Post-Game: Leafs/Devils – Overtime Overload

On a night where the real buzz was focused on mounting trade talk, the Leafs tied a NHL record for consecutive overtime games.  Vesa Toskala played an exceptional game in net, and the Leafs came alive in the third period to transform an otherwise dull game into an exciting back-and-forth goaltender’s battle. After an almost full five minutes of riveting overtime play, Toronto eventually succumbed to an Oduya winner.

Here are some notes from this Tuesday night throwdown:

-Try to remember the last time the Leafs have entered the trade deadline in such a definitive “seller” position.  Don’t hurt yourself exerting too much effort with this one guys–it’s been a while.  It is definitely an unusual feeling to know that major pieces of our team will surely be moved before tomorrow’s deadline.

-Coming hand-in-hand with this were the two scratches of Nik Antropov and Dominic Moore.  Yet another repercussion of this trade deadline frenzy, and one that undoubtedly threw the Leaf squad off their game, as they seemed confused and listless on the ice for long stretches at a time.  This was of course coupled with going up against the best team league-wide in the new year: the New Jersey Devils.  The Devils will be at the very least Eastern Conference Finalists this year (you heard it here first).  Amazing depth on a forward corps that looks after business in their own end, a blueline group that gets their job done, and a man named Brodeur.

-From the mouth of Brian Burke himself, he turned down an offer of a late 2nd rounder for Ian White.  With the advent of “Tank Nation” has come a tendency of some keyboard-jockey, armchair-GMs to sensationalize draft picks.  It’s pretty common to see messages urging our GM to get rid of all of our skaters and the stickboy for as many draft picks as possible.  This is a far cry from reality.  While the mentality of “the more we have, the higher chance we get a good player” is stasticially correct, it’s hardly the best method.  A nice piece was written by Scott Cullen over at TSN.  The numbers don’t lie, and there is roughly a 25% chance that a player picked in that late 2nd round area would play at least 100 NHL games, and a much smaller chance that he would play the game at the same level as Ian White.  White has shown determination and consistent effort, and will be a great utility player down the road for this team.

-A lot of people were half-expecting Jason Blake to deteriorate into the perimeter-playing, puck-hogging player they knew so well upon the removal of Dominic Moore from his side.  Hopefully, we can all be reassured that Blake’s transformation has been completely his own.  He showed his usual doggedness on the puck and John Mitchell (the Moore heir-apparent) was one of the lucky benefactors tonight.

An interesting sidenote of this game was Tomas Kaberle’s absence from the third period of play.  While this had most of Leaf nation drooling at the thought that Burke had found a team willing to meet his king’s ransom for our Czech blueliner, it was later revealed that Tomas had not returned due to injury.  Of course, the questionable degree of this injury will lead to speculation that this is a tactical play by Brian Burke.  While we can say with a fair amount of confidence that Antropov and Moore have played their last games as Leafs, the other members of this Toronto squad that are on their way out is still very much a mystery.  Call in sick, skip your classes, and get ready for the most productive Toronto deadline-day in recent memory.

As always, interested to hear your thoughts.

Cheers,

Nik

Contract talks have reportedly broken off with Moore.
    .
Ponikarovski’s minutes were cut back during the entire game. Coupled with Antropov sitting this one out, it lends credence to the thought that both may go as a package deal.
    .
Burke reportedly headed to the dressing room during the second intermission. Kaberle’s injury happened in the second period. Was Burke checking on him? And if so, does that mean he hasn’t fully closed the door on dealing him? Interesting to say the least.
    .
If Vesa Toskala needs to be shut down as some have suggested, it hasn’t shown lately. 50 saves tonight, many of the Mike Palmateer flash-and-dash variety. I’d like to say it’s nice to see him back in form, but I’d also like to say it would be nice to have a lottery pick. I am seriously torn on how to feel about his resurgence.

what a game by Toskala… even though we lost … hats off to him. If he played like this throughout the season we would be 4th-6th in the Eastern Conference.

Sadly, we aren’t but I am really excited about the deadline. Hopefully we aren’t disappointed.

I secretly hoped that Kaberle remaining in the lineup was Burke’s way of telling all of his suitors to step up their offers, as he intended to make his stance that he’s willing to keep Kaberle more clear. In that same train of thought, Kaberle’s removal from the lineup over what had to be a minor injury may have just been his way of insuring that nothing serious did occur.

