Leafs Close to Signing Notre Dame’s Christian Hanson

According to Darren Dreger, the Toronto Maple Leafs are closing in on a contract with Notre Dame senior Christian Hanson, son of the legendary Dave Hanson from the cult classic “Slapshot”. This move is just the beginning of what should be a very busy offseason for Brian Burke as he attemps to replenish the Maple Leaf farm system.

Christian is a 6’3, 202 lb forward who is described by one scout as a “a strong two-way forward who takes care of the defensive zone first, is a strong playmaker and knows how to play well away from the puck.” Now even though he carries the same name as his father, their playing styles are completely different. Here’s a telling quote from his dad: “My game was built off my physical play,” Dave Hanson said. “His is built off his ability to play the game.” What’s interesting to note is that while his dad gained fame and fortune from his role as a enforcer for many years, Christian the won the award for most “Gentlemanly Player” when he played for the Lincoln Storm in the USHL.

This is more a move to add character and depth to the organization than it is to solidify and upgrade the team’s core. Hanson should provide the Marlies with some quality minutes and some promotional possibilities. The Leafs hope that with his work ethic and hockey bloodlines that he may one day crack the Leafs’ lineup as a 4th line forward.

The most interesting thing to consider about this signing is not the actual signing itself, but rather the implications. By my count, the Leafs have now accumulated 49 professional contracts, leaving them 1 under the maximum number of 50 (unless of course they’ve signed Hanson to a try-out contract instead, with the promise of a pro contract come July 1st, which is what I would do). This means that if Leaf prospects Chad Rau and Viktor Stalberg, and prized defenseman BU Matt Gilroy were to join Denver forward Tyler Bozak in the free agent pool before the Leafs season is over (meaning their respective college teams get eliminated), then the Leafs would only have 1 professional contract left to throw at them. That would certainly shed some light onto why Burke was quoted in the Globe and Mail this morning as saying that the Leafs were still waiting to make a decision on whether or not to offer a contract to Chad Rau. The Leafs are also expected to make a contract offer to Hobey Baker finalist Viktor Stalberg, so this certainly complicates matters a great deal. What does this all mean? It means that if the Leafs want to sign Matt Gilroy, they better put on their BU sweaters and cheer for the Terriers to have a long playoff run.

Always a pleasure,

Alex Tran

On TSN, Hanson was listed as 6’4 and 225 pounds? Why big of a difference?

I just grabbed Hanson’s NCAA stats. Those probably haven’t been updated in a while, so TSN is probably the more accurate one.

He’s not a tough guy. He won an award for Gentlemanly play in his last year in the USHL. He’s big and plays strong on the puck, but don’t expect him to be in the box a lot like his dad.

Stalberg is probably going to opt for spending one more year at Vermont, out of loyalty to the orginization for giving him a shot and because his little brother is likely going to be a rookie there next season. Rau we can wait to sign post-draft after dumping a contract or two, and I think our CHL players on pro contracts (Didomenico, Mitchell) don’t count towards the limit. So that leaves us in pretty good position with three open spots. But if I’m wrong it shows the kind of horrible, short-sighted planning I thought this team had moved past. Did we blow a chance at one of Gilroy or Bozack by signing Jay Harrison? Ugh.
    Also: “owns, ooowns.”

Betterforsome, the number 49 already doesn’t include Dido and Mitchell.

Sounds like a big kid. I know you said he wasn’t like his dad, but please tell me he at least finishes his checks and can use that frame to his advantage.

actually it may be closer to 16, does Derrik Walser still play for the Marlies? I don’t think so. There are a few ex-Marlies that show up on the payroll but their contracts are clearly now in the possession of other teams.

Bozak to make a decision tomorrow:

“He said it’s been narrowed down to a “short list,” and added that “the Colorado Avs are still an option.”

“I’m very excited,” Bozak told the Clarion Monday night. “It’s been my dream my whole (life) to play professional hockey so this is an exciting time for me.”

Bozak left for Toronto shortly after DU’s loss to Miami (Ohio) to meet with his family adviser.

“We’re trying to figure out a good fit for me for a certain NHL team to sign with,” he said, adding that he will likely make a decision by Wednesday.”

Burke did say that he intends on signing 4-5 college players hoping 1-2 pan out as effective players….

Time for BB to make his mark…..Hanson seems like a good start…big strong kid with talent…

Let’s hope Wilson with Hanson what he has done with a few of the other young leafs.

@betterforsome: Rua would need to be signed before June 1 to remain Leafs property, otherwise he becomes a UFA.

Hopefully this is an ATO contract with a verbal agreement for a pro contract after July 1, because if the Leafs had any shot at getting both Bozak + Gilroy, it will have gone out the window.

nhlnumbers.com – for all contracts. This is the most accurate source I”ve found. You guys probably know all about it.

Alex – good piece. Good eye noticing the contracts are running out.

Keep in mind Harrison is only signed until seasons end. Burke will be busy sorting through contracts July 1, 2009 – just the way he likes it!

If he’s mouldable, he could maybe use his size to be an effective energy line player. At worst he ends up being a good AHL player and the Leafs lose nothing giving this guy a shot. I hope BB get sign a couple more, you really never know. From what I hear very few have emerged to becoming NHL stars from the ncaa, but Cujo and Adam Oates are the big names to make it. Lets not forget in the general picture many undrafted players have gone on to be excellent NHLers, such as Martin St Louis…. In the end this is a no risk move that can only benefit the organization.

From what I know its 50 NHL contracts, for example Munro doesn’t have a NHL contract but can still play with the Marlies but not the Leafs. Right?

Yah this is a great signing for the Leafs. Even if it means there is a little extra competition in training camp next year that is just fine with me. The Leafs have a lot going for them with opportunity and money. I’d see this guy being a 3rd or 4th line agitator, adding some needed grit and size to the Leafs.
