Post-Game: Leafs/Panthers – Florida (?!) on Fire

A March meeting with a solid team in the playoff chase (yes, that’s actually Florida I’m talking about here) went pretty much as expected.  Signs of life from the Maple Leafs were quickly overwhelmed by the desperation and talent (surprise! again!) of this Panthers squad.  Sadly, this tussle lacked the fan factor that made Tuesday night’s game in Tampa a joy to watch.

Here are some notes from this Thursday night tilt:

-Ok, honestly, what the hell Florida? Your arena is half full, half again of which are fans of the road team.  One of your exceptionally brilliant fans feels that this hockey game is a suitable place to go crazy with their new car horn toy in what had to be one of the most annoying broadcasts in recent memory with respect to the auditory aspects.  It is safe to say that the incessant bleating-which prompted a zombielike uttering of “Let’s Go Panthers…” from the two people in attendance that weren’t asleep-got on all our nerves.  Couple that with the classy “meow-growl” that plays whenever a goal is scored…and I know I’m not the only one that was tempted to just watch this one muted.  Millen and Bowen giggling about the new group Crackberry didn’t help.

-Doug MacLean was spot on when he said Martin Gerber is not an ideal number one goalie. He was great tonight. Gerber was under siege for many portions of tonight’s matchup, but there are still a few too many glaring flaws in his game.  He has the talent to make great saves, and would do well under strong defensive teams (read: reason why he failed in Ottawa), but can hardly be relied on to steal too many for your squad.  That being said, he is definitely an efficient stopgap measure and by all accounts is a stand-up guy that will hopefully continue his strong career next season…elsewhere.

-Blake’s line had a good game in the offensive zone tonight.  This included Lee Stempniak, a topic of discussion in recent days here at MLHS with regards to his future with Toronto.  My thoughts on the matter are simple: we have the kid for another year, with roster and cap space to spare.  Give him free reign and see if he can do what he’s supposed to.  On that note, another player in the exact same category, Mikhail Grabovski, also had another great night.

-Following this theme of the future of some of our current roster players, where do we see Matt Stajan fitting in on Brian Burke‘s team?  Leaf fans have often slotted him into the second or third line center spot.  However, Burke has made it clear that his top six are to be rife with slick talent.  We can all agree that Stajan has his strengths on the PK and on draws, but in terms of talent is borderline with respect to what Burke is looking for.  On the flipside, his bottom six are going to be characterized by grit, size, and belligerence.  Once again, I think we can all agree that Matt falls right on the edge of this characterization. It is possible that he plays our third line center with the ability to move up to the second line spot in the case of injuries.  However, it is just as possible that the ambiguity of his skill set sees him heading out of town for a decent return with a more definitive player replacing him.

With Toronto’s season winding down, the focus turns increasingly to the offseason, the draft, and the future of this Maple Leafs team.  With this shift in attention comes a multitude of questions.  Who stays? Who goes?  And who will join us this summer?

As always, interested to hear your thoughts.

Cheers,

Nik

I guess after Schenn’s “mistake”, his ice-time was cut dramically! He finished the game with less than 15 minutes last night.

Here’s what I’d like to see on defense next year:

    Kaberle – Schenn
    Finger – Van Ryn
    Kubina – White

    Gilroy – Stralman
    Sifers – Vorobiev
    Oreskevoic – Frogren

A future pairing of Stralman and Schenn is really starting to look good!

Vorobiev? He has a heart problem and will most likely never going to see the inside of a hockey rink ever again.

@Roacho, Detroit picked up a very solid goalie prospect in the late first round last year in Thomas McCollum. However, you can never have too many good goalie prospects so who knows what they’ll do.

@ Dan, If we sign Gilroy he will be in the NHL. He’ll be in the NHL where ever he signs. He’s UFA and isn’t subject to normal rookie regulation. Part of the “recruiting process” will be the promise of an NHL spot, as well as big$$. He’ll likely get over $2mil and an NHL spot out of training camp. The fact that the Leafs have the $$, the cap space and could make room for him next year should make them the front-runner.

