Maple Leafs at #23 in HF’s Organizational Rankings

Hockey’s Future, the renowned hockey prospects website, announced their Spring Organizational Rankings today and the Toronto Maple Leafs found themselves in the bottom tier of the league at #23. The ranking is based on an assessment of a team’s farm system, which takes into account the amount of star power and depth that is likely to be produced. For a team in “rebuilding” mode, that’s not a flattering number to see.

The first thing to consider when looking at these rankings is that Hockey’s Future has very specific criteria for determining whether or not a certain player qualifies as a “prospect”:

A player will be considered a prospect until he meets the following criteria:

  1. If a prospect is a skater (forward, defenseman) and has played in 65 NHL games or more before the completion of the season of his 24th birthday; or, if a goaltender has played in 45 NHL games before the completion of the season of his 24th birthday, that player will be considered graduated to the NHL. Conversely, if a player completes the season of his 24th birthday without passing those milestones, then that player will no longer be considered a prospect by Hockey’s Future, regardless of the player’s status with his NHL club.
  2. An NCAA player who signs his first contract at or above the age of 22 has three years to meet the above criteria (65/45), while those NCAA players that turn pro under the age of 22 will be subjected to the criteria above.
  3. European players who sign their first NHL contract at or above the age of 22 have three seasons from the time they sign that contract to meet the above criteria. Those European players below the age of 22 that have signed a NHL contract will be subjected to the criteria in section one.

Essentially, it means that in the context of HF’s rankings, 5 of Toronto’s top 6 or 7  young players, Luke Schenn, Jiri Tlusty, Mikhail Grabovski, Anton Stralman, and Nikolai Kulemin are no longer considered prospects. Take out those 5 and you can see immediately how much of a blow it would be to a team’s prospect core.

The article commends the Leafs on several potential top six forwards in the system, including Boston College winger Jimmy Hayes, University of Denver Star Tyler Bozak, and Quebec sniper Mikhail Stefanovich. Aside from that, players such as Didomenico, Champagne, Hanson, and Stalberg figure to provide some much needed tenacity and sandpaper. I find it a little strange though that Bozak is listed as Toronto’s 18th best prospect, behind household names such as Ben Winnett, Matt Frattin, and Korbinian Holzer.

After that, it gets pretty ugly. The Leafs very little depth beyond Stralman and Schenn on the blueline. Although Toronto’s #2 ranked prospect Dmitri Vorobiev is plenty talented, there remains plenty of questions regarding whether or not he’ll ever come over to play in North America. After a scare late last season with a potentially career-ending heart condition, Vorobiev has recently been cleared to play once again, but has chosen to sign a two-year deal to remain in Russia with the Dynamo Moscow hockey club. Aside from Vorobiev, it’s a reach to say that there’s any other Toronto prospect with legitimate top 4-6 potential at the NHL level. Addressing this need at this year’s draft with at least 1 defenseman in the top 2 rounds, and perhaps another in the mid-late rounds is a must.

As for the goalie situation, there are a whole lot more questions than answers right now, which explains why Burke is still in the process of negotiating with Swedish free agent Jonas Gustavsson, as a means of a long-term solution between the pipes. The enigmatic Justin Pogge has struggled to find any sort of consistency over the past few seasons at the professional level, after showing so much promise on the junior stage. Pogge is an upcoming restricted free agent and I’m assuming that at the age of 23 there is still too much potential to pass on, but it’s possible that if Burke can get Gustavsson under contract, he may just cut bait and go with James Reimer full-time on the Toronto Marlies. Like Pogge, Reimer offers intriguing ability and size, but due to having played behind terrible teams his entire career, it’s still very tough to evaluate what exactly you may have on your hands. With no depth at the junior level or overseas, it’s time for the Leafs to nab another quality goaltending prospect this June. Names such as Olivier Roy, Matthew Hackett, Mike Lee, and Edward Pasquale should all figure very prominently in the discussion for one of Toronto’s two 2nd round picks.

The collection of young talent at the NHL level is starting to look promising, but the Leafs still have a lot of work to do to replenish the system and make up for many years of trading away draft picks. Moving a veteran or two at the NHL Draft may allow for the Leafs to stockpile multiple picks and either move up from the seventh spot, or address the lack of depth.

Always a pleasure,

Alex Tran

where did the leafs get thier second 2nd round pick from (one from the buffalo trade which is carolina’s 2nd rounder), didn’t they trade their second for this year last year to move up with the islanders?

They traded their own 2nd round pick to the Islanders, but at this year’s deadline they traded Antropov to the Rangers for the Rangers’ 2nd and Moore to the Sabres for the Canes’ 2nd.

I dont think we should worry about this 23 ranking. We did trade alot of our picks the last decade and its hurting us bad. But we are obviously in the right direction and are improving our prospects more and more each day, and should be between 10-15 this time next year if all goes well

I gotta be honest – and maybe I am one of those overly optimistic Leafs fans – but considering the flack the Leafs have taken regarding their farm system, 23rd doesn’t seem so bad, especially considering the likes of Schenn, Grabovski, Kulemin, et. al not being counted towards this ranking. With Hanson, Bozak and potentially Gustavson in addition to the new draftees this year, that number should rise pretty quickly while also improving the big clubs performance.

