Question Period – Leafs Edition

Top of the evening, folks. Here’s some questions for you to ponder while you wonder how many three-goal leads the Leafs have squandered this season.

1) Grabovski is now on pace for 20 goals and 40 points – a significant drop-off compared to his contributions at the start of the season. Do you still see Grabovski as our #2 center for the future, or do his recent struggles warrant him a ticket out of Toronto (his contract is up this season)?

2) Tomas Kaberle appears to be slated for an early return to the line-up. Will March 4th be his last day as Maple Leaf?

3) Pavel Kubina continues to be on the rumour mill. Do you think it would be in the Leafs best interest to trade both veteran blueliners (Kubina and Kaberle), keep one, or keep both?

4) Jason Blake continues to be a regular on the score sheet. Will Burke opt to trade the 36 year old – assuming he generates interest – or will he keep him for another season?

5) Vesa Toskala, despite letting in 5 goals against the Panthers last night, has played two solid games after being called out by his GM and head coach. Will his play continue, thus raising his trade value considerably, or will Toskala fall back into mediocrity?

6) Similar to Toskala, Antropov has responded positively to the criticism laid out by management. According to Darren Dreger, Antropov was worth a late 1st round pick, or an early second for his play during the first half of the season. Do you think he can still garner a similar type of return, or would the Leafs be better off re-signing him?

7) The Leafs are currently in possession of a top5 pick. Do you think they will finish higher or lower than their current draft position?

8 ) We’ve seen Pogge in action for three games now. Do you think he should be inserted to the lineup as a backup (or starting) goaltender after the NHL Trade Deadline, or should the Leafs wait another season?

9) If you were Burke, who would you unload at the Trade Deadline? And what type of players would you try to acquire?

10) Considering the Leafs current state, how long before the Leafs become a Cup contending team?

You stay classy, MLHS.

    1) (Grabovski) He is still young and improving, I say keep him for our 2nd line.
    2) (Kaberle) Hopefully an offer good enough to entice Burke to trade him happens by the deadline.
    3) (Kubina) Once again, hopefully we get a good offer for him and he gets moved out.
    4) (Blake) I can’t see us getting a good enough offer to make it worth moving him.
    5) (Toskala) I think he could keep improving his play, and I don’t think we’ll get enough if we move him.
    6) (Antropov) Antropov needs to get us at least a late 1st, otherwise there’s no reason to trade him.
    7) I see the Leafs finishing with a pick anywhere from 3rd to 7th.
8 ) (Pogge) I think Pogge and Toskala should split starts next year.
    9) Kaberle, Antropov, Kubina, Poni for picks and prospects
    10) Hopefully Burke can pull off a miracle and we can push for the playoffs in 2 to 3 years.

    1. Sign grabs as cheap as you can on a one year deal.
Hopefully he gets better, then sign him long term next summer.
If he’s a flash in the pan then he’s done after next year.
    2. No, Mar 4, 2009 will not be Kaberle’s last day as a Leaf, Mar 4, 2010 will be his last day.
    3. Trade Kubina this year, and Kabs next year, see above*
    4. Bless Blake and send him on his way, hopefully to a deep playoff run with a cup contender.
    5. I think his play will continue, and he will go at the deadline.
    6. I say Antropov will stay on a tear, he will get a 1st (later one) and another later round pick.
    7. The leafs will finish in the bottom 5 for sure.
    8. Sure bring Pogge, who cares… he doesn’t seem to be on pace to be more than a backup goalie the last few years. And believe me it hurts me to say this.
    9. I would moved, Antro, Kubina, Poni, Blake, White, Mayers, Hollweg, Toskala. IF possible. I would be looking to bring in the bottom six forward type pugnastic players. But Frist and foremost I would be looking for the highest picks possible and picks to be included in any deal I make.
    10. In three years the Leafs will be a good team, but they will have to wait two more years after that to be cup contending.

thanks for your article, questions, and for any readers.

    1) Convert him to the wing or trade him. He’s not spectactular on draws and he’s not the most defensive minded (as a center should be); he’s also diminuitive in stature and seems to be a streaky player with perhaps and attitude problem. He’s not worth keeping if it means losing Moore or Stajan to make room for Mitchell or whomever else they bring aboard.

