Are Talks Heating Up?

The reputable Eklund is reporting with an always reliable “e4″ rating that the Maple Leafs are closing in on a deal with the Vancouver Canucks that will involve Nikolai Antropov heading west in exchange for a first round pick and a prospect. To no one’s surprise, Brian Burke and Mike Gillis have been carrying out negotiations for some time now, primarily on the subjects of Antropov and Tomas Kaberle. A deal is not as imminent as Eklund’s reporting, but there appears to be deal potential in Vancouver and potentially of the blockbuster variety.

Burke does appear to finally be nearing his first deal of import as Leaf general manager, or rather, teams are starting to inch closer to meet Burke’s demands. The reason why activity has been as slow-going as it has been is due to the fact that, in addition to the current economic climate that’s affecting teams’ ability to swap salaries for picks, Burke’s trying to hit the jackpot in any and all negotiations. His first few months in the Leaf front office have been spent gaining the upper hand in these negotiations by establishing lofty list prices on his assets and then showing an unwillingness to budge an inch on those demands. This type of attitude and approach likely surprises few that know how Burke operates. In large part it has to due with the fact that, while Leaf brass has preached patience as a virtue in the inevitably tough stretch ahead, Burke doesn’t expect to be non-competitive as long as one might imagine when thinking of the conventional time-line on a full-scale re-build. He is simply too competitive of an individual. Burke does have a few pieces in his arsenal that can, in his view, totally reverse the current trajectory of the franchise if he can reify his demands on his trade-available assets.

The draft isn’t and shouldn’t be viewed as the only modus operandi for the Maple Leafs’ re-build, either. As mentioned in a prior blog, Burke has been kicking the tires on some young but already established NHLers and, according to a source, plans on exploring the free agency market with vigor.

As much as Burke continues to be steadfast in his demands, one would think he’ll make concession at some point, at least to some extent. Burke doesn’t appear to have interest in re-signing Antropov, so he’ll have to be moved for the best available offer come March 4th. Tomas Kaberle, on the other hand, may be held onto unless an irresistible offer comes Burke’s way as he will have a wider market to deal with in the summer during Kaberle’s Entry Draft – August 15th trade window.  Burke will not relent in his expected return for Kaberle, and hopefully it’s a tactic that winds up paying dividends.

The Philadelphia Flyers and the above mentioned Vancouver Canucks are both said to be preparing package offers, while the Penguins and Devils may also follow suit. Don’t count out the Boston Bruins on the Tomas Kaberle front, the question being: would Peter Chiarelli part with Blake Wheeler?

In terms of the latest Canuck rumours, it’s said that Burke’s working on getting one of Ryan Kessler or Alexander Edler involved in a package with Cody Hodgson seemingly off limits. There is a combined worry of losing the Sedin twins to unrestricted free agency and the feeling that after Hodgson (who they rightfully think is absolute steal at 10th overall), the organizational depth runs thin.

This next paragraph is mostly speculative based on me piecing together various different factors at play. Several teams, particularly out West (which may not help Burke arrive at his asking price for Kaberle as his trade list is East-heavy) really feel they have a shot at making a run if a few pieces can be obtained to give them the edge on the competition in a very tight Western circuit. Burke may potentially be the beneficiary of the fact that there isn’t a ton to choose from in terms of forwards on the open market. The return on Antropov can be hard to predict… he of course has impending UFA status and a worrisome history of knee complications, but he’s also a 6’6, 25-30 goal forward with great hands, capable of playing the wing or at center ice, and wouldn’t force a team to sustain much of a cap hit at all for the remainder of the year. Factor in the possibility of the ‘Nucks nabbing Kaberle at a modest salary as well… you can see the blockbuster potential between the two clubs. There’s the problem that Vancouver’s not on Kaberle’s trade list, but the prospect of staying in Canada and playing with Mats out west on a playoff run may sway Kaberle’s decision.

Meanwhile, Pavel Kubina doesn’t appear to be heading anywhere in wake of Howard Berger’s latest report that he’s not interested in waiving his NTC. The Leafs will have a window from the June Entry Draft through to August 15th in which they can move Kubina without the player’s approval.

Should be an interesting upcoming week monitoring the above situations. But one can’t help but wonder if, for the second consecutive season, the highly anticipated firesale will wind up being a wet firecracker.

