What would YOU do?

So here is the situation:

You’re Brian Burke, you’re 6 days from Trade Deadline 2009. You get a phone call from Garth Snow and he has an offer for you. A really big offer.

The offer is…

To TOR: NYI 1st Rd Draft Pick in 2009

To NYI: Luke Schenn

Now I think it’s safe to say that the Islanders’ pick will be first overall. And the Leafs will also have a 3rd to 6th pick in this draft.

So the questions is… What would YOU do?

“A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.”

John Tavares looks great, but I don’t think I’d give up a guy like Schenn who looks like a stud at the NHL level already.

Tavares could be the next Daigle.

I tell them wait to the draft. I’m not trading Schenn for a chance at the first overall pick (Knowing the Leafs luck they would not get the first pick overall, meaning they would not get the choice of Tavares or Hedman, just whichever is left). I want to make sure I’m getting 1st overall.

But if I was offered the first overall pick for Luke Schenn I think I would do it. If I had the chance to bring in Tavares, as great as Schenn has been, you are talkin about a player who looks like he can be a 40+ goal scorer in the NHL, and really shows up in important games (World Juniors)

Keep Schenn, Burke wouldn’t do that anyway. He says he builds from the back end out, so that would go against what he preaches. Not to mention Schenn has been a surprise on a sub-par team and shows great leadership skills also, on top of his solid defence. If this is what we can get out of a 19 year old kid then what can we get out of him when he is 22-23. The future looks bright for him.

Pretty risky. What if the Isles lose the draft lottery?
I wouldn’t do it unless some kind of guarantee was put in place.

If we were guaranteed to get first overall, I’d do it.

I wouldn’t do the trade. They’re two completely different type of players. Teams who do well have both types of players on their team so there’s no sense in sacrificing one for the other. The Leafs have a good shot at getting a good goal scorer where they sit now.

I would keep Schenn. He looks like he will be an amazing defenseman at the NHL level. The only way I would even consider it if it was after the draft lottery and the Isles already had the 1st overall pick. The Irony of making the trade before the lottery is the Leafs (with the Islanders pick) would not be garanteed the #1 pick. In fact, the Leafs original 1st round pick even has a chance of being #1 overall.

    KEEP SCHENN

No way would I trade. We had enough bad luck in the last few years. Keep Schenn and draft a 3-6 guy. Look back the last few years at guys takin well after the first 2, but in the first round. Richards and Carter in Philly are a good example. I would rather have a guy who could be one of those 2 and Schenn anyday

Not way, not a chance. Tavares is unproven, Schenn has shown he can play. Why would you give up a proven commodity for an unknown? It is an unnecessary gamble that the Leafs can ill afford to be wrong on. They will get a very solid prospect wherever they pick in the upcoming draft. Stick to the plan.

I wouldn’t do it. The question you have to ask is, what makes your team stronger?
    .
Let’s say you do the deal as proposed. You get Tavares, whose could maybe be an NHL scoring star, and if fortunate Jared Cowan falls to the Leafs at #4 or 5. If he traded Schenn, Burke would no doubt draft a d-man with his second first-rounder to replace him. However, Cowan’s potential at the NHL level is also unknown, and his injury this season makes him even more of a draft risk.
    .
Let’s say you don’t do the deal. You keep Schenn, with whom you know what you have already: a recently-drafted blueliner who has already proven his NHL worth. Assuming the Leafs pick 4th or 5th, you are looking at one of Jordan Schroeder, Matt Duchene, or Brayden Schenn. Similar to Tavares, it is pure speculation as to what these players’ NHL potential will be. Simply put, nobody can know with any draft pick until they actually play at the NHL level what their impact will be.
    .
So, where are you better off? Starting over with two draft picks whose potential is unknown, or a proven stud and one draft pick whose potential is unknown?
    .
Given that under the trade scenario proposed the second first-rounder would almost certainly be a defenseman (Tavares being the first pick), it stands to reason that the Leafs would be further ahead to hold onto the sure thing and drafting a scoring forward whose NHL potential is unknown, than trading the sure thing and drafting two players whose NHL potential is unknown.
    .
It sounds sexy to move Schenn for Tavares, sure, but the fact remains that one great player doesn’t win a team a championship … a talent-filled roster does. So if you already have one piece of that roster in place, why move it for what is ultimately a question mark – as all draft picks are until they actually play?

Penguins just traded defenseman Ryan Whitney to Anaheim for winger Chris Kunitz and forward prospect Eric Tangradi.
    .
Interesting on a couple of levels.
    .
1 – gives Pittsburgh the power forward they have been lacking, and a very good forward prospect
2 – this deal says a lot about Goligoski
3 – gives a ton of credence to the Pronger and/or Neidermayer trade rumours, now that Whitney is in the fold

If you knew the pick was going to be first, I would pull the trigger on this. Trade Schenn, get Tavares, and trade for another first round pick so that you can get another defense prospect. But like some people are saying here, not worth risking if the Isles can lose the lottery.

I think you need to ask yourself what would you want more. Luke Schenn+Brayden Schenn, Kane, Dushene, ect or Tavrese. For me this is easy. I’ll take any of those 2 over just JT.

I mis understood the offer. I thought it was saying out first and schenn. I Because realistically it would take more than Schenn to get Snow to pull the trigger. It would take an over payment to get the Isles pick this year.

I don’t think that offer came from the Isles.

But to answer the question again. I would do it. Schenn has been great so far, but so will JT, and if we ended up not winning the lottery it’s likely a #2 pick with Hedmen which also is a cant lose pick. But I only would do this if it’s the Isles pick. Anyone else, nope.

It is my belief that the draft lottery is fixed, therefore I’d keep what I have.
Gary will do what he can to keep the top talent in the US, and as far south as possible.

    Great question Jeff,

Framed differently…. As in, AFTER the Isles win the lottery and choose Tavares, the Isles offer the Leafs Tavares for Schenn, straight up.

Then… I do the deal, no question. I may shed a few tears, but after I wipe them away I will realize that I now have in my possession a world class goal scorer. I then turn my attention to drafting the next Schenn.

So, apparently there is now an open spot on the Pens (eastern conference team!) roster for a highly skilled puck-moving defenseman. Hmmm…..

If we dealt Schenn I think our attention would have to be on defense so I don’t know why you would go for the next Schenn who is a forward and not a defense. We already would have a great goal scorer so imo you either take the next best defensemen or you take MSP to play the wing with JT, or you take Dushene to Centre the second line giving us more depth on another line.