    2) If Kaberle is still a Leaf after TD day I will be mildly surprised, but that means he must be traded before free agency opens up.

    3) He’s a great leader off the ice but he’s expensive and not getting it done in his own end. Either trade him or reduce his minutes significantly.

    4) Trade him for what ever you can get. If he goes cold again everyone will fry Burke for not getting a return while he could and that salary could prevent signing major free agents down the road. Plus he’s a roster spot.

    5) Either way I’m doubting Burke will unload Toskala unless it’s part of a package. I’m sick of the groin and weak D excuses, as well as his “oh well” attitude.

    6) I think Antropov is worth more than that, but if he’s not traded it’s “mission failed” for Burke. If there was a player you could trade and sign, it’s probably Antropov.

    7) Lower. Ottawa has games in hand and once this club is cut to the bone after the deadline they will struggle for points. Or so I hope.

8 ) Let Toskala play out the season in reduced action with Pogge called up once a week. The more games the kid can play the better.

    9) This team NEEDS to become that pesky, rough Toronto team of the 90′s. If Burke fails to acquire players that fit that typical Western conference mould I will lose quite a bit of faith in this rebuild. This is his only real chance to re-tool via trade. The Leafs need some REAL character guys.

    10) 2 years before making a run at the playoffs. If they’re a Western conference built team admist a bunch of Eastern conference teams they may be able to go far.

    Great Questions…I love these things!
    1) Grabovski deserves some more time, he’s a keeper…for now
    2) If Burke can get close to what Philly offered for Kabby last year I say deal him, if not, keep him
    3) I say unload Kubina, his value is fairly high right now
    4) Unload Blake, his performance is better but that contract is a killer
    5) Play Toskala every game leading into March 4, if his play continues to get better then we can get more for him
    6) Antropov would excel on a team that wouldn’t need him to be a primary scorer, right now, he’s just not a good fit for my beloved Leafs…but I really do hate to see him go
    7) Honestly I think they will finsih right where they are….top 5 pick isn’t bad this year
    8) I say give Pogge a shot after the deadline….this will be his shot
    9) If I were Burke I would unload Antropov, Kaberle (if the price is right), Kubina, Finger, Toskala, Blake, Mayers, Hollweg and I would look for draft picks and prospects for most but for Kaberle I’d want an excellent prospect and a first roud pick
    10) With the cap space the Leafs will have over the next few years I see them competing next year and contending the year after….mark my words….it will happen

    1) Grabovski should be our #2 centre of the future. He can also play on the wing if two better centre’s come along. 20 goal season for a rookie is quite impressive. He has tremendous upside and will turn into a reliable top six forward, secondary scorer. We shouldn’t rely on him for primary scoring though.
    .
    2) I pray to god that yes it is. Get him out while team’s still consider him an elite defenceman. I don’t see it. He is way too soft and is good in the offensive zone only. Sure he can move the puck but his weak defensive play doesn’t make up for it. Let’s get a 1st rounder and blue-chip prospect for him.
    .
    3) Like Kaberle, he should be traded in order for the Leafs to stockpile high picks and good prospects. We need several more pieces in our rebuild and a return for both Kubina and Kaberle will definitely help this along.
    .
    4) I’m not convinced any team will take on his contract due to the three remaining seasons. The money isn’t the issue it’s the length. Leafs should retain him to provide offensive production while our prospects develop. The return won’t be worth it anyways. Plus if we trade Kaberle and Kubina, we need some salary to stay above the cap floor.
    .
    5) I doubt Vesa is going anywhere. And are we in any hurry to bring Pogge in to the NHL? Are we in any hurry to even win? No. Let him play out the rest of his contract.

    6) Antropov is worth a 1st, easily. Look at who else is available at the deadline? And how many Western team’s will be buying. Team’s will overpay for him big time. 25g potential, cheap contract, decent +/- throughout his career, chance to resign him… but most of all his SIZE. 6’6, team’s will drool over his size come the deadline. I predict a 1st rounder.

    7) I predict they will end with #5. They’re bad but not bad enough to finish any lower. They’ll draft Brayden Schenn… they have to!

