Post-Game: Leafs/Flyers – Ghastly Goaltending

13 goals, 3 tenders, countless defensive errors and ugly goals.  You almost felt sorry for Curtis Joseph after Jeff Carter cruised in for an easy breakaway goal and the camera panned to a thoroughly annoyed Ron Wilson.  The Leafs would attempt a comeback of sorts after going down by six goals, but even with the best efforts of Martin Biron, it all went for naught.

Here are some notes from this Friday night fright:

-Chris Hanson made his NHL debut tonight, accompanied by more media Slapshot references than you would have thought possible.  True to his modus operandi, Ron Wilson gave the kid full leash, letting him strut his stuff for over seventeen minutes.  Hanson looked tentative out there at first, especially in the offensive zone.  He seemed to know his way around his own end of the ice though, even throwing in a blocked shot.  Hanson got more comfortable as the game went on, and was involved in some crease battles on a Leafs powerplay later in the game.  Couple this with the recent signing of Tyler Bozak and you have to give Brian Burke credit for doing whatever he can to ensure fresh blood is brought into this organization through any means possible.  To say this is a refreshing sign of life from Leafs management is a massive understatement.

-You had to know that after getting trounced by the supposedly beatable Leafs on Wednesday that the Flyers would be itching for some payback on this Friday redo.  Couple that with strong words from Holmgren and you had to be prompted to utter a few prayers for Martin Gerber’s sake.  Philadelphia put on a clinic in the first period of the dominance you can achieve with the right combination of size, skill, and grit.  They harassed the Toronto players and came out on top of puck battles in the corner.  This was coupled with some pretty passing and slick shots.  Aided in part by no notable presence in the Leafs’ net.

-Ironically, Philadelphia followed this up with two periods of the shaky hockey you can expect if you have size, skill and grit backed up by absolutely horrible goaltending.  Midget-level defensive play was in abundance as Toronto outscored the Flyers 5-3 over the final two frames.  Claude Giroux was also the perfect exemplar of skilled offensive rookies that have yet to properly learn the defensive side of the NHL game, as he was on the ice for four goals against.

As was mentioned after Wednesday’s game, Philadelphia is a solid example of the NHL rebuild.  Leaf fans should cross their fingers and hope that we look something like this in the near future.  Yes, bad games included.  Those head-shakers are symptomatic of a still-young team that is learning what it takes to play a complete game in this league.  Soon enough, Claude Giroux will not be making those defensive gaffes.  Jeff Carter will continue to shine offensively.  Mike Richards will be a dominant two-way player.  We can only hope that we will soon say similar things about young studs wearing the blue-and-white.

As always, interested to hear your thoughts.

Cheers,

Nik

    Thanks for the review Nik.

    6 – 0 after 1 and a half?

    Yikes.

    Philly got their revenge.

    Nik, nice post-game, and FAST!
When the Leafs made it 6-3 towards the end of the second, I said to myself, “Self, next goal wins.” Unfortunately, Philly scored the next goal, at the end of a power play as I recall. Was the the one from the side, the one I could have stopped with both eyes tied behind my back? Not sure. All those goals tended to blur.
I’ve been increasingly impressed with the play of Kulemin. He’s getting stronger in every facet of the game. And I have to say Schenn’s starting to resemble, at times, a PP QB.
The other positive to take from this game is the never-say-die attitude…again. We’ve seen this time and time again from the team this year, but this had to take the cake: down and out 6-0, they scored three goals in three minutes and looked for all the world like they were itching to score some more. This is the way winning teams play when they’re losing. The *good* winning teams play this way no matter the score…and I think you’ll see that next year.
Hanson…he didn’t look completely lost out there, but he didn’t do too much to stand out either. He did show some decent speed, almost managing to chase down an icing in the third. I’m intrigued enough to hope he gets a longer look.
Goaltending…*sigh* I’m not sure *any* of our goalies are NHL-capable. I do hope Burke improves this area, and soon…

Horribly subpar goaltending at both ends. I cringed as a member of the goalie fraternity at those performances. Just awful!!

Philly better be worried going into the playoffs like that.

I vote for Nik doing all post games….. :)
    .
I wasn’t impressed with Hanson tonight (probably unfairly). He looked like skating was going to be a problem (one that he can work on). He kind of reminded me of Deveaux without the toughness.
    .
The Bozak signing was something else though. Finding out he was signed to a salary equivalent to a top 5 first round pick. Potential to make 4m next year. Especially on a Leaf team bereft of top 6 forwards. That’s exciting.
    .
Liked Wilson’s post game comment… it’s easy to score 5 when you are already down 6 zip and the other team is coasting.
    .
    Cheers

Glad I fell asleep after this one was two-nothing. Humiliating, especially for a class guy like Cujo. On the plus side Schenn Grabovski and Kulemin all put up points tonight, and the loss leaves us just one point up on Ottawa and a handful more on suddenly red-hot Atlanta and Phoenix. I am kinda worried that an embarrassement like this could impact our chances of signing more College kids, but that’s probably irrational. Everyone knows this year’s a wash and the changes are already underway.

