Breaking Rumor! Pens and Leafs?

Turns out, there’s speculation that the trade between Anaheim and Pittsburgh was an inadvertent 3 way trade with the Maple Leafs. That’s right, that big Ryan Whitney trade was for the bigger picture.

The rumor has Tomas Kaberle and a forward, believed to be Matt Stajan, going to the Penguins in exchange for Jordan Staal and Eric Tangradi. The move also gives the Ducks the opportunity to move out one of Pronger or Niedermayer, while it is believed the Niedermayer brothers could be on their way to New Jersey, surprise surprise.

Why this trade makes sense:

The Leafs would finally get their number one centerman with Mitchell and Grabovski filling in the 2nd and 3rd line roles, and land a great prospect who, you guessed it, was drafted by Burke himself in 2007. Tangradi has grown into what is considered the ideal power forward… wait a minute, this sounds familiar, wasn’t Burke trying to swing a deal with Boston to bring in Blake Wheeler, another power forward? Yes, that’s right; Burke is going about the right way in getting the type of player he wants.

It’s believed the Penguins wanted to get a deal done with Toronto, but as Burke demanded a top prospect, something the Penguins are short on after their trade last year for Hossa, they had to ship out Whitney to get it.

The breakdown, if the trade happens, would look like this:

Pittsburgh Adds: Kaberle, Stajan, Kunitz
Pittsburgh Drops: Whitney, Staal
Toronto Adds: Staal, Tangradi
Toronto Drops: Kaberle, Stajan

No word as of yet if a pick is also involved, but I for one would find this speculated deal to be rather interesting for both sides, and would definitely be a Brian Burke type trade. The Leafs would receive a gifted centerman locked up for similar dollar figures as Kaberle, and get a young up and coming prospect who could be their number 1 or 2 winger for years to come.

What are your thoughts on all the speculation? One thing is for sure, this, my friends, is the most wonderful time of the year. The Hockey holiday – 6 Days Away.

I just saw that, haha been reading their comments and a bunch of them were just “Not going to happen because Kaberle sucks” or “Not going to happen because this guy is unreliable”… did I do something wrong? I was informed of a major rumor and passed it on lol This is what the deadline is all about. As for Kaberle sucks, when did that happen? haha

Its the we made it far last year syndrom……we had it in the late 90′s early 00′s. Complete denile that the team is tanking……

My fav Pens fan quote on that board ” guess Tanger, Orpik, Gill, Scuderi who were playing in the cup finals last season have no experience going into the playoffs right? nobody is saying that Letang or Gogo are better than Kaberle right now, what people are saying is that we don’t need Kaberle because we already have puck moving defenders covered, sure Kaberle would be an upgrade on the current situation, but there are more important issues that need addressing that our moveable assets would be used to fix.” from Morozov

they cleary don’t need a seasond D man cause that core has been doing so well

Everyone talks about the next couple of years being hard on most hockey markets to the south Pitty could be part of this…..Stall might be a salary dump if not now down the road.

Yeah, I have to agree. I really have no idea whether or not this trade will even go down, but if it does, it’s at least a foot in the right direction for the Leafs. I’m just very curious to see what Burke will actually do. Everything is just speculation right now, but if Burke does anything less than trade one of Kaberle/Kubina, I’ll be disappointed in his GM skills.

Lets look at it like this. Whitney was underachieving and needed a change of scenery. Staal is stuck behind the big two. The Leafs need a lot to rebuild. Staal fits in with the Leafs plans, as would Tangradi, and the pick obviously. Kaberle could be moved because he is our biggest asset and would get this thing rolling. If Stajan is actually part of this said deal then thats perfect for Pittsburgh. They get there third line centerman, replace Whitney and boost there back end. The trade makes sense for both sides, maybe Goligoski would be involved instead of the pick creating the need for Kaberle in Pittsburgh and the need for Goligoski in Toronto, I dunno.

This is (by far) the most ridiculous trade rumor i’ve heard all year. Why would the Pens give up Staal & Tangrandi for Kaberle & Stajan? This deal would be great for TO & God-awful for Pitt.

That’s a possibility, Ryan. I mean, there are already reports circulating, I believe by Al Strachan, on the fact that the Leafs will not need 1 of Grabovski or Stajan at the end of the year. It’s a matter of which one you want to hang onto.

If Pitts had enough puck moving d-men they wouldn’t have been so desparate to get Gonchar back. If Toronto does land Pronger, they should get him for cheap. Anahiem is one of those teams that is being punished by their cap situation and they need a remedy. Today’s trade only added more to the cap. For the same reason I can see them trading Giguere. Back to Pitts though, I’ve followed them closely and they definitely NEED a player like Kaberle. Gonchar is fading and to have someone like Kaberle locked up for cheap on a team that is also struggling to keep under the cap makes Kaberle all the more sweeter. Other than that, they could use some more toughness for this year’s playoffs.

    @ Alex
That douche with the high-stick on DiDo at the WJC was Tangradi?!? Argh! Hahha, if this deal were to ever happen I hope someone gives him a little (not harmful) tough-love at training/prospect camp.

    @ Micheal
Understandable that you are not obligated to give up your source, but without naming names can you at least tell us if it is an NHL executive vs. a friend sitting in his basement? A ‘source’ can be anything and it’d be nice to know if it is a somewhat credible. Such as someone who works in the league/reputable media outlet, in order to consider whether it is an actual rumour or just fan fiction.
    .
That said, I like the deal for the Leafs. Would love their 1st round pick and would consider it highway robbery of the Pens. Doesn’t make much sense for Pitts though, IMO.

Dan – I got my information from a well-known site specifically followed for entertainment purposes based on their rumors and insight. They are pretty credible, but whether this was just a deal that was discussed or proposed is out of my territory.

    RE: Pronger
    .
Anaheim will want a huge return for him. Something that the Leafs cannot afford to give up. Also, I don’t think he is worth it. At his age, with only one year remaining on his deal, what would be the point? Seriously? He can help us finish 11th place next year? No thanks.

No problem, I understand how people feel when things are reported without sources, much like Eklund with “claimed” sources, you just take it for what it’s worth and move on lol

Talk about a news breaker if this came to fruition.

As a Leaf fan I’d have to look closer at the deal to give an honest opinion.

I only followed this site just recently. But would you be able to answer if any of your rumors you heard in the past from this exact source actually came out to be spot on later on?

Just trying to see how credible they have been, how credible the source is. If they have been right before than this might have some possibility, but if not than we can probably treat this as any other rumor that isn’t likely like many of eklunds.

Yah thats all I was curious about too was whether this was an Eklund type source or somebody that could be pretty trustworthy. The fact is though this deal probably has been discussed who knows, there are 6 days until the deadline and so much will go on before now and then that there are probably other offers close to this that have been discussed and we may never know about it. I think Burke is all talk in the media and is trying to downplay himself, but in reality he wants to make some big moves, I hope.

This same source mentioned in the past that Steen was going to St. Louis, but failed to recognize beforehand that Colaiacovo was going as well. He also didn’t know that it was Stempniak coming, he thought Brad Boyes was returning. So yeah, as much as he is credible, he can still be off a bit. It’s just a matter of how the domino falls.