8 ) He could pull a 40/40 game tandem with Toskala. Would be good for him and for Toskala (who has only played more than 40 games once, last year). It would keep Toskala sharp and injury free. Not 100% sold Pogge is ready next year though. May need one more.

    9) Kaberle, Kubina, Antropov, Ponikarovsky are must-go’s if I were Burke. Other guys like White, Stajan, Stempniak and maybe Moore could be thrown in to certain deals to sweeten the return. Although I’d like Moore to stick around. I’d pick up picks, at least one more 1st and 2 2nd rounders… and then some mid-level picks to fill the void we have in the middle of the draft. Also look for any blue-chip prospects if available (previous 1st/2nd rounders) and plumbers…. Hard nosed, big guys with a mean streak to play a Burke style of game.

    10) At least three years. By the time our picks in THIS years draft have properly developed, we should be ready to contend.

1 (Grabovski) Keep at the right price.
    2) (Kaberle) Trade picks and prospects for all
    3) (Kubina) Trade
    4) (Blake) Keep.
    5) (Toskala) Trade
    6) (Antropov) Trade
    7) I see the Leafs finishing with a lottery pick.
8 ) (Pogge) I think Pogge should get his shot
    9) Kaberle, Antropov, Kubina, Poni for picks and prospects
10)Playoffs 3 years max. Less with Nash UFA in 2010 or Jaybo next

    1) he’s just a rookie, he’ll get better. it would be nice if he would shoot more, as it is he just stickhandles into the zone and passes off. wouldn’t mind putting him on the wing instead of centre, but that would only work if the leafs actually had quality centres…

    2) if there’s a bidding war and burke gets a really good offer, then yes… but the leafs can afford to hold onto him, as well. draft day is a big day for making deals, either. even next year’s deadline is a possibility.

    3) it would probably be smart to keep one, because we still need some veteran presence on the blueline. i’d keep kubina because he’s at least more physical than kaberle, and trade him next year.

    4) i think the return at this point would be rather low. it’s probably best to keep him (and moore), hope he keeps playing the way he has been, and then by next year his contract will be cheaper and hopefully his value will be higher. plus if the leafs do trade antropov, ponikarovsky, and kaberle, then they’ll need blake to provide some offence.

    5) hopefully he’ll be more consistent. i still think he’s a good goalie, just having an off-year. with the defence in front of him, he’s not going to have outstanding numbers, but i think his own play will improve, but i think he should be traded next season, rather than this year. bring pogge up next year to back him up, which will give him more of an incentive to practice harder to keep the #1 job, then hopefully he can be traded at the deadline and pogge can take over for the rest of the season (if he’s ready…). if no trade is available, then he’s only on contract till the end of next season anyway so it won’t be too big of a deal.

    6) i don’t think the leafs will re-sign him, but i also don’t see him getting a 1st-rounder, and i didn’t think so even before burke’s comments. after burke’s comments, even a 2nd and a prospect probably won’t happen… so the best bet is to package him with ponikarovsky and try for the best deal possible.

    7) probably about the same. even if the leafs trade away all their top players, some of the teams below them will be doing the same, so there may not be much change in the standings.

8 ) after the deadline. cujo’s likely done, and there will be no harm in giving pogge more starts (unless he plays spectacular, takes over the #1 job, brings the leafs within a point or two of the playoffs, and then hell freezes over).

    9) kaberle, antropov, stempniak, mayers, ponikarovsky, maybe kubina. hopefully mostly prospects and picks in return, but of course we’ll need some players back to fill the holes in the roster… i’d love the leafs to get colby armstrong… otherwise, get players that will be UFA this year, or young players.

    10) 3-5 years. 1 more year like this year (or worse), then in the 2nd year they should start at least contending for the playoffs. in the 3rd year they should be a playoff team, but not necessarily a favourite.

    1. I’d sign Grabs for like 2 yrs at a decent price and see what he can do.

    2. I used 2 like Kaberle but he’s jus too passive now and could bring us sumthin good back in return, I’d like 4 him 2 be traded but only for the right deal.

    3. I’d trade Kubina too cuz he doesnt figure into the future plans and could bring back sumthin nice too… Only trade if its a good deal..

    4. Trade Blake if a good offer comes in but if nothin good comes in hold onto him til next year

    5. I’d hope ToskaLOL could keep up his good play and boost his tradeability but its styl up in the air n we’ll have to see what happens..