Then again, this is also likely just the wishful thinking that we’re all obsessing with.

Even Gus Kustaros or however you spell it was willing to part with White for a low 2nd rounder.. that is madness, we lose that trade hands down. White is solid, young, affordable and versatile. In my book, he stays.

We need to clearly define our blueline moving forward there are too many bottom three defenders on our roster.

    @ King
I am becoming convinced that he’s not going anywhere until the summer now. Apparently re-aggravating his broken hand. TSN reports that he had no strength in that hand after the game which could mean it’s broken again or never healed properly in the first place… who knows.

Nice to see John Mitchell step it up tonight with his increased ice time.

Wilson said after the game that they had given him the opportunity before and that he hadn’t stepped up… true comment.

But I think tonight he was more relaxed. Recognizing that both Moore and Antropov are gone he probably felt a lot less pressure…. lots of upside with this kid.

Lets hope there is a lot more to talk about tomorrow….. but I doubt it. My guess is that Moore, Antropov and maybe Mayers are gone. Don’t see much else.

    Cheers

What if Burke got a really great offer from a team that wasn’t on the”list”, and went down to see what kind of reaction/consideration he could get for the move from Kaberle?
Just a thought – for fun

Kabs hands are tied ( poor choice of words). Burke just has to say ” Its better than NYI or Atlanta” and Kabs gets the point. That way Burke doesnt ask him to waive. Lude point now.

    Prediction for tomorrow…. and I hate predictions….

The only players to leave Toronto will be Antropov, Moore and Mayers…. as I said above.

But I also predict Toronto takes on some salary from a buyer for a draft pick or two. (To clear cap space for said buyer).

    Cheers

Sorry guys, but I doubt this deadline will be productive. I think only Moore, Antro, and Mayers will go and we will just get picks in return.

Our best return will not be traded (kaberle) no matter how minor the injury is. Teams will ask for discounts and Burke will not budge.

I am pessimistic for this deadline, but I seriously wish I will be wrong.

I couldn’t agree more with Nik on the point ndk highlighted. It’s the fact that they are unknown commodities (sure, there’s a good chance we’ll never see this prospect in the NHL, but there’s also a chance the player will turn out being GREAT!) that make draft picks so seductive to many fans. Usually it’s these same fans that are quick to call those of us that rather stand pat with some of our assets “delusional.” The ironic part is that they too are being delusional in their own respect.

Yes, there’s a much stronger emphasis on drafting in a salary cap landscape. That doesn’t mean, when in Burke’s position, you lose all sound, practical judgment and just “go for picks.” What are the chances, for instance, that a late 2nd rounder ends up being anywhere near as serviceable as Ian White…. it’s not worth it just because the late second rounder might end up like _____ (fill in a former-second-round-draft-pick-turned-NHL star here).

If Kaberle stays, does Kubina go? Playing Kaberle at the trade deadline, just returning from an injury – how dumb can the Leafs really be? This is not hindsight – I said the same thing yesterday!

A few of you have suggested that only Antropov, Moore and Mayers will be moved by the Leafs at the deadline.

My gut feeling says you will be pleasantly suprised and that there will be nore action than you have anticipated. Burke speaks with a poker face – but I take whatever he is saying with a grain of salt. So – lots of moves – hopefully I’m right!

Certainly others that could easily be moved are Ponikarovsky, White, Van Ryn, Stajan, Grabovski and Hagman. Certainly none are untouchable! Picks and prospects for players! I feel that Ponikarovsky is almost sure to go!

@ Paynter Graham Hagman has a no-trade clause for the first year of his deal to avoid this very situation. Kubina also has a no-trade he’s declared he won’t waive. I agree with the others, it’s going to be fairly quiet. I was holding out hope for a Kaberle deal but between his injury tonight and Burke’s denials it looks like we’ll have to wait until the summer, when one of the Czech K’s should be dealt.
Still, we’ll probably come out of deadline day with a first round pick plus, and that’s not a bad day’s work.

The best stat you all need is that a second round pick has about a 25 percent chance of making an impact (and that would be over 100 games…. small impact).

Prospects are better than picks. They are already a prospect…..

Picks are better than giving away UFA’s.

UFA’s that come back next year are the best :)
