John Mitchell capturing fastest skater honours was the revelation of today’s team skills competition. I could’ve predicted the team with Jason Blake and Dominic Moore would’ve won the event but I’m surprised Mitchell clocked in with the best individual time. Here’s the team press release containing the results:

The 17th annual McDonald’s Toronto Maple Leafs Skills Competition presented by Rogers took place at Air Canada Centre Sunday morning. In the seven skill-challenging events, Team Blue topped Team White by a score of 12-11.

Pavel Kubina of Team Blue took home two events, winning the Pizza Pizza Hardest Shot competition and the Rogers Shooting Accuracy contest. The following is a results summary of the 2009 McDonald’s Toronto Maple Leaf Skills Competition presented by Rogers.

EVENT 1: PIZZA PIZZA GIVE AND GO PUCK CONTROL RELAY

(Race 1: Won by Team White / Race 2 – One-on-One Challenge: Won by Team Blue)

In the overall relay competition, Team White consisting of Boyd Devereaux, Ian White and Jaime Sifers defeated Team Blue’s Jeff Finger, Jonas Frogren and John Mitchell. In the one-on-one challenge, Team Blue’s Lee Stempniak edged Team White’s Matt Stajan.

EVENT 2: MCDONALD’S FASTEST SKATER

(Team: Won by Team Blue / Individual: John Mitchell, Team Blue)

John Mitchell of Team Blue completed the fastest lap of the ice in just 13.848 seconds. Team Blue also took the overall event as Jason Blake, Dominic Moore and Mitchell registered the fastest average time of 14.03 seconds.

EVENT 3: PIZZA PIZZA HARDEST SHOT

(Team: Won by Team Blue / Individual: Pavel Kubina, Team Blue)

Pavel Kubina of Team Blue posted the individual hardest shot with a blast of 103.8 mph. His teammates Jeff Finger, Lee Stempniak and Brad May helped boost the team to victory in the event, with an average speed of 95.1 mph.

EVENT 4: JUDGED SHOOTOUT

(Won by Team Blue)

Jason Blake of Team Blue became the first-ever Judged Shootout Champion as voted by the celebrity judge panel.

EVENT 5: ROGERS SHOOTING ACCURACY

(Team: Won by Team Blue / Individual: Pavel Kubina, Team Blue)

Team Blue’s Pavel Kubina, Nik Antropov and Dominic Moore hit 11 targets on 20 shots to defeat Team White’s Matt Stajan, Luke Schenn, and Alexei Ponikarovsky who were 9-for-24. Kubina and Antropov each hit four targets on six attempts to record the best individual performances. In a bonus round to determine one individual winner, Kubina edged Antropov to take home the Shooting Accuracy title.

EVENT 6: ROGERS POWER PLAY CHALLENGE

(Won by Team White)

Team White won the 3 on 1 event, with the trios of Mikhail Grabovski, Nikolai Kulemin and Boyd Devereaux, and Matt Stajan, Alexei Ponikarovsky and Jamal Mayers scoring two goals each. Team White goaltender Curtis Joseph allowed just two goals against Team Blue in the event.

EVENT 7: MCDONALD’S SURVIVOR SHOOT-OUT

(Team: Won by Team White / Individual: Alexei Ponikarovsky, Team White)

Team White outscored Team Blue 3-2 overall in the event. Alexei Ponikarovsky was the only player to score in the sudden death round and was named the individual winner.

The overall event raised $85,000 in proceeds that will help benefit the Leafs Fund and the NHLPA Goals and Dreams Fund.

BUrke was saying that going forward he is building around Schenn, Grabovski and Mitchell in a interview I heard.

With increased ice time, Mitchell could be a great third line centre, second to grabovski and first ________.

I really think guys like Antropov, Poni, Stajan, Blake, Moore, Kubina, and Kaberle are going at the deadline or summer even if they go for less than what Burke wants….

No way in hell I would trade Stajan. If you ever watch him play he NEVER goes into a corner and comes out empty handed. Hes cheap and still puts up 15-20 goals a year. Grabovski should be canned because I honestly dont see him making a second line center. Mitchell should have that shot and Stajan should be 3rd. They need to go to UFA and pay big dallas $$$$ for someone if they dont land Tavares (which by the looks of it they wont)

Also, Kaberle needs to stay unless we get an insane offer because no team ever goes anywhere without a puck moving defenceman….everyone else on that list needs the boot though

ponikarovsky is 1/12 in the shootout in game situations… yet he wins the shootout competition going 2/2?

anyway, video of each of the events can be seen on the leafs’ website.