I really like the look of Kulemin for next year. He has the makings of being a 25-30 goal scorer next year as he matures and adapts to the pace of the NHL. And as long he does not go into a sophmore slump.

To add to the last poster, the loss last night was huge because had the Leafs won, they would have realistically eliminated their chance to drop all the way to fourth-last in the league by the time the season ends. Ottawa is still one point back of the Leafs and Phoenix is 2 points back. Couple with Atlanta 3 points back and LA is 4 points back. LA plays Phoenix tonight. This game is a win-win for the Leafs.

As long as Toronto loses to the Habs tonight, if Phoenix wins, they push Toronto from 8th to 7th (If Ottawa wins tonight or loses in a shootout or in overtime, they would additionally push Toronto to 6th). If LA wins tonight, they pull 2 points behind Toronto.
Remember, LA, like Phoenix and Ottawa, only needs to TIE Toronto in the standings in order to pass Toronto because they all would have more wins than Toronto. Hopefully Atlanta continues the charge because all they need to do is win one game and then can pick up another point via overtime or shootout loss in order to pass Toronto.

    - Come on Habs, blow out Toronto like Philly did last night!

    - Hopefully Brodeur puts on a clinic against T.O. next Tuesday.

    - Hopefully Buffalo will still be in the playoff race when they face T.O. on Wednesday.

    - BIG game is next Saturday against Sens. Either team could get a better draft position if they lose. Wonder how both teams will be dressing their lineups.

Why would you want them to blow us out? That is stupid. Hope for a 3-2 win for the Habs or something in regulation with plenty of scraps.

Nice effort last night by Schenn. He knew his team needed a momentum change at the end of the first and tried to tussle – although nothing ever really came of that fight so Mayers took a second shot at it. He also tried to be more offensive and it paid off with a two point night. I’m still confused as to why Wilson isn’t giving Schenn some powerplay time, but at least Hanson got to get out there – he has good speed for a guy with size.

    @ hockey_guru

I see your point but based on the way the Leafs have played the last two months, if you were a Habs fan, would you feel safe with a 3-2 lead going into the third period? Leafs almost made that Philly blowout a game last night.

Look at the Bruins game last Saturday, Boston had to score 7 goals just to beat Toronto.

Couple Saturdays ago, Calgary scored six goals against Toronto and still lost 8-6.

Toronto has no pressure on them and are playing like world beaters. Habs need to strike and early and bury Toronto before Toronto gains momentum.

Remember that game in Tampa Bay a ew weeks ago when Toronto was down 3-0, only to come back and win in a shootout 4-3? Toronto is the king of comebacks and killing their draft position.

I am not asking the Leafs to tank. I am asking their oppoents to step up and win these remaining games against Toronto.

    @ Daniel Marois

I don’t care how good the consequences may be in terms of the draft, I don’t care about the whole slate of arguments that are put forward about how impossible the rebuild is without a top-5 pick, or anything else that might be said about the importance of losing games: when you state “Come on Habs, blow out Toronto . . .!” you lose a little bit of your identity and respect as a Leafs fan. Under NO circumstances whatsoever should those words be uttered. Particularly heinous for a Hockey Night in Canada matchup.

“Come on Habs, blow out Toronto…” (Daniel Marois), how dare you come on MLHS and utter those sacrilegious twat of words. You have pushed your faction to another level on the spineless ladder.

    @ Daniel

Yes, as I mentioned, I’m quite aware of all the arguments. I understand the points. And I am indeed rather hoping for an exciting, promising draft pick. I’m also very aware that ultimately wins now could end up dropping the Leafs down the draft ladder. However – and this is the completely unsolvable, paradoxical nature of being a Leafs fan at the moment – I also simply cannot cheer for the Canadiens against the Leafs, and for all the good reasons for wanting the Leafs to lose, I just can’t root for them to do so, and I won’t. It’s really just that simple for me – not a question of ignorance, but more of instinct.

On the plus side, it’s much easier to swallow if they lose, knowing that this will probably help them out later. All in all, despite missing the playoffs, it’s not a bad time to be a Leafs fan – it’s been far less stressful of late!
