Grabovski– Should He Stay, Or Should He Go?

He should stay. Period.

Mikhail Grabovski is a pending Restricted Free Agent this summer. Brian Burke will have exclusive rights to discuss an extension with the Belorussian, but it remains to be seen if he wants to retain him. Decisions, decisions…

Many have tagged Grabovski as a head-case whose attitude is a detriment inside the locker room (well, that’s what Montreal Canadiens fans say anyway). To prove this, one may point to the two altercations that transpired between Grabovski and teammate Jason Blake this season. The most recent incident took place after Grabovski hit Blake from behind during a scrimmage. But hold on, Grabovski’s hair is not flaming red, and he’s not trying to send his teammates to eternal damnation (again, as Montreal Canadiens fans would say).

“I played just a little bit hard,” Grabovski said.”(Blake) is the best player on the team. The next time I will go a little bit slower. It’s OK. I’m young.” – Toronto Sun

After he said this, Grabovski was involved in a touching Hallmark Moment when he came up behind his teammate, gave him a hug and said, “See. Everything’s fine.”

So there you have it, Grabovski is not Sean Avery’s inbred son (hey, you never know what the media will cook up these days), and he does have a beating heart.

Pertaining to the blog, Grabovski should stay with the Leafs for one simple reason: Potential. Simply put, Grabovski’s got moves. His dangles have often made defenders look silly, and his speed through the neutral zone often helps him generate odd-man rushes. His 16 goals and 35 points is also encouraging, as he should finish somewhere between 40-45 points. Let’s be real, how much points were we actually expecting from Grabovski? Ron Wilson said it himself when the season debuted in October that Grabovski should score somewhere between 40-50 points.

In terms of the negatives, Grabovski lacks in the physical department. While he’s decent in his own end, you’ll rarely see him initiate an effective body check (ranked 13th on the team with 44 hits). He also tends to hold on to the puck too long at times, but that’ll come with experience. Let’s not forget that, while he’s 25, this is his first full season in the NHL. He needs time to adjust to the speed of the NHL, and learn how to make split-second decisions at both ends of the rink.

What made Grabovski such an offensive weapon in the RSL and the AHL was his ability to dangle his way through the opposition, using his vision and lightning-quick speed to set-up and finish plays. In the NHL, he’s not experienced enough (yet) to be hanging the opposition’s jock straps from the rafters, as defenders often shut him down.

Grabovski may be frustrating to watch now, but wait until he starts to truly adapt to the NHL game. His vision, speed, creativity, dangling and playmaking abilities will make him a solid second-liner for years to come.

Grabovski is a project that requires patience.

Potential to be: 20 goal, 60 point player (or more)

You stay classy, MLHS.

If Burke doesn’t resign Grabs… he needs his head examined. This guys is going to be a high quality player with allstar potential. He’s learning from Wilson. His defensive game has gotten very solid. Witness last nights game in overtime when he was the first man in the offensive zone on a 3-2 rush that turned into a 2-1 going the other way and it was Grabs who skated full speed from the opposition crease to break up the scoring chance.
    .
He’s just going to get better. You absolutely can’t let him go.
    .
If there’s a ongoing problem between Blake and Grabs it will be solved with the removal of Blake via throwa-away trade or waivers to the AHL. Simple as that. Blake is done in a few years and has very little trade value. Grabs has alot of value and heaps of potential.

    I’m with King.

What’s sad to me however, is that Toronto’s media tends to think like some of our uneducated fans. Why else would Burger even write about Grabo being moved?

I know Grabo has had his issues, but maybe Blake’s the problem. let’s not forget how Blake really didn’t see eye to eye with Paul Maurice and Sundin. He has a loud mouth and shouldn’t be making comments like this to the media about his teamate. I’m not defending Grabo’s actions, but I’m also pointing the finger to Blake’s reaction. He’s not a team guy.

    Great post King.
Grabovski hasn’t exactly played with top six forwards all year either. Hagman has been a solid linemate when healthy, but Kulemin is also a rookie playing on North American ice for the first time. Besides Grabovskis offence I think he has shown well in two other important aspects of the game. One is he does not back down. He is strong on his skates and doesn’t shy from the danger zones. If you put a power forward with this guy you might get 65-75 points next year. The other aspect of his game that has been fair is his defence. Despite what the media says the guy does back check in his own end. Let’s face it when he is on the ice the Leafs have looked more dangerous.

Aside from the Blake incidents, Grabs’ has other moments that would make you question his attitude. The Canadiens got rid of him for that very reason (does anyone actually believe there wasn’t roster space?), he pulled some stunt where he went home since he wasn’t being given enough playing time (when with the Canadiens), he goes and pushes a linesman, says some stupid, unprofessional stuff in the media about fighting the Kostitsyns in the streets, and then there’s also the documented incidents between him and Blake. Perhaps there’s more, too, that we are not aware of – sounds like Mayers got in the kids’ face right away and I would think Jamal would know when something was just a rookie mistake or isolated incident. I don’t care how good an individual player is, hockey is a team game and between those incidents and the way Grabs’ plays (ie. hanging on to the puck too long) I’m not sure I’d want a player like that on my team. While we’re at it I wouldn’t want Blake either.

I’d be interested in knowing what the average ice time was for those players we’re comparing Grabovski’s rookie stats to. I’m thinking some of them have probably done more with less ice time. Is he talented? Absolutely. But would I hate to see him go? No. I think Burke should try and trade him for a centre with size, skill, and who can actually win a faceoff. It’s not all about the points a player can put up – look at Schenn’s numbers – they suck – but no one would trade him.

Grabs is a nutbar. It’s obvious that he is distraught over his break-up with his boyfriend Kostitsyn and is lashing out in anger. This rebound fling with Jason Blake is not the right way to heal. He needs closure. Perhaps Dr. Phil can help? Or maybe Don Cherry can just whip it out and junk slap him till he’s normal again.

    Ron Wilson has integrity.
1200 or more coached games in the NHL
    550-something wins.
    Zero Stanley Cup rings.

you hold out on as long as you can on grabovski.
there is definatly interest with this guy and if the right team really wants him they will pay him the right price then its up to burke to match it or pass

we match it we get a speedy winger
we pass, we get picks and allows for one of our other younger prospects to show what they got

To me, its a no brainer, you keep him. Theres nothing to loose because we are still rebuilding nest year, and he will only need time and playing experience to see if hes a top 6 future player. If traded for picks we would prolly get a second at best, then be in the same situation, with a potentially good player in our system that needs time. I dont mind watching him play and his about 20 goal pace this year is pretty good to be honest when you look at the guys he plays with. I hope he plays more with Hagman next year and we should see abouut 25 goals next year, if so then you sign him to a decent contract

I like Grabs … but burkey just signed hanson and bozak. Hanson, a winger i persume, has a big frame and if he fills out more he could command down low as a grinder/power forward which is a plus but i dont see much upside in him. Watching the few games he played he looked like he lacked some awareness … but ill give hime the benefit of the doubt and say lack of expierence in the Chell would contribute to that. Bozak is intriguing. He has a welth of talent and can find the mesh but i feel always hesitent on players signed undrafted. I love story being a Regina native myself and having played against the kid, hes unreal. Ultimately what im getting to is what i see is a jam up in the center position on the team. Someone has to go i think it might be grabs. Nothing against him at all i think he a tremendous talent but i would way rather have a canadian boy like zaks who is younger, cheaper, than a euro dangler like grabs for a lot more. Just my opinion is all.