Don’t worry about the centre depth … a good team is at least 4 to 5 deep at any forward position. That’s what creates competition. Not to mention the whole injury bug issue. Or line-juggling. It’s not like guys stay on the same line, in the same pecking order, for the entire season. This whole notion that the #2 guy has to be Stajan *OR* Grabovski is ridiculous.

(Jon, I’m not directing this at you. Your post made me think of the “one or the other” argument I’ve heard many make in reference to Stajan/Grabovski.)

Ice time isn’t standard … that is, nothing says that the guys on the 2 and 3 line won’t get similar minutes. On a lot of teams, the 1 and 2 lines have similar minutes. Check out ice time stats on NHL.com sometime, and you’ll see that after the top forward on the team, the next 5 forwards all have similar minutes per game.

There is nothing wrong with a centre lineup of [unnamed #1], Grabovski, Stajan, and Mitchell as your regular four pivots. None are entitled to their minutes, and will have to earn them every game. Chances are that if Stajan and Grabovski are the #2 and #3 guys next season, their average ice time per game, after 82 games, will be within a minute of each other, max.

This may be of interest only to the stat geek that is me, but there are two league trends I’ve noticed when reading ice time statistics.

    Trend A
Line 1 gets the most minutes, Lines 2 and 3 have similar minutes, and Line 4 has the least.

    Trend B
Lines 1 and 2 have similar minutes, Line 3 has fewer minutes, and Line 4 has the least.

Which all goes to say that having depth at the forward position, three lines deep, is no cause for concern at all. One needs look no further than the Penguins re-signing Staal to see this logic in play.

(This is the last one – was supposed to part of the last comment – oh well.)

*sigh* When I start seeing “no way in hell do I trade Stajan”, it gets me thinking.
No way in hell do I trade Kaberle, he’s waaay underpaid for his point production and a pretty fine PP QB.
No way in hell do I trade Kubina, he’s got that Stanley Cup ring and a blast from the point.
No way do I trade Moore, the prototypical third line center, great on faceoffs and bringing linemates back from the dead.
No way do I trade White. Or Grabovski. Or Kulemin. Or (obviously) Schenn.
No way do I trade Antropov. Big guy, second in goals scored on the team, plus he loves it here.
    Need I go on?
Who’s left to trade? Toskala? Hollweg? Betcha we can get a FINE bucket o’ pucks for the two of ‘em.

    @ Ken Breadner,
The reasons you say Kaberle shouldn’t be traded are the exact reasons why he should be traded. He will bring the most in return to the Leafs in a trade. That will help with the re-build. The fact that he’s underpaid right now means nothing to the Leafs. They have plenty of cap space and aren’t contending. By the time the Leafs are ready to be contenders, Kaberle will be 33 or 34 at least and on a new contract (likely not underpaid anymore). What would you rather have when the leafs are starting to contend, a 34 year old defenseman who is a liability in his own zone that is no longer underpaid, or a 22 year old player who is still on/just coming off entry level contract and is rounding into form??

In case anyone is interested, LeafsTV has the skills competition listed on the schedule today @ 6:00.

I was at the skills competition in 2006 and it was a lot of fun!! I’d go again if I had the chance. Tickets aren’t that expensive, I think this years were about $15 (I paid $11.50/each +service charges, tax, ect). Just haven’t had the time to go again. I think it’s a great way to go see the Leafs, especially if you can’t afford $90 for the cheapest seat.

    KEN

I see what your saying but I dont think we would get anythting to what Stajan is worth thats why I say keep him. Most others have to go but Stajan doesnt get enough praise IMO for what he does….hes been there and done that for the leafs, plays consistant, cheap, and wants to play here. I still say keep him, plus hes still like mid 20′s age

Burn, I was being a tad sarcastic–this is a mediocre at best lineup and if we’re to change that then most of it has to go. Jordan, I think the person you’re describing is Domenic Moore, myself.
It’s a bit of a conundrum in that any reason you can manufacture to keep somebody only adds to their trade value.

Just finished watching the Skills competition on LeafsTV. LMAO @ Stajan who fell during the puck control relay!! It was a total “Yard sale” LOL!!! Also at Stempniak who missed the net badly during the hardest shot. Paul Hendrick said “Leave it to a guy from Buffalo to go wide right!” LOL!!!

Pony looked completely shocked at the fact that he won the survivor shootout.
