Breaking Rumor! Pens and Leafs?

Turns out, there’s speculation that the trade between Anaheim and Pittsburgh was an inadvertent 3 way trade with the Maple Leafs. That’s right, that big Ryan Whitney trade was for the bigger picture.

The rumor has Tomas Kaberle and a forward, believed to be Matt Stajan, going to the Penguins in exchange for Jordan Staal and Eric Tangradi. The move also gives the Ducks the opportunity to move out one of Pronger or Niedermayer, while it is believed the Niedermayer brothers could be on their way to New Jersey, surprise surprise.

Why this trade makes sense:

The Leafs would finally get their number one centerman with Mitchell and Grabovski filling in the 2nd and 3rd line roles, and land a great prospect who, you guessed it, was drafted by Burke himself in 2007. Tangradi has grown into what is considered the ideal power forward… wait a minute, this sounds familiar, wasn’t Burke trying to swing a deal with Boston to bring in Blake Wheeler, another power forward? Yes, that’s right; Burke is going about the right way in getting the type of player he wants.

It’s believed the Penguins wanted to get a deal done with Toronto, but as Burke demanded a top prospect, something the Penguins are short on after their trade last year for Hossa, they had to ship out Whitney to get it.

The breakdown, if the trade happens, would look like this:

Pittsburgh Adds: Kaberle, Stajan, Kunitz
Pittsburgh Drops: Whitney, Staal
Toronto Adds: Staal, Tangradi
Toronto Drops: Kaberle, Stajan

No word as of yet if a pick is also involved, but I for one would find this speculated deal to be rather interesting for both sides, and would definitely be a Brian Burke type trade. The Leafs would receive a gifted centerman locked up for similar dollar figures as Kaberle, and get a young up and coming prospect who could be their number 1 or 2 winger for years to come.

What are your thoughts on all the speculation? One thing is for sure, this, my friends, is the most wonderful time of the year. The Hockey holiday – 6 Days Away.

I know we are in a rebuild but I’d take Pronger for that. Anyone else?

Yah at this point in the season, so close to the deadline so many guys will say ‘wouldn’t it be nice if” and that usually translates into “The Leafs are getting so and so”. Thats why I put no stock into Eklunds rumours because most of them are just that.

I’m biased as Peterborough native, but Jordan Staal’s an immense talent who has all the tools to become an effective number one center if given the proper opportunity that he will never receive in Pittsburgh. That said, I doubt Burke moves Kaberle unless a first round pick is involved. Both Staal and Tangradi are still question marks, although seem like perfect Burke players. I would take this deal personally, but I’m not so sure Burke would. He wants to hit the jackpot with Kaberle and I don’t think this quite does it for him.

Interesting and appealing trade. Staal would be nic ebut the real prize might turn out to Tangradi…he has potential to be a real monster.

I like Tangradi though. Big kid who can skate, score and fight and is really very much your old school power forward prospect.

    Todd Bertuzzi-esque.

P.S., not sure if everyone remembers, but Tangradi’s the kid who high sticked Didomencico from the bench during Chris’ goal celebration during the Canada-USA game at the World Juniors which started some serious beef between both sides. If this deal does indeed go down, it should make for an awkward moment at next year’s prospect camp.

Couldn’t agree more with that assessment, Alex, and I agree Alec, as much as the trade sounds great, I do see Burke holding out for that one explosive deal to put them over the edge. If anything, this could be the trade Burke uses as leverage with other teams as he plainly says “this is the trade to beat” while negotiating.

First of all, I thought Whitney was shipped out because they had a surplus of offensive-defensemen in Pittsburgh? If that was the case, this trade doesn’t make much sense for them.

Secondly, that elbow to Hagman was plain dirty. How did nobody go after Witt later in the game for that?

Funny thing about Stapleton, he couldn’t even crack our roster in October, but now is looking like a great addition. I guess the time w/the Marlies did some good for him. Just read a blog on hockeyleaks.com and there’s a rumor that Antro to Van for Grabner and a 1st…….i’d rather have Schneider or Hodgson, but Grabner is still a descent prospect.

But after tonights game against the Bruins……….Pronger will definitely be out of town sure…..wouldn’t mind him in Blue/White…..w/1year left on contract…it couldn’t hurt either.

Thanks Alec . I agree 100 %. On Pronger, I think the Ducks would want way more than that. Picks, Prospects and a roster player much like Burke wants for Kab. I dont see it at all but if it were true I`d do it . Rebuild or not.

Shocking this point streak hasnt brought out the `we can make the playoffs`chants. Or are Leaf fans truely sick of 9th place

Well, I’m for one a little worried, we’re playing very well with Kabby out of the line up and if this or any great trades go down, we’ll be back to square one like last year…

Agree Alex!! Of course Hodgson would be huge, Grabner (21 goals in 47 games) and a first is decent.

    TO TOR:
    Chris Pronger

    TO ANA
    Matt Stajan
    Nik Antropov

A rumor going around a few radio stations or something, AM640 (Andy Frost) is reporting it right now. Says deal doesn’t make any sense unless Burke has a subsequent trade lined up for Pronger…

    Discuss

Also stated that if it were to go down, it might be a 3 way trade where Pronger could end up in another city and Toronto gets something more in return………..if this makes any sense, pls let me know

Talking to some Pens fans it seems like this has 0 chance happening. They are not looking for anymore puck moving defensemen and don’t want kaberle, and that they don’t need stajan as Talbot fills his role just fine.

I’ll underline this as wishful thinking more than a rumor for now.

I don’t think it makes much sense personally.

If a team wants Pronger why not deal directly with Anaheim? And why would Anaheim flip him to Toronto for a small return only to have them flip him to another team for a larger return?

I can see Toronto getting involved in terms of facilitating a deal by absorbing cap from one of the teams (probably the one that needs to fit Pronger), but that’s about it.

And let’s keep in mind people. When was the last time a 3-way trade of this magnitude was pulled off? Pre-cap era even? Next to impossible IMO.

Wow, just because “Pens Fans” say they don’t want it it’s not going to happen? The’s the worst attempt to quell a rumor I’ve ever heard. “Leafs fans don’t like Stempniak so that trade never happened either” haha
