Post-Game: Leafs/Caps – Good God…Gerber?!?

Martin Gerber stole this game for the Toronto Maple Leafs.  A few months ago, that sentence would have made absolutely no sense for so many reasons.  In his first game as a Leaf, Gerber played in a fashion that will make more than a few Senator fans shake their heads in frustration.  Other than a late goal that broke his shutout, Toronto’s new Swiss goaltender stopped a Washington squad that has admittedly struggled of late.

Here are some notes from this Thursday night toss-up:
-Jeff Hamilton was definitely an interesting move by Brian Burke.  He was brought in to inject some offense into Burke’s NHL squad without drawing from the recently booming AHL development of players such as Jiri Tlusty and Tim Stapleton.  While Hamilton won’t be in the long term plans of the Maple Leafs, he’s a small firecracker with the ability to pot some goals.  Hell, you know you’re small when the barely six foot John Mitchell calls you “a little guy”

-Speaking of John Mitchell, he’s had a few good games riding shotgun with Jason Blake.  The kid has the tools to be the next Dominic Moore, and a capable third line forward down the road.  However, when he was smothered with plugs like Hollweg and May on fourth line duty he didn’t have the tools to support his speed or skill-set.  Here’s to one of the best indirect results of clearing out players at the trade deadline: the increased development of some of our youngsters.

-The summertime window where the NTC’s of Kaberle and Kubina will be lifted has been quite publicized.  So has the possibility that Burke held off trading them now, but fully intends to explore his options then.  One has to think if that is the case, then it has been a wise move.  We know Kaberle’s value, talent and contract taken into account, will not change.  Furthermore, Pavel’s value has continuously been on the rise after a lackluster start.  Kubina has played lights-out hockey the last month or so and has been reminding teams around the league why he is an offensive force to be reckoned with.

With a grating touch of irony, the goalie that many fans hoped would lead our charge back down the standings and towards the prize of a high draft pick began a movement in the exact opposite direction.  Undoubtedly, the need to prove himself prompted some of Gerber’s flare tonight, but it is very likely that the lack of pressure and the pride factor will result in more strong play down the stretch.  Here’s to hoping that we see a bit more of the Swiss cheese that we got so used to in an Ottawa uniform.

As always, interested to hear your thoughts.

Cheers,

Nik

John Mitchell’s reminding me A LOT of Nik Antropov with higher top speed and better face-off & defensive abilities. In the offensive zone, he’s got the same slick hands and vision, as well as the ability to run the boards with his big body. Mitchell’s picked up right where Moore left off and that’s very promising.

I wasn’t prepared for how stripped-down this roster would look without Antro and Moore. Add in Kaberle’s injury, and this might be the most talent-bare lineup in the NHL. Which is good, because right now we’re looking at the eighth overall pick, and that isn’t gonna cut it.

As a leaf fan, I still enjoy seeing them win regardless of the draft consequences come June. It was also nice to see Martin Gerber, who had been thrown under the bus for the passed few years in Ottawa, play a great game and seem to be enjoying himself out there. He seems like a legitimate good guy all around.

This is so damn frustrating. Just when we could have given the reigns to Cujo and Pogge to finish off the season and help us get that top 5 pick we need so desperately, no Burke goes and gets a vet that has something to prove, the guy is playing for another contract next year, and will play his hardest since this is his final shot at proving he can still play in the NHL.

    Thank you Burke, brilliant move!

What is wrong with all of you “fans”? It’s unbelievable to me that you want the Leafs to lose. I am a true fan, I live in Indiana now and I spare no expense when it comes to being able to watch “God’s Team” (center ice package/NHL Network). I want them to win every game, and I still get disappointed when they lose. Do you really think that Brian Burke and Ron Wilson want to lose??? These guys are some of the most competitive people in the NHL today. Do you really think the players want to lose??? The only people hoping for the Leafs to lose are the “non fans”, because that’s what you are.