    6. Antropov could styl lobby a decent return and if Burkes smart he’ll re-sign him in the summer..

    7. The Leafs could draft from anywhere from 3-8th… I wish it could be lower but it jus wont happen wit da Islanders and Thrashers around..

    8. If ToskaLOL gets traded they should bring him up for the end of the season cuz we all know we cant put that on CuJo’s shoulders either lol but if Tosk stays around jus bring Pogge up periodically

    9. I would try and trade Antro, Poni, Blake, Kaberle, Kubina and ToskaLOL but in reality a max of like 4 of them will actually get moved if they’re lucky…

    10. I give it 4 years til the Leafs are respectable again…..

    1) resign for a year or two, evaluate at that point.

    2) agree with those who say, kubina this year, kabby next, he will only be 32 at that point

    3) no

    4) his play has been stellar as of late, get what you can

    5) old habits are hard to break…

    6) leafs will win big with this trade

    7) much much lower

    8) whats the worst that could happen? they lose?

    9) sell sell sell, everythings on sale, half off even! maybe a couple mid to late 20′s offensive minded second and third line wingers, young dman or two. maybe tuuka rask back from the bruins..(i wish).

    10) Considering the Leafs current state, how long before the Leafs become a Cup contending team? playoffs in 2, cup in 4 to 5

    1. Grabs is still young. I dont think hes untouchable but hes deff worth keeping around another year or two to see what happens because we didnt really give anything up to get him in the first place.

    2. I think we keep him because hes a decent price, good leader and excellent puckmoving defenceman and hes only 30. Keeping him makes us have to part with Kubina IMO though

3.Like I said, I think we trade Kubina to free up the 5 mil and I dont see him as part of our solution right now

4.I say keep him unless we get a really decentg deal. Hes starting to show he can put points up without having alot of talent around him. Last year was bad on and off ice but hes playing good now and worth the 4 mil. Could be a part of our rebuild because not EVERYONE can be young and remember he came into the league at like around 30 (not really sure) so his age of 36 does not exactly tell the full story. I say either moving him or keeping him can benefit us

5.When Toronto got Toskala he was thought to be the best goalie avalable at that time. I dont think you can judge him on this year because of being over worked and injured and the fact that the leafs are a$$ bag in team defence. I say you keep him but dont commit to him yet. He is a good goalie and I expect him to be a good part of the puzzel

6.Antropov has to be delt plain and simple. I think they will get a decent amount because theres not alot of good players out there for rental at 2 mil, let alone there are not alot of teams even saying they are sellers yet and its less then 3 weeks away

7.I see them finishing 28-27th. I dont think the Islanders will pass them or Atlanta. Tampa is deffinitally playing better hockey then Toronto as of late and we will se tonight. I also see the sens passing them with the two games they have in hand and they are starting to pick it up. Toronto will be unloading players here soon only hurting their chances every game to win. Then again I also wouldnt be surprised if Toskala and other played better and we ended up between 25-20

8.Pogge and Toskala have to 50/50 the starts next year. The way I see it is either they both dont impress and we look elsewhere, one impresses and we go with him for the rebuild but keep the other as a decent backup, or they both impress us and we keep them both. Look at where the 2 goalie system got Boston. Also we didn t give much up to get either (Pogge was drafted and the pick we traded for Toskala IMO would have been used to draft Cherepanov, who tragically died this year, not to make light of the situation by any means) so if doesnt make since to give up on either of them right away
    9. I say deal Kubina, Antropov, Pony and maybne Blake if theres a decent deal on the table. Other then that I say keep everyone for the rebuild. I dont understand why players like Finger(only d-man who will actually block a shot with his body) and Hagman(love the way he plays and he puts up pretty soild points) are put in disscussions.
    10. I say they will make the playoffs next year, and seriously contend in 2-3 years.

YOU DO NOT TRADE THE BEST PUCK MOVING D-MAN IN THE NHL WHEN HE MAKES $4.25 MILLION. KEEP HIM, IF ONLY TO TEACH AND MENTOR YOUNG JEDI WARRIOR LUKE SCHENN. FUCK. ENOUGH WITH THE TRADE KABERLE TALK.

