What would YOU do?

So here is the situation:

You’re Brian Burke, you’re 6 days from Trade Deadline 2009. You get a phone call from Garth Snow and he has an offer for you. A really big offer.

The offer is…

To TOR: NYI 1st Rd Draft Pick in 2009

To NYI: Luke Schenn

Now I think it’s safe to say that the Islanders’ pick will be first overall. And the Leafs will also have a 3rd to 6th pick in this draft.

So the questions is… What would YOU do?

Anyone who doesnt do it is a fool. …even if the Isles finish 2nd, Hedman will be twice the player of Schenn. …if Schenn were in this draft he’d be ranked 7~8 at best, behind Cowen!

100%!!! (assuming, the Isles have already won the lottery and have the 1st overall)

Schenn has the potential to be a 25+ minutes shut down defender who might score 30-35 points. Comparisons include Foote, Komisarik, Robyn Regehr, etc). Some might say he’s already at those levels, or at least close.

Tavares on the other hand can be an elite scorer in the NHL, who will put up 40+ goals and 100+ points (Thornton, Heatley, Lecaveliar, etc). Worst case scenario, he becomes a 30+ goals and 80+ points guy (Richards)

So question becomes do you trade (in their prime) Adam Foote for Joe Thornton. The answer is NO

So for the Leafs this means:

Tavares + Cowen OR The Schenn Brothers

    Tavares > B Schenn
    Cowen =< L Schenn

    @nobody
Nobody expected Schenn to be as good as he is b4 the draft last year. I think Schenn is the first piece of the puzzle and I don’t think it would be adviseable to trade him. I think the Leafs will get a solid player from their own doing in the draft. Hopefully a stud like Duchene and and later round pick from a trade this year’s trade deadline.

Nope. Luke Schenn is a stud. A trade is a backwards move. The ONLY way you trade Schenn is if you can get someone to grossly overpay. I’m talking, makes the Gilmour trade look even.

I’m really warming up to the Leafs drafting Brayden Schenn. It’s a cute thought to ‘get both brothers!’, but here’s how I look at it:

At this point in time, the Leafs have potential to draft anywhere from #1-#7. However, it’s more likely that they draft between #3-#6. This means that they aren’t going to get an absolute ace (franchise player). In fact, they probably won’t even get a guy who can play in the NHL for at LEAST one season. Therefore, they won’t be able to address getting a stud 40+ goal scorer forward like Tavares.

If they trade any of their vets (Kubina, Kaberle, Antropov, Ponikarovsky) there aren’t exactly prospects banging on the door of the NHL for next year. Therefore, they are probably going to get worse next year. That means they should be drafting somewhere between #1 and #5. They’ll have as good a chance at getting Taylor Hall as they will John Tavares.

So- Burke should just do the smart move. Add a piece to the puzzle. Get a guy that will fill an important role. Brayden Schenn looks to be a safe pick to be a gritty guy. Hit, score, fight, block shots, kill penalties. The Leafs could sure use a guy like that.

I would set my goals on either getting Tavares (Touchdown) or Schenn (Field Goal). Now, if only they could find a way to stockpile picks, land Tavares, and trade some other picks to move up for Schenn…

I would not do this deal unless it was 2 firsts, a roster player, and Garth’s first born. The reason I say this is because of the UFA market that is going to yeild a great world class goal scorer in the next 2 years. Why trade a Luke Schenn for JT when one more year of not being a winning team gets yet another round of picks to build the farm and the ability to pick up a Rick Nash. I personally would rather a Nash over Taveres sorry but I like his size and all around game of just pure goals. I also think that pure goal scorers are needed but available more often then a Luke Schenn, Shea Weber, or Dion Phaneuf.

The Peguins trade????? Up or down with Kaberle’s market value???

If Garth Snow desperately needed Schenn, they would’ve picked Schenn 5th overall in last year’s draft, instead they traded away their 5th pick to get Josh Bailey whos decent. I doubt Garth wuld trade his 1st for Schenn. But who knows? I mean Burke said he was offered a top 5 pick for Schenn, i wonder who that team is… It could be the Sens. haha

first up because there is a lottery the NYIsles do not necessarily have the first overall, but it is an interesting idea it would give the Leafs 2 picks in the top 6 or so. Schenn is looking more and more like the real deal and because of that I believe the 1st by itself wouldn’t be enough, that being said if the Isles threw in their own 2nd and a prospect such as Kirill Petrov in particular. then as blasphemous to Leafs fans as it sounds you make the deal

I’d take that deal, trade down to 2nd, and draft Victor Hedman.

That guy’s doing better than Lidstrom was in the SEL…

He’s going to be a FANTASTIC player, and will be an impact player next year right away.

Then I’d take one of the highly rated forwards like Duchene or Kane at the #4 or 5 spot and be very content.

I take it, and at the draft, holding #1 + #5, use the #5 pick + to move up and hold the top 2 picks and take Tavares + Hedman … lol pie in the sky, I know.

Seriously though, depending on the team’s scouting on Cowen, and how likely his ACL(or MCL?) will be affected long term, I take the pick and at the draft, trade down to 7th and take Cowen there, kind of like what Snow did last year. Then, hopefully Oliver Roy is still available at the 37-38 spot to grab.

Ultimately, this is pie in the sky thinking, and will never happen. Isles wouldn’t trade their 1st for anyone other than Crosby, Malkin, or Ovechkin at this point.

cant trade schenn who has proven he can play in the nhl for someone who is yet to be drafted and is still unproven. be a bad deal. unless nyi gave up more than just their first over-all. would need a 2nd or 3rd round pick a present roster player or potential star. something mixed with those ideas. we are talking about 18 years olds so saying they be something is just a guess until it actually happens.

Schenn has turned out to be more of a monster (a la Pierre) than anyone had projected (including Garth) and like many other already pointed out he is the prototypical player (hopefully) to build a championship team around. If I was Burke, the only way I part with this tested (albeit less than a full season) franchise player is if Garth offered the 1st draft picks for this and next year (i.e. almost a guarantee for Hall). If this fantasy scenario would pan out, I would trade down to the second position (per Atlanta or Tampa Bay, who ever is second and also take their 32nd overall pick for this year along with elite prospect) and take Hedman.
    .
Alternatively, Kaberle+ for NYI or Atlanta/TB’s 1st straight up.
    .
    Crazy? Yes.

I know this is all hypothetical. So..

If Snow were to offer the said deal to the Leafs, that in itself shows how highly he regards Schenn, and his importance to building a championship team.

That, to me, says right there that the deal should be squashed.

I wouldn’t trade Schenn for a first overall, straight up. But if the Isles made it two first rounders (one being first overall) I would have a hard time saying no. There’s the off chance neither will become as good as Schenn, but if you’re rebuilding – the quicker the better.

As good as Schenn has played for being so young, he hasn’t been an absolute shut down D yet, and who knows, he may never be at this level. There’s risks on both sides of the argument.

Great post. If this is in relation to the Burke saying he did get a call, I would bet significant ca$h (hey, we will never know the truth so why not :) ) that the call wasn’t from the Islanders. I would hedge towards St. Louis or Tampa Bay. The Islanders need a marquee player especially if they go into a new building.

    HOLY OVERRATING BATMAN!

Schenn’s very solid, but he’s never gonna be a two-way, top 5 defenseman in the league. John Tavares could very well become the next top 1 forward in the league. Plus you still have that pick in the top 5. I’d do it, no hesitation
