Leafs interested in Gerber?

Elliotte Friedman of CBC is reporting that the Toronto Maple Leafs have expressed interest in putting in a waiver claim on veteran goaltender Martin Gerber. It’s speculated that this surprising interest may be a result of two possible scenarios:

#1 – The Leafs have lined up an appropriate trading partner for Toskala and need a veteran goalie to stick in the net for the rest of the season.

#2 – As rumored for the past few weeks, Toskala may indeed be hurting and the Leafs may choose to shut him down for the rest of the season as he undergoes surgery.

Less than 20 hours to go.

Always a pleasure,

Alex Tran

Please be #1. In case of #2, I would hope Pogge would be recalled and given the starts.

Scenario #1) We get to trade Toskala and get picks….. also, look below
Scenario #2) We get to play two back ups and…..
    …..hail Tank Nation
    .
But we all know, it’s a secret scenaio #3 where Pogge, Stralman, and a 2nd are packaged to acquire Yanic Perrault

Well this is really interesting. I highly doubt Burke would bring in Gerber if Toskala is still around next season. If this is true, you’d have to think that Toskala’s on his way out.

@ roacho, gerber is UFA at the end of the year so it wouldn’t make a difference

    @theshawn
Oh I see. Providing the fact that Cujo played well on Sat and Pogge’s been ok, I’d find it strange that Gerber would be brought in cause Toskala’s done for the year. I truly think that if Burke’s bringing Gerber in, it’s because he’s shipping Toskala out.

Isn’t he on re-entry waivers? Wouldn’t it be half of 3.5?

And the cap hit would be half of Gerber’s salary and with Toskala off the books, it would be a cheap pick up…….guarantee drop in standings…….look at how their playing w/o Nik and Dom.

Don’t you think if a deal were iminent they would have sat Toskala for this game? AND if he really has hip issues and is going to require surgery who would really trade for him??

Is it just me, or has Toskala not played like he’s hurt. He’s been pretty good the last month or so, and he’s taken quite a few hits that (you would think) might hurt a goalie playing with an injury.

Finger hit him tonight and just a second ago he threw himself across the net with reckless abandon.

How hurt is this guy? I just don’t think he’d be worth trading right now. He’s not overly expensive and can’t get worse (can he). I’d go with Toskala and Pogge. Bring another netminder to camp (ie. Lalime, Biron, Roloson, Weekes- a guy that might be interested in fighting for a job)

i’m thinking vesa is going to be shut down… it’s the right thing to do… that way he can train over the summer instead of just rehab

Bill Watters made a good point a few days ago. When asked about the whole situation with Toskala being called out by Wilson/Burke, he believes Vesa was embarassed and as a means to defend himself he started saying how he’s been hurt.
A little bit of time later Toskala went for an MRI, that revealed no damage. That may have been done in order to restore any possible suitors’ confidence in pulling a trade for him.
I don’t know if all of this is true, but to me it makes sense. Cause as AcePinball said, he’s not playing like he’s hurt.

Remember Gerber on re-entry and a UFA at seasons end its not 50% of 3.5 million, its 50% of his current salary which may be 40% of 3.5 million

I suspect we may see a deal with Kubina and Antropov going to Boston for Tuka Rask and a First Rounder….possibly a 3rd as well.
