Kronwall We Hardly Knew Ye

Staffan Kronwall has been claimed by the Washington Capitals off of re-entry waivers in what appears to be a stroke of respect and altruism by Brian Burke. With the re-entry waiver distinction, Kronwall was pretty much trapped in the minors. Burke’s hands were tied in terms of flipping Kronwall for assets as any team acquiring the rearguard would similarly have to pass him through re-entry waivers and would therefore risk sacrificing assets for a player that may be gone the next day (thanks to Spitfire for pointing this out).

Off goes a player that got a really raw deal in Toronto, partly because of untimely injuries during training camp and in large part due to his contract situation. It was always a mystery to me as to why the Leafs continued to turn to Andy Wozniewski last season instead of Kronwall, who to me was just way better in every aspect of his game. Kronwall was having a breakout season offensively this year as well, recording 25 points in 42 games thus far. Kronwall, a 9th rounder in 2002, appears another coup by the Leafs’ underappreciated scouting staff that’s gone all for naught, although we’ll have to see how his career transpires going forward. It would’ve been interesting to see if Kronwall could’ve provided the steady, defense-first, physical presence the Leafs could use right now. Nonetheless, a classy move from Burke and one that we can all understand, as tough as it is to lose a 6’4, 220 pound rearguard that appears to be breaking out of his offensive shell without any sort of return. Kronwall deserves a shot at an NHL career and it was obvious Toronto was not where he was going to receive one.

Circle March 5th on your calendar – Kronwall to score his first career NHL goal versus the Blue and White.

Perhaps the rule was put in place to stop teams from being allowed to send players back and forth at will, as they juggled their cap numbers. Unfortunately it does trap some players in the minors.
Was Kronwall signed beyond this year? In other words, could he have been brought up if he was kept until next year? Nevermind, he probably wouldn’t have been brought up then either though, so good move I guess.
Wait a minute, does this mean that Mark Bell could be unlaoded for the rest of the year if they called him up? They’d be stuck with 1/2 of his salary, but it beats paying the whole thing. Over 2 mil. to play in the minors still seems like a really stupid way to spend money unless there is a plan for him.

Let’s not assume Burke did anyone any favours until he actually says so, as he’s done in the past. It’s interesting to think though that this may be the start of a trade going down with the Capitals. They have quite the list of prospects to plunder.

If you guys want to speculate, speculate on who the Leafs are targeting on the Caps, and who the Caps would target on the Leafs.
Antropov would be a good fit on that team, as well as Kaberle.

    Gus;

His brother in Detroit (2 years his senior) was a late bloomer…. only coming into his own during the last half of last season.

I guess we will have to wait and see if his career follows the path of his older brother.

    Cheers

By the way, there really should be a provision that states when a player that has to clear re-entry waivers is traded that the waiver situation is forgone. It makes no sense. Throw that amendment in there with the limited soft cap system.

Makes me feel a bit better Gus, but I was always rather impressed with him when he did appear for the Leafs. Never had a lengthy stay so as to truly analyze the specs of his game but he was pretty solid back there.

@ Scott – yup, you’re right, he was a late bloomer, but he had skills and they kept him in the NHL because of that. If Staffan had the same skills, or similar, wouldn’t the Leafs had kept him instead of signing Frogren? Same difference, no?

I will give Kronwall one major compliment, he was an excellent interview, an excellent teammate and an excellent friend according to Marlies players.

@Alec, looks can be deceiving, but he looked OK at the NHL level, but never really did anything else to warrant a promotion at the AHL level.

But if you guys want to blame someone, this is Eric Prime from the FAN590′s fault. He loved Robbie Earl, gone, then Kronwall, gone.

He loves Schenn .. uh oh …

Alec… I agree with the liklihood of it, but before we go jump the shark and congratulate Burke on being a great person and start a petition for humanitarian of the year it should also be considered that their alluding to Kronwall being placed on waivers to get him in to the NHL with another team is just a means of saving face. If Burke outright states that this is what happened and why then I’ll take his word for it. I think Burke is a good manager but since his arrival it seems like he’s been getting the benefit of the doubt and touted as a genius with every move he makes. Remember how everyone praised the May acquisition? If it doesn’t cost the Leafs anything then ok, it’s worth a try, but maybe he shouldn’t be dressed every game when they can call some one else up for look instead because May has done little outside a couple of fights and an energetic first game or two.

    E-mailed Burke:

Me: “The Kronwall waiving… an act of respect for the player? The re-entry waiver distinction had him pretty much trapped in the AHL and no team would risk trading assets just to lose him through re-entry the next day. Was this the motivation behind the move?”

    Burke: “Yes, exactly.”

Trading Antropov and Ponikarovsky would damage Grabovski’s development since he has a language barrier. :D :D

    @ Gus

The one thing I am having a hard time reconciling.. If Kronwall was such a poor prospect, why was he picked up by a contending type team like Washington?

What do they see that other don’t?

Why wasn’t he picked up by a team like Ottawa?

I thought that when a player was on waivers…. either being sent down or on recall…. the teams at the bottom had a shot prior to the teams on the top.

Based on the current league standings that would mean 24 teams took a pass on Kronwall before the Caps (4th overall) picked him up.

I can understand some teams near the bottom (of both the standings and the cap) giving it a pass….. they don’t want a one way contract nor do they really want to get better (this year).

But I’m a little surprised that the likes of Tampa, Ottawa, St. Louis, Colorado, Pittsburgh and Montreal didn’t step up?

    Thoughts?

    Cheers

Caps had room on their roster and needed some depth on D. Other teams didn’t. It’s probably that simple.

Thanks for the explanation. So if the Leafs were to recall Mark Bell, he would go through re-entry waivers?

Ottawa and Pittsburgh probably don’t have room on their roster.

Ottawa has Phillips, Volchenkov, Kuba, Smith, Picard, Lee and Bell.. 7 NHL Dmen already on their roster. They have their fair share of defensive minded d and their top priority is a puck mover.. not Kronwall.

Pittsburgh has enough Dmen as well. They have Goligoski playing forward!

I think Spitfire was pretty dead on with it being as simple as that. Also, if the dman doesn’t work out, sending him down but paying him an NHL salary isn’t appealing, and that could be why other teams didn’t want to pick him up (TB), etc …

Also, other GM’s might be working on deals for the deadline and Kronwall would hurt the numbers.

Personally I don’t see what the big deal is here. I mean Kronwall was not gonna make the team otherwise he would of by now. And if he did, what would he be, a third pairing or reserve? That’s hardly something worth this much hoopla. Even though some may argue he is still young or just about to break out, one can also say he isn’t that young at 26 and he may never really break out and if he does he still wont make the second pairing.

Kronwall was dominating the AHL level.. His physical game was starting to blossom.. He could have been a solid piece. Much more experience than 29yo Frogren.

Not to mention he should’ve made the team years ago. He’s always been ready and mangement kept piling useless pylons on top of him. I would have taken him over Gill and I would’ve taken him over Finger and Frogren.

Not to turn this into a Cliff Fltcher rant but when you have a D core of

    Kaberle – Kubina
    Colaiacovo – Van Ryn/McCabe
    White – Schenn
    Kronwall – Stralman

Why the hell did he sign Finger and Frogren?

In support of what Spitfire said,

“The defenceman had seven goals and 26 points in 42 Marlies games and was, according to Wilson, the best defenceman toiling for the Marlies.”
