Who’s On Burke’s Radar?

While draft picks are high priority in any potential trade talks leading up to the March 4th deadline, Brian Burke is also said to be targeting a group of young but already established NHLers, according to a source.

Alex Goligoski, a smooth puck-moving defenseman with the Pittsburgh Penguins, has been mentioned as a target of Burke’s in recent trade negotiations concerning Nikolai Antropov. Rumour has it that Burke’s demanded a first round pick along GoGo but it seems that Burke will have to lessen his demand (likely to a lower round pick) in order to progress. In addition to Goligoski, Burke is said to be willing to include any of his major assets currently at play (Tomas Kaberle, Pavel Kubina and Nik Antropov at this point) in a potential deal for the following young talent:

Blake Wheeler – It’s not hard to interpret the reason for Burke’s interest in the former fifth overall pick. He’s a colossal specimen at 6’5, 205 pounds and, in keeping with his name, is a powerful skater to boot. His power forward qualities could contribute significantly to the belligerent mold Burke intends on implementing with his roster going forward. The Leafs are short on top 6 talent in all areas but are particularly desperate on the right wing as Lee Stempniak continues to dissapoint. Wheeler possesses the high-end scoring ability that would immediately qualify him as the Leafs’ top up-and-coming offensive talent, as would any of the players listed here and below. According to this source, the Boston Bruins are one of the teams named on Tomas Kaberle’s trade destination list. Wheeler’s scoring production in his rookie campaign has been impressive at 17 goals in 58 games played and the best is yet to come from a player equipped with all the right tools to become a dominant winger capable of striking fear in opposing defenses. By no means would Wheeler come cheaply.

Jakub Voracek – Another top ten draftee, Voracek has the size and explosive speed of Wheeler but perhaps greater offensive upside. Voracek has both visionary play-making ability and a wicked shot but is more of a pass-first winger. It would be a case of the allegedly xenophobic Burke acquiring a European player, but Voracek defies all stereotypes concerning cross-the-pond skaters as he possesses an accomplished defensive game and a driven work ethic. He is indeed a Burke, if European, player. His rookie campaign as a 19-year-old has been pretty strong (28 points in 55 GP, +13) considering his limited time on ice (typically in the 11-12 minute range). Rumours of Nik Antropov to Columbus have been circulating for some time now, and it’s been said that general manager Scott Howson would love to center Rick Nash with Antropov for a playoff run. The Blue Jackets have also been in the market for a power-play quarterback and the first name that comes to mind there is Tomas Kaberle. The Blue Jackets currently sit sixth in the West but are by no means a lock for the playoffs in a tight Western circuit. It would take a commitment to the present that has yet to be seen in the history of the Blue Jackets organization. This may finally be the year. It would take more than Nik Antropov, however.

Drew Stafford – Also a player that owns an impressive size/skill package, Stafford’s a capable grinder with a refined skill set. A hard-working three-zone player with leadership qualities that no doubt attract Wilson and Burke. The right-winger’s taking on a more prominent role on an 8th placed Buffalo Sabres team and is unlikely to be headed anywhere soon as the Sabres gear up for the stretch drive. The Buffalo Sabres are another team said to be on Tomas Kaberle’s trade list as a playoff competitor that’s close to home.

Travis Zajac – The jury was still out on Zajac’s potential to become a number one centre but he’s encouraged the New Jersey Devils’ management team with a break out season so far in ’08/’09 (48 points in 58 games). Zajac owns an excellent frame and has found a place in the Devils’ system due to his defensive awareness. He currently sits at +28, leaving him in the top ten league-wide in the +/- category alongside the above mentioned Blake Wheeler. He’s additionally a natural offensive talent. It’s always risky acquiring players that have been developed in the very scrupulous system of the New Jersey Devils, but Zajac seems ideal for the Burke and Wilson mold. Again… he wouldn’t come easy.

Your thoughts?

Here’s some awesome news: Jiri Tlusty set a Marlies franchise record with five goals in an 8-5 win over the Syracuse Crunch tonight. Tlusty has caught fire as of late and now sits with 41 points in 43 games played on the season.

    oops Blair and I have very similar posts, sorry I missed yours buddy. Great minds think alike. Antropov and Kubina > Voracek and a 1st – I’d be SO happy. And it seems like it would work well for both teams, I really can see this one going down (or something very similar)

    Agree with Leafslunch and Barry. Kabina and Andropov to Columbus for Voracek and a first is the best you can hope for. Plus, if Columbus wants to dump a big contract for the rest of the season in UFA Michael Peca that would be okay.

    @Mike I love the idea of alzner but i think your including to much for him, kabs will recieve a 1st and top prospect, but the fact that washington has greene kind of makes that trade a waste for them. so maybe that was your thought? i was hoping for wheeler the past off season to no avail, i think some of these players would look great in t.o but hopefully not for to much! trading picks is alright if it makes sence and i dont think bb is that stupid he would just try to get a higher return which might make sense in our posish

    VanRiemsdyk is certainly a player that makes a lot of sense and would have been on my list if I was simply speculating… according to a source these are the players Burke has been inquiring about… not all are possible by any means, but he really likes the above young talent.