Dont forget he has been scouting those kids in the NCAA… so lets see what else he pulls from his hat…. I think it was a very productive deadline for us……… and cant wait til draft day!!!!

Ok, holy shit, I knew Burke was trying to make this team competitive for the remainder of the season, but i think we got a goalie on the rebound and this will be a good confidence booster for the team, especially when you don’t have to worry about any inconsistencies. Its like they say, build from behind and the front will correct itself.

For one, I think Gerber was a good goalie, and thought he got screwed in Ottawa……and now he knows he’s the number 1 (for now), which is a great confidence builder.

Yeah seriously tater. I watched the Leafs now for well over 20 years myself and I am want to see this team build a good young team that will contend for a long time. I don’t think it makes me any less of a fan because I care about my teams future and would rather see them build for high prospects which have a higher success rate than winning games and getting 15-30th pick every year.

Watching Schenn this year had really got me excited for this coming draft getting another top 5 guy. Especially considering how deep the draft is this year, the best since 2003 probably, than why wouldn’t I want to get a top 5 pick, this is the year that really be huge for your rebuilding franchise.

I see no problems with wanting to lose now, and win for a long time later.

I don’t care if you want to the Leafs to win, I don’t and many leaf fans share this sentiment while other don’t.

But don’t tell me I’m not a real fan. We all want the leafs to win, and a cup eventually.

leafscrazy22- i dont know how to say this in a nice way so im just going to say it. you cannot call people idiots at the beginning of your post and expect nobody to be offended. you cannot yell at people on this website and expect people not to be offended. what you said is offensive. so if you really dont like it, then dont come on here. stay away and we idiots and non-leaf fans that dont know what we are talking about will enjoy having our opinions and our feelings and you can go do whatever it is that you do and continue being rude and offensive and expecting others not to be offended. the fact is that sometimes when your team loses you are actually winning in the long run. if you just stop, take a breath and think about it, you will understand. we all want the leafs to win, of course we cheer for our team, been doing it as far back as i can remember and never seen the stanley cup parade ever in toronto, but we need to rebuild and we need that high draft pick to build around. need quite a bit actually. no doubt burke and his boys can turn it around but it dont take away from the fact we need those good draft picks to build for the future. everyone is entitled to their opinion on this site and the guys that do the blogs are very very good, well-informed and are doing a fantastic job. as a leaf fan, i couldnt be more happy with the job these guys do. so as i said, if you dont like it, dont read it!

Actually, Leafscrazy22, what you fail to grasp is that we ALL want to see our team win. What we don’t like is when the winning happens when all is lost, and is actually hurting its future. This is what is happening now, and this is what happened in the past few years. To win a game you play good for 60+ minutes, and to win a season you play good in 82 games.
A big reason for this is that we lack top players in their respective positions, and if the Leaf scouting has proved anything is, that they rarely find good players in the lower drafting positions. Drafting high gives us better chances for the franchise-type players we need (Luke Schenn anyone?).

…and yes, I still can’t help but root for them every game, despite my opinions. I still cheer for every goal.

Another game winner for Kubina. He is really starting to show what he had in Tampa Bay when he won the Stanley Cup. He has 4 goals in 4 games and two of them were game winners. We’ve talked about what we can get for Kaberle, what do you think we can get for Kubina if we decide to move him in the off season?

I don’t know why people in general think that a top five pick is going to be a sure fire hit, I really don’t get it. Fans of any team in the NHL should go look at what the success rate of top 5 picks are in any year relative to their projection or placement by central scouting. I personally have been watching hockey long enough to remember “can’t miss”, “top five” prospects such as Doug Wickenheiser for chrissake! Scouting is critical for rounds 1 through 7 period. Colum-bust has failed to make the playoffs since they were awarded a franchise and have had plenty of “top picks” since then. In the end the data doesn’t lie. I may be mistaken but I seem to remember Owen Nolan, Mike Ricci, Petr Nedved and Kieth Primeau all taken ahead of the great Jaromir Jagr and that was considered a “can’t miss” top 5. Of the first 4 players mentioned I would say there have been a number of players since then who have had equal or better careers that were drafted in later rounds. For god sake just take a look at Detroit!? Top 5 is not money in the bank by any means nor is early 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.

