Random Thoughts: Minor Marlie Moves

With all the focus on the trade deadline the past few weeks, some minor moves by the Toronto Maple Leafs organization — namely with the AHL Marlies — have gone relatively unnoticed.

Mark Bell is no longer a Leaf, Boyd Devereaux is back in the NHL, and Bates Battaglia remains with the Marlies.

Mark Bell picked up on Re-Entry Waivers by the New York Rangers

So, who was surprised by this move?

Bell never was able to find his game in San Jose, so it stood to reason that he had little chance in Toronto when Ron Wilson took over behind the bench.   Bell had never developed to beyond a 3rd or 4th line checking winger (last season he looked more like the latter), and at 2.5 million a trade suitor was going to be very difficult to find.

Now, I’ve always liked Bell, and I believe he could still be an effective player in this league, but only at a price tag equivalent to his role.   It seems the New York Rangers believe this as well, and having to pay only half of his pro-rated remaining salary (about 650k, meaning NYR pays only 325k), they are effectively getting a 4th line checker for less than the league minimum.

Whether or not Bell gets his chance at the NHL level again remains to be seen.   Certainly, he will have a better chance with the Rangers than the Leafs, who it appears had all but given up on him.   Personally, I hope that he does get his shot; in the proper role (4th line or 13th forward), and with the proper expectations, he can still be a useful player on many teams.   Here’s wishing him all the best in the future.

Boyd Devereaux back with the Leafs

This move should be pleasing to all Leaf fans.   It appeared as though Devereaux was recalled for the same reason as Mark Bell:  to see if there was any interest on the re-entry wire.    However, he was not picked up, and as a result has been able to appear in 3 games so far, hopefully more.

Devereaux is one of those players that you just can’t help but like.   Although he never did develop into the offensive force he was projected to be, he swallowed his pride and re-dedicated himself to learning the defensive side of the game, building a solid career as an energy player in the process.   This past season, he willingly accepted his demotion to the minors – no small thing for a player with over a decade of NHL experience.  He has been a terrific leader for the team, and his recent promotion back to the NHL – regardless of the circumstances – is his just reward for being a loyal soldier for the organization.

Devereaux can still be an impact player in the NHL, as a penalty killer and versatile defensive wizard who plays all three forward positions.   He is the ideal 13th forward, a player who can still have a positive impact spelling injured forwards and guys who simply need a night off.   Nobody should be too upset if this character player, class act, and tremendous example to the young players remains with the Leafs through the trade deadline.

Bates Battaglia remains in the AHL

Will Bates Battaglia be next on the re-entry wire?   I personally doubt it, since he has now been an NHL regular in only one season since the lockout (82 games in 06-07, 13 games in 07-08).   Bates has always been a team player, and similar to Devereaux he never did complain about being sent to the minors.  He has found some success at the AHL level, but will that generate enough interest for him to be picked up on re-entry waivers?  Or are the Leafs better off to simply let his contract run out in the AHL?

My guess is the latter.   Battaglia is 33, which is the point at which players begin to slow down.   While he has previously been effective in the grinder’s role at the NHL level, he is ultimately a replaceable player, and many teams will lean towards giving their own prospects a shot at that role, before an NHL veteran who hasn’t played at that level in two seasons (and four of the past five).    Leaf fans should be content to hold onto Battaglia, as he has been an important piece of the Marlies’ puzzle this season both on and off the ice.   The leadership and experience he brings to the young AHL team far outweigh any contributions he would make on NHL ice.   And that’s not a knock on him either – Bates has future head coach written all over him.

    Interesting take on the “Game Plan” today with Doug Maclean.

    He says he’s hearing that Burke is looking for a Pronger-like return for Tomas Kaberle: Think 1st rounder, top prospect, young roster player.

    Doug doesn’t think Burke will get it, but does say that he thinks he will get at least a top prospect, 1st round pick and 2nd round pick.

    I agree with MacLean. Kaberle is one of the top offensive defensemen in the game, but is certainly not a complete player, the way Pronger is.

    Kipper on HC @ Noon today was hearing the same thing about Burke looking for a Pronger-like return, and is also hearing that while Burke may not get that exact price, teams will come very close and Kaberle will be moved.

    I’m sorry but any team with scouts will see the obvious flaws in Kaberle’s own-zone game as well as his lack of physicality…. that makes it quite clear he does not have the same value as a complete blue-liner like Chris Pronger.

    I was thinking that Kubina refusing to wave his no-trade may force Burke to trade Kabs now, rather than hanging on to him or waiting until the draft. Can’t wait to see the return though. Also glad to see Devereaux back up, he was a solid foot-soldier last year, and a useful player to have in your depth chart.
    Also yeah, that looks like bloodstains all over the Marlies site. And it’s not even Halloween…

    @Alec: It’s Burke’s way of saying he is going to have to be blown away by an offer to move Kaberle … which fits right in with the concerns he expressed over how to replace him on the roster.

    @Betterforsome: The new-look for the Marlies site is right cool, IMO.

