league history?). Hall will be a good pro and is definitly a top prospect, but this is why Tavares should and will be drafted over Hedman in the upcoming draft.

Tavares handles the pressure the best. Top players know how to do it, and people how have been put in that position for years learn it. John has already learned it having been called the next Wayne since he was 15. In all honesty, I think more presure has been put on Tavares than any other player coming out of the Canadian system… forget your Lindros, Crosby and so on. This kid has been hyped for sooo long and you can tell this season that he now has the confidence and skills to deliver. Plus, the guy that broke Wayne’s goal scoring record at a younger age, I want to see him in the Blue and White.

That’s not to take away anything from Hedman… he looks like he will be a great player… albeit he still is very soft, as the WJHC showed.

I wont disagree with how Burke builds his teams and the other analysis in the article… but back to back does not happen.

    @Bakedpot8o

thanx … I got hungry looking at your user name that I forgot what I was going to type … mmm, bacon bits … That’s it, no more food items in the user names! Alec, make it so ..

I don’t think Hedman is ‘soft’ he uses his body to take away space, but he is definately not a mean player for his size, which is a drawback. Checking doesn’t have to be a Scott Stevens type of hit all the time, it’s a mode of seperating an opposing player with puck. Sometimes I see a player and admire him for being physical but not necessarily mean. It shows up as soft, but isn’t necessarily the case. Jyrki Lumme was soft … Tomas Kaberle is soft … they offered different skills that made their ‘softness’ bearable. Watch Tlusty along the boards. He doesn’t seem a like very physical player, but in the one-on-one battles, watch how he uses his body to seperate the puck from the opponent, or limit any space to move. It’s not mean, but physical, no silly little stick checks like Van Ryn last night.

For the point on back-to-back first overall picks, anything can happen and you’re right that the likelihood of it happening is slim. If Toronto’s lineup is worse than it is this season (if they trade assets and don’t replace them through free agency) it’s not likely they better their position, is it? Worse roster, worse result? And if they don’t end up with a top-2 pick, no worries, I’m sure Hall is tantalizing enough to warrant icing the Marlies Dance Team for the 2009-10 season.

Being in Windsor I’ve seen Hall play quite a bit and he would be that face of the franchise, goal-scoring leader. How can one not salivate at the thought of lining him up next to Tavares???? There’s the Crosby-Malkin pair the Leafs, or any team, would dream of having. I really don’t think Hedman is going to be as good as he’s made out to be. Someone made a comparison to Pronger that is far off base and it has skewed everyone’s opinion of the kid. I think that Burke has to put a face on this franchise and it has to be a Canadian one for the sake of even better marketing. Schenn is a contender thus far – I know I want a Schenn jersey! But let’s see who else they can acquire in the next two years.

IMO, you don’t pass on someone because you think you might be able to get another rising star that plays the same position in the next draft. If the Leafs feel that Tavares is the better prospect, then they should pick him.

If they’re lucky enough to be in a position to draft Hall next year, that’s a win/win. They would have two future star centers they can build around for many years, or they could move one of them to fill other holes. You draft the BPA (in the team’s opinion) every time, and go from there.

I really doubt the Leafs are going to be in that top 2 spot. Look at Atlanta and New York Islanders, they have no chance to equate to the Leafs. Top 5 pick is the most visionary and logical. Hopefully we grab another first rounder and a 2nd rounder.