It would be better to look at the most recent years of top 5 picks. Lets start from 2003 up to the 2006 draft of top 5 picks.

    2003

    1.Fleury
    2.Staal
    3.Horton
    4.Zherdev
    5.Vanek

All of these guys are either stars or pretty good.

    2004

    1.Ovechkin
    2.Malkin
    3.Barker
    4.Ladd
    5.Wheeler

Again. All Stars or good players

    2005

    1.Crosby
    2.Ryan
    3.Johnson
    4.Pouliot
    5.Price

4 of the top 5 are all pretty good.

    2006

    1.Johnson
    2.Staal
    3.Toews
    4.Backstrom
    5.Kessel

    All 5 great players.

Recently the top 5 is a sure bet. Research a little before you make false claims.

Wouldn’t a TRUE fan want the best for their team? win or lose? I remember when the Leafs used to make the playoffs and there’d be a game or two at the end of the season where I’d want them to lose so they wouldn’t be matched up against a team they didn’t play well against all season or possibly so they could play Ottawa and get an easy by in to the next round. Losing a game allowed the Leafs to face competition they could handle and get closer to the cup. A TRUE fan wants the Leafs to win the cup, not just post wins whenever possible. Right now the only way to the cup is to get a stock of young, good prospects. We have nothing to trade to get better players (without giving up our good players) and free agents don’t want to join a team that has missed the playoffs and hasn’t changed their strategy. Fans who don’t approve of the rebuild (which requires a high first rounder, which requires losing) are like kids that keep touching the stove and burning themselves.

@looshV the research in this article http://www.tsn.ca/columnists/scott_cullen/?id=267960
(and jes’s list above) tells a different story. Talent can be found anywhere in the draft but unlike later selections a top five pick is, in fact, “going to be a sure fire hit” 19 times out of 20 (http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/draft/index.html). More importantly this year’s draft is being called the deepest in years, even more so than the 2008 draft which is already paying dividends with four of the top five picks jumping right into the NHL. The opportunity to acquire a franchise player is very real.
@Mahler Burke is the one who said (paraphrasing here) “if you’re not on your way up the standings you need to be on your way down.” Some of us Leafs fans see accumulating losses as a way of ‘drawing back the slingshot.’ We need to step back and load up before we open fire and make the other teams cry like our little sister and then our mom yells at us and uh… nevermind.

    @jes

These are not false claims, you have taken a a small sample from the entire history of the draft and stated that we can therefore assume that all ensuing top 5 picks in the coming years are sure fire. And i beg to differ that because many of those players are having decent years just this year. For example:
    66 17 19 36 -5 31 2 1 2 130 13.1
Those are Jordan Staals numbers this year. If one was to look at these numbers without knowing the name and you were told this was a 2nd overall pick you would probably call that not extremely successful. Especially if he was on the Leafs. Or perhaps the fall from grace that Carey Price is experiencing would be an equally good example. Andrew raycroft won a Calder trophy don’t forget. Is Jack Johnson sure fire……or Eric Johnson for that matter? Bobby Ryan? Again first season, to say that those players are can’t miss is complete conjecture. Cam Barker,
    49 4 26 30 -4 49 4 0 1 64 6.3
for all his points he is still a -4.
    54 8 14 22 10 51 2 0 1 121 6.6
Those stats happen to belong to the one and only Ian White picked 191st overall in the 6th round. My point is only this: a team that finishes in low standing does not necessitate excellent picks. Scouting does period.

Thanks Ron Guillet! As he pointed out in the last few years scouts have been getting things right in the top five. Being there means a better chance of success, statistically speaking. I don’t get why satisfying a few indifferent lower seats means more to building a Stanley Cup contender!