    That I agree with, Garrett, it’s just that the Pronger comparison is nearly laughable in my opinion.

    Since this is an article about the Marlies I’m suprised nobody has brought up Tim Stapleton. This guy is leading the team in points in the AHL and was pretty good out in the Finish league when he played there. His contract is up at the end of the year, has he not been called up yet because they are worried about him being taken on re-entry? I’d love to see what this guy could do with the Leafs.

    That comparison is ridiculous to me, too. Like I said, Kaberle is a great offensive defenseman … but is not a complete player by any stretch. I think MacLean’s view of his trade value is a far more accurate assessment.
    .
    Interesting footnote regarding Devereaux:
    In 607 NHL games, Boyd Devereaux is a career +2. For a player who has spent the bulk of his career on the fourth line, this is a rather amazing statistic.

    @Jonah:
    Stapleton is on a two-way contract as far as I am aware, so re-entry waivers shouldn’t be an issue for him. This is his first pro season (played in Europe previously), so I wouldn’t be surprised if he remained with the Marlies through the rest of the year. If his solid play continues into next season, expect him to be considered for an NHL call-up at that time.

    @Garrett:
    His contract is also up with the Leafs/Marlies at the end of this year though, and while the Leafs look at their goaltending future (Pogge), Stapleton looks like he has the potential to crack into a first / second line role in the future (I say this purely on his stats as I have not been to a Marlies game, something I’m sure Leaf management has…) I would think that they would be interested in seeing if this guy can play in the NHL and if its worth signing him to another contract at the end of this year…

    Here’s why the Pronger-type return somewhat makes sense in my opinion:
    1. When Pronger was dealt, he was 3 months away from being 33 years old.
    2. He posted 56 points in 80 games played.
    3. He was making 6.250M for the season.
    4. He had just come off the 1st year of his 5 year 31.25M dollar contract with the Oilers.
    Kaberle:
    1. Kaberle is under a week away from being 32.
    2. Kaberle has 30 points in 49 games and was on pace for 50+ point season.
    3. He is making 4.25M this season.
    4. Kaberle still has 2 more years remaining on his contract.
    So essentially, you’re trading a guy who is 2.25M less than Pronger, is just as offensive, is arguably the best puck carrying defenseman in the game, makes way less money compared to guys like Streit, Campbell, Boyle, Niedermayer, Lidstrom, and Chara, and can still provide the same powerplay quarterback. Asking for near a Pronger return – Pronger was dealt for two 1sts, prospect, and player – and the Leafs are requesting a first, prospect, and player, isn’t exactly that “extreme”.
    Kaberle, with 2 years a 4.25M, is worth that. Teams looking for that extra edge in a star Dman who is cheap and gives them that extra 3M they wouldn’t have with the guys listed above is more than worth it.

    I imagine he gets re-signed, but don’t get too enamored in his AHL statistics. He is a gifted offensive player, but his physical and defensive play leave a lot to be desired. A fair comparison is Jeremy Williams, or Kyle Wellwood minus the work ethic concerns. This is why I would re-sign him, but not rush him to the NHL until he can improve in those areas.

    Michael:
    Pronger is a physical force and is far more reliable in his own zone than Kaberle. That is where the difference in value emerges … two-way effectiveness.

    @Jonah:
    Stapleton will be RFA this summer, so you shouldn’t have any concerns about him re-signing in Toronto. Given his solid campaign with the Marlies, he should receive a qualifying offer early in the offseason.

    @Michael: Pronger and Kaberle may have similar offensive numbers, but Kaberle has always been weak defensively, and is no where near as physical as Pronger is. The contract is great, Kaberle is not the game changer Pronger is though.
    @Garrett: Good to know about his weak physical and defensive play as that would be a good reason why he has not been brought up to the big leagues yet.

    The Oilers thought that the Pronger-Kaberle value comparison was close enough since they only wanted Steen tossed in as well.

    You would have to take in more than just physical and skills comparisons when looking at the return on trades too (ie contract value and term).

    Jonah,
    I think he will get his shot, but my guess is it will be next season as the youth movement continues. Keeping him in the AHL for the remainder of the season should increase the chances of no other team putting in an offer on him while he is RFA.

    @PPP:
    Reputation is also an important factor. Outside of Toronto, Pronger is known as a game-changing defenseman, and is viewed in many circles as a future Hall Of Fame candidate. Kaberle, whether just or unjust depending on your point of view, is simply not seen in the same light. How a rival GM perceives a player is as big a factor in potential trade return as any statistic.

    I think what Mike was getting at is that Kaberle is 2M less than Pronger, and thus worth the same return, minus a pick. Less one 1st rounder and 2M cheaper is equivalent to the defensive game Pronger produces and the 1st that went for him. Teams can then use that money to provide a stay at home defenseman to play alongside Kaberle, thus getting 2 dmen for the price of pronger.

    He’s basically saying that GM’s need to bring their A-game.
    .
    He has set his price very high in the event that other GM’s will be low-balling him with offers. If the original price is set as high as it is, an offer that doesn’t match up can still be an incredible offer.