    Always a good read, however in reality, which GM would not have these players on their radar? You might as well add Crosby to this list then. :)

    Let’s hope Kubina and Antropov have the games of their lives tonight, perhaps that will help…

    I for one wouldn’t give you a bag of pucks for Cindy.

    His leadership is toxic. Unfortunately, nobody sat him down in his early life and taught him any form of humility – and you can’t lead if you’re a prima donna.

    Guy Lafleur was an excellent example of how a junior scoring sensation should be handled. Spend some time in your rookie and sophmore season on a checking line. Watch the leaders on the Power play and Penalty kill, and learn.
    Be grateful for the few opportunities you’re given to shine, and give credit to your teammates for your successes. Blame your own inexperience for screw-ups that happen when you’re on the ice. In other words: man-up before you try to assume a leadership role.

    I’m afraid the damage is irreversible now.

    After watching the game against Buffalo the other night, I was ready to see BB trade everyone!!

    I’m not so sure we’ll see a huge splash at the deadline. I think we might see two or three deals, but maybe not all of the guys we’re hoping will have a new home come the 09-10 season.

    I think Moore will go if BB doesn’t re-sign him prior to Mar. 4 along with Antropov and either Kubina or Kaberle. There’s also an outside chance Blake may go somewhere if he keeps the hot hand and some team desperate to make the play-offs, or make a run at the cup thinks he will push them over the edge. The problem is his contract moving forward, so the team would need to be one that has some wiggle room under the cap.

    I think if Kaberle moves it’s because someone knocked BB off his feet with what they were offereing. Van Ryn could have gone is he wasn’t injured. Most of our desired moves might actually take place at the draft instead of on or before Mar. 4. Regardless, it will be fun to see what happens. I hope Pogge stands on his head tonight…we need some sign of hope between the pipes for the future!!

    I would love to see either Wheeler or Voracek as a part of this team moving forward. The cost may be a bit steep, but both of these guys are young forwards whom the team can build around. Getting a forward who is in his early 20s is every bit as good as getting a draft pick.
    .
    Just for kicks, how about …
    .
    Kaberle + Moore to Boston for Wheeler + 1st + Ward?
    .
    Boston’s 1st is anticipated to be near the end of the round, but at least it is another draft pick. The Bruins could use a versatile player like Moore on their checking and PK units, but would have to unload some salary for the deal to fit under the cap (adding Aaron Ward evens out the salaries). As hard as it would be to see Moore go, he could be re-signed in the offseason.
    .
    Antropov + Ponikarovski + conditional pick to Columbus for Voracek?
    .
    Hitchcock loves big players. Alec is right that Antropov alone won’t net Voracek, especially since he is UFA at the end of the year. Poni gives Columbus another big man along the boards, and is signed affordably through next season. The pick would be conditional based upon whether or not the Jackets can re-sign Antropov.

    If you could steal Hodgson from Vancouver and re unite Antropov with with Sundin. Then draft Duchene at the draft and you have created a combination of players similar to Perry and Getzlaf.

    The idea when rebuilding is to think of it like a chess game. You can not just play move to move you have to think about the chain of decisions that will hopefully result in success.

    A note about Blake Wheeler, I like him as a hockey player but I think he is over producing on a offensively stacked Bruins squad and I do not like how he dealt with the Phoneix organization.

    I wouldn’t want Crosby either… but if I had to have him, I’d trade him and half my team for Ovechkin =)

    I’m beginning to think neither Kaberle or Kubina get moved at the deadline. I know it might just be showmanship when Burke praises Kaberle and says how he wants to keep him – doing so drives up the price to pry him away – but part of me can’t help but believe Burke. And apparently Kubina has not presented his list of acceptable teams to be traded to and my thinking is he won’t do so because he’d rather use the remaining two months to get back in the team’s good books and hope he doesn’t get traded at all again this summer. Trading those two is the key to this rebuild being efficient.

    @Carlton
    I thought of that too, but Columbus doesn’t have a whole lot of cap room left this season (just under 53 million this season). Salary would have to come back in the event of an Antro + Kubina situation. That and Kubina would have to be willing to go to Columbus. Which is why I opted for the conditional pick scenario. Not that it is likely to happen, but speculation is fun in any event.

    @Blair
    Kaberle may be easier to move, if for no other reason than his skill set and contract make him a rare commodity … and he has suggested he will consider waiving the NTC. It’s hard to judge Kubina’s value on the trade market (does manyf things well but nothing exceptional), and he is expensive at $5 million, which will turn some potential suitors away. Especially considering that his level of play has not come close to justifying the size of his contract in his two seasons with Toronto. But all of that is moot until he agrees to waive, or at least agree to consider some teams (Burke’s infamous list of ten).

    @Jon
    I like that deal, but I would suspect there would have to be something more going from Toronto to Nashville, given the ages of the players involved and Koistenen’s considerable upside. Jackets blogger Eric Smith has been suggesting Antropov for Klesla for a little while now … not sure that I like that deal so much, given Klesla’s injury history.

    Bottom line is i cant wait for March 4th but I hope leafs fans are real patient, draft picks are nice, but we have to be patient with our 2nd n 3rd overall picks!