@Blue Max, Yes Vorobiev did test positive for a heart condition this year in the KHL, but apparently had a second test on his own which didn’t show any problems.

Move Stajan? Are you people serious?

We finally have some players that are close to PPG and we want to trade them?

And all this talk about Stajan not being skilled enough for top-6 and not gritty enough for bottom-6.. Thus making him not a BB type player.. This is getting out of hand. Brendan Morrison is a similar player. Burke had him in Vancouver and he signed him in Anaheim. Never had a problem with him now did he?

Stajan is a top-6 forward that can play in the bottom-6.. not the other way around.

    Blue Max,

No problem. I can’t find the article I saw it in though. He still isn’t cleared to play by the KHL though, but that test (if it in fact took place, and came back negative) might be a ray of light.

I did find this while a was looking for that article though. Apparently the Caps are interested in him. I don’t know how trustworthy the site is though.

I know Vorobiev failed the test the KHL gave every player, but he got a second test done and it came back negative, so it would seem to me like he’s healthy and ready to go. He stated he had a heart problem as a child, but it hasn’t gotten any worse and is nothing serious.

This could be a good thing for the Leafs, as he won’t be able to play in the KHL, therefore making it more likely that he’ll come to the NHL.
If it’s true the Capitals are interested in him would we have to trade him there or is he considered an UFA?

Vorobiev is the Leafs property, if the Caps want him they’ll have to trade for him.

That prospects list makes no sense. How is Schenn on the list and Stralman and Tlusty not?? Schenn has played about the same amout of games as either of them, but he’s still considered a prospect yet the other two who have similar amounts of games aren’t?? That’s weird. It can’t be because of age since Pogge and Vorobiev are both on the list and are both older than Tlusty and Stralman.

@ Burn it says at the end “Key losses to graduation: Jiri Tlusty, Anton Stralman. ” I imagine the reason is because they have played enough games to no longer be considered prospects. This would also explain why Pogge and Vorobiev, though older than these two, are still considered to be prospects.

True, I have no idea how they label players, but my point is simply that they’re not excluding Stralman and Tlusty; its just that by Hockey Future’s standards they are no longer considered ‘prospects’.

I find it interesting how the Leafs are ranked so high. The truth is a lot of our picks in recent years are turning into quality prospects and while ignorant people love to rip the Leafs for having zero talent in our prospect pool, our depth is starting to show. Hopefully after this season its even stronger and a few of those players develop into prized prospects.

Am I the only one who thinks the Leafs should hire back JFJ as a head scout or something? The guy did two things well as GM – Signed Kaberle to a great long term deal and drafted a lot of solid young guys.

I like what JFJ did with the scouting department. I don’t think he’s soley responsible for drafting, but what ever he did seems to have paid off. I think he’d make a good Asst GM or head scout or something. I don’t think he really had a chance here, I don’t think those above him allowed him to do his job properly.

I believe JFJ is a head scout for another team, is he not?

I think the Leafs have got a better prospect pool that in one to two years will really be strong but there’s still a lack of blue chip, sure fire prospects. This year’s draft should solve that.

JFJ? Really? Any man that, having watched McCabe in pressure situations, decided to give him 1.25 mil, a no-trade, and a no-movement more than he signed a world-class d-man like Kaberle, should not be near ANY hockey team.

    My opinion.

Didn’t McCabe have more goals though? Plus he was more physical and a better leader. Not to mention he wanted the money. Kaberle was just happy to stay where he was. I think if JFJ hadn’t given McCabe the no movement then the deal wouldn’t have been that bad – at the time.

What does his terrible contract/trade negotiation skills have to do with his scouting abilities? And if he was as big of a MLSE puppet as widely believed he may not have had a choice but to offer that to McCabe.

Ya true. JFJ is an idiot for a GM but he did a lot of things some people didn’t see like putting money into scouting and the Marlies….he would be a good pick for the leafs if they could get him back
