Per Pension Plan Puppets:

“Vorobiev has heart trouble, not in Leafs‘ future plans.”

It appears that the KHL has been testing players in the wake of Alexander Cherepanov’s death, and Vorobiev may be at risk of a similar heart ailment.

    That is too bad, here hopes he gets well and treatment before something more serious happens.

    Who’s covering the game tonight?

    Glad to see they caught this before it became serious. At least one good thing came out of Cherepanov’s tragic death

    @Trev:
    I’m not sure who is doing the game. I’m working tonight so I may only be able to catch bits and pieces of it.

    @Rob:
    Yes, indeed. If this decision saves Vorobiev’s life, nothing else matters more.

    He failed the cardiologist test but reports haven’t indicated whether he has a fatal heart condition. That is still yet to be determined.

    I find it odd that Burke was quoted in saying that. Aside from not being Canadian he fits the prototypical burke-ian mold player.

    Thanks for the additional info, Chance.
    .
    Burke’s comments are likely related to the odds of Vorobiev coming to North America, regardless of his health. It has been previously speculated that Vorobiev had little interest in playing in the NHL, and was unlikely to be cross the pond anytime soon … not unlike Jonas Frogren, who was drafted by Calgary in 1998 but did not come to North America until the Leafs signed him 10 years later.

    Was skimming the hockeybuzz forums and it was hinted (perhaps even by the dapper Alex Tran himself) that the suspension might tempt Vorobiev into crossing the pond.
    .
    His main issue was his desire to play only in the NHL and not be sent straight to the minors. He had a great attachment to the team he was originally drafted by (HC Lada) but this season they traded him to a contending club (Salavat Yulaev). Could this change of scenery and this failed test now tempt him to seek approval to play over seas? Hopefully the guy is scary good.
    .
    Drafted in 2004 when he was I vaguelly recall about five twelve, the kid grew two inches and sits at a solid 6’1 211lbs. Labeled as a shut down defensemen then in following seasons his offensive ability skyrocketed becoming one of the premier puck moving blueliners. He hits, shoots, and is sound in his own zone. Even on the national team roster for Russia.
    .
    It’ll be a shame if his career ends so young.

    Luca Cereda II?
    *sigh*
    I hope Vorobiev can be treated. What Garrett said: nothing else matters more.

    Not to put a damper on all of this, but Cherepanov didn’t have a heart condition, he died from blood doping.

    Michael,
    I suppose you could say the link to Cherepanov is indirect. The testing that is done now in the KHL was put in place because of Cherepanov’s death. It is this testing which revealed Vorobiev’s condition.