Keep Blake, too. He’s ripping it. He’s worth the $4 million this season.

Grabs is young. We can’t write him off after one season. Give him another cheap contract after this season and we’ll go from there.

    1) Grabs – I like him, have liked him all season, but whether he’s going to be a solid second-liner remains to be seen. Try to sign him for 2 years cheap and give him one more year on trial. If not, trade him with a year left on his contract.

2)Kabby – right now, we need to try to get at least one more first rounder, and Kaberle is our best choice. He’s been defensively questionably the last couple of years at least, so this is the time to maximize your return for him.

    3) Kubina – trade him, again, assuming that someone is willing to shell out what we want for him.

    4) Blake – First of all, no one will pay for Blake so you might as well keep him – doubly so if his current form seems likely to continue into next year.

    5) Toskala – again, I don’t think there are going to be too many buyers – truthfully, the only teams that seem to be in serious needs of goaltending help would be Ottawa, Tampa Bay, and maybe Atlanta – none of whom would be likely to give up a first to get a goalie who has been, frankly, as bad as Toskala has been this year. That being said, if Toskala proves to be a better goalie in any of those three markets than he was in Toronto, then simply moving him there will increase our position in the draft, which has benefits all it’s own. Toskala to Ottawa for a veteran D-man (Jason Smith or Chris Phillips), and maybe a 2nd rounder may be the best option.

    6) Antro – easy: remember what Carolina did to us with Glen Wesley. Trade him at the deadline, let him know that you plan to re-sign him in the offseason anyway (given that he’s happy here), and take what useful pieces you can get from him – ideally a first or an early second and a prospect somewhere.

    7) We’ll probably move up – Ottawa should be better than they’ve been playing – especially if they solidify in goal, Tampa Bay could get better as well, and we’re definitely looking to get worse after the fact. Will we get Tavares – probably not, but Hedman is a definite possibility.

    8) Given that I’m calling to trade Toskala, it’s time to bring Pogge up. Curtis Joseph is definitely showing his age, but he could be a great mentor for Pogge, and he will definitely NOT be returning as a player next season. Might as well utilize his experience for something.

    9) Trade Kubina, Kaberle and Toskala as long as you can get a decent return for them, rent Antropov, and keep Poni – who is also finally living up to expectations as well. As well, do anything and everything possible to get rid of Jamal Mayers and Ryan Hollweg – possibly in a “trade cap space for draft picks” sort of deal. Maybe give Mark Bell another look on the fourth line – he can’t possibly be worse than Mayers.

    10) Playoffs in ’10, serious contenders probably in ’11. Whether we win the Cup or not remains to be seen.

    4)

1.) I like him, I think he makes a good second line center and he has youth on his side, not to mention he is a popular player in the dressing room and a positive influence (at least from what I have heard from his time with the Hamilton Bulldogs).
2.) Only if Burke can get something real good from him like a good draft pick, the more I read about Kaberle the more I get the feeling Burke wants Tomas to play like the puck moving defenseman he used to be as opposed to the train wreck he has been.
3.) Honestly I see very little reason to keep Kubina not while his trade value isn’t decimated like Kaberle’s.
4.) I’ve been saying all season Blake should be kept on, he’s the kind of veteran who brings kids through and after all the problems in the early season he has played his way into the team. Nobody will touch his contract either.
5.)Toskala has some fundamental flaws in his technique that always look set to explode into a deluge of goals but like others said what are you going to get for him?
6.) Contrary to popular belief Antropov seems to be attracting some interest could be the kind of player who goes out for a cup run then comes back.
7.) Probably finish around where they are, the Islanders are shooting for Tavares but you never know how the bingo balls will drop on draft day.
8.) pfff…. he hasn’t shown enough to be kept up better he try to prove himself in the AHL first.
9.) Draft picks I’d also like a high energy Jared Boll/Clutterbuck/Carcillo like character, a young depth netminder like Pavalec so Joseph can move out (because I don’t think Pogge will ever be a number 1) subsequently Hollweg could go no time for the guy whatsoever Toskala for sure better to fly with the aforementioned Pavalec or Pogge than his disaster Kubina and Ponikarovsky (Antropov for an end of season cup run).
    10.) 3 years