IMO, Burke is going to trade Kaberle for a 1st, a solid prospect, and a young proven player. I mean, why do some of you want to roll the dice so badly? There are people here that would be fine with a 1st and a prospect or two. Nothing of any PROVEN worth! Casino’s must love you guys. :)

For one of the best puck moving defencemen in the league, don’t you want anything in the return, that would be considered a guaranteed commodity of such? Besides, if all we’re taking in trade for Kabby, are non roster players and a 1st, how is Boston going to fit Kaberle under the cap?

Yeah, Kubina’s not going anywhere and it appears from Berger’s blog that Burke’s preparing us for the possibility of Kaberle staying put until the summer as well… that could be an attempt to further drive up value or more likely Burke, unless a big offer comes his way, will wait until the summer when he has a wider market. It looks most likely that only Antropov of the “major” three assets will be leaving by March 4th.

Hey Alec are you serious about “the always reliable e4 rating” or is that sarcasm. I am assuming sarcasm…

I’m a little disappointed in Kubina. If his line of thinking is “Burke hasn’t requested I waive my no trade clause, so that must mean he wants to keep me and that means I want to stay” when Burke is only not requesting Kubina waive his no trade clause out of respect and not out of desire to keep Kubina because he’s a piece of the future, then Kubina’s stupid decisions aren’t limited to the ice. It’s nice to see the GM showing respect for the players, but it’d be nice to see the players show some respect for the franchise and the fans that know the way to win is by trading these players and putting together the puzzle that they are not part of. Kaberle, Kubina, McCabe, and Sundin had their chance. If they really loved Toronto, the team, and the fans, they would accept the fact they have to move on rather than glutch on to that glimmer of hope like a forward beating Kubina to the net.

In addition, don’t rule out the possibility, that Columbus will be Burke’s trading partner. They will be interested in Antropov and Kubina.

I am not on board. Antropov will be moved. But I feel a couple minor moves will happen as well . May be a part of a Antropov deal or seperate. I’m thinking Stajan or Mayers. Players in that sort of role. Stajan/Moore ( although I agree with Alec on Moore) would make for cheap fill in’s at centre . Teams are taking note of the face off wins by Moore. Also in the mix is a outside chance of White moving though I think Ron loves this kid and the return would not be worth the minutes he gives his club. IMO White is too small a D-man for Burke.

@ Josh – Major tongue in Cheek!

Another factor at play I meant to mention in the blog… if Florida holds onto Jay Bouwmeester, one would think Tomas Kaberle’s trade value gets that much better. If J-Bo stays put, surely you move Kaberle at the deadline?

Hmm, is it at all possible that Burke could send Antropov to Chicagoe for Khabibulin and a pick or 2? Would free the Hawks up for salary and give them a much needed centerman

What is all the talk about Burke not having any interest in signing Nick Andropov. Watching Bob McGowan and Stephen Brundt on Rogers Monday they said Burke had recently offered Nick three years at a total of 3.5. He making 2-million this year so it was rejected immediately. Basically cutting his salary in half. And, according to these two reporters who a find very credible Burke got all full of himself and started the “Nick is not worth offering a contract at this time” campaign.

nah nah nah – it was 3.5 mill/season, over 3 years for Antropov. He turned it down, so Burke went to the press.

Bobcat reported it, he doesn’t know squat about the game per se, but he does have the who’s who in hockey media on his show, and gets some pretty decent inside info.

You gotta be with him in his campaign against Bettman.

As a Canadian hockey fan, it feels natural to dislike Bettman, no?

Why does Antropov get no respect? Personally I wouldn’t mind keeping Antropov a Leaf. Brian Burke may even want him back as a UFA in the summer after he gets a taste of the playoffs somewhere. That aside I think a first round pick for this guy is a bargain. I can’t imagine that there is not a GM out there that will not pay at least a mid first rounder for this guy. The only stat line on Antropov thats a little questionable is his plus/minus. But lets face it if the Leafs had recieved any kind of goaltending in the first 30-40 games that plus/minus wouldn’t be a factor. The guy is huge, he’s smart, he is physical, he covers the ice, he has good hands, he makes plays, he seems to be a team guy all the way, he is on pace for 25-30 goals, he doesn’t take stupid penalties anymore. Burkey: don’t let this guy go cheap. I predict either Pittsburgh, Columbus, Boston (because Chiarelli is smart- he will pay a first and a second), Minnesaota (because Lemairre is smart) will pay at very least a first for Nicky. Thoughts?