“Have you guys realized that youth is the name of the game now.”
    .
although youth is more more important now than before the lockout, the key is still, balance. Look at Detroit. Their players are at an age where they’re experienced enough to execute team plans flawlessly, yet young enough to push a little more physically when the situation calls for it.

I don’t think we are lighting it up with regards to prospects in the system but I think we have the chips to play with and 3 picks in the first two rounds this year. BB already has us heading in the right direction and I think by the end of next years draft he will have us in the top 10 on this list.

I am excited this year to see what Tlusty has. Did the year with the Marlies do what we all hoped it would? Could have a 30 goal man on our hands if he is put in the right situation.

Well…..Off topic a bit, but Im bored as fuck at work today and since im excited about the draft less then a month away, Im just dreaming here of possible draft day magic lol

What would YOUR favourite “within reason” draft day look like for the leafs? I know its a slim to none chance, but still possible, so heres mine (unless we move up to draft Tavares, which IMO is what would be best):

    -Keep our 7th
-See if we could grab the 5th spot from L.A. because they are then next most likely to be willing to part with it
-Try for one more mid to late round pick, 15-20 if possible

    1. NYI – Tavares
    2. TB -Hedman
    3. COL – Duchene
    4. ATL – MSP
    5. TOR – Cowen
    6. PHO-Kane
    7. TOR- Schenn

then with the late 1st rounder, I have seen that Glennie has dropped all the way to 23rd on some rankings, I think we try for him, unless someone like Kassain, Schroeder, Kardi, OEL, Kulikov are still there but I doubt it very uch they will be.

Getting the 5th from L.A. would be hard for sure and I dont know if we have what they are looking for. It would most likely take at least Kaberle and something else but with Cowen comming in we could afford to lose the defence in Kaberle.

Heres to a dream though lol….

I would also but PHO is %100 looking for the top defence in the draft. I also think Cowen is top 5 too so its alot safer to pick Cowen and leave Kane. PHO would not take Schenn before Kane so he would slip to 7th

I don’t think it’s a surprise that the Leafs rank this low. I mean with the youth movement, we’ve seen young player take on a role in th nhl club. That being said that’s the reason why many of them don’t qualify as a prospect even though to our eyes Schenn is still a prospect.
    ~
I’m not delusional on this matter by any stretch, but the ranking is not telling of where the team is at. I will reserve judgement on the core of prospects the Leafs amass after this year’s draft. It’s easy to rip this team a part, but under Fletcher’s watch this team has improved, now hopefully Burke will add some strength to the farm.

What makes you think that “draf day magic” is looking less likely by the day?

The playoffs havnt even ended yet, talks wont heat up until the week leading upto the draft.

And if history tell us anything, most of the moves happen on actual draft day

Toronto does not have anything LA would want to part with that #5 pick. They would not want Kaberle as they are deep on the blueline. They want a front-line pffensive player. Only player Toronto could dangle is Grabovski but they need to sign him to a new contract first as no way any team willl trade for a unsigned RFA.

Although I think it is much more realistic to get the #4 from Atlanta or the #6 from Phoniex as both teams need a #1-puck moving defenceman.

My opinion is Burke will try to be in a position to draft two players in the top-10 and use them to both the top-defenceman available and the top-forward available.

My fear is that he will have to sacrifice those 2 second round picks which might be a mistake as there will be some excellent prospects available in that second round.

Ya thats what Im worried about because theres not much here that L.A. would want. I dont think Atlanta will part with their pick either so maybe PHO would but I dont know if thats possible as well. I TOTALLY agree with you when you say we need to get 2 top 10s and get the best forwad and best defence avalable. Cowen/Schenn would be great

Just another side note, Patrick Roy is not joining the Colorado Avalanche, (As per TSN) so all those comments that Jonas Gustavsson wanting to play for his idol in Colorado can go by the waste side. I think Burke showing compassion for Gustavsson’s situation will play well in Toronto’s favour.

As for grabbing a Cowen/Schenn combo in the top-10, that is the plan. It’s up to Burke to make it happen. I have been reading lately about the push for MSP and I do like the skill he would offer the Leafs.

But I think Burke wants to get the best forward available by trading up and he has Tavares or Duchene in his sights. Unfortunately, that would cost the Leafs their #7 pick and thus only have one pick in the first round.

That is why people are wrestling with what scenerio is better for the Leafs, be it getting Tavares/Duchene and sticking with one pick in the first round or keeping the #7 pick and trying to acquire a later first round pick or an additional second round pick.

I think MSP will be a great player, and is highly skilled but I would much rather build our top 3 guys around N.A. guys. I have seen too many cases of either no passion, KHL comming into play, not enough grit, dissapearing in the playoffs. I wouldnt risk it, thats why Schenn/Cowen would be top priorities to me if Tavares/Duchene were out of the picture. Imagine a core of Cowen/B. Schenn/L.Schenn….then you add in Grabovski, Kulemin, Tlusty or whoever and you have a great core. If B. Schenn plays like Richards like the scouts say he is, he would be my dream number 1 center. Build around him with talent but hes the identity I would want our team to have. A top pairing of Cowen/Schenn would be stupid awesome, something I would make in my dynasty NHL09 lol.
But none of this is as important as getting either Duchene of Tavares to build around. It might take a few too many picks or players but it would pay off in the end. This is our second year in a row at picking near the top, and it might be our last. Go for broke now and make this draft as much a success as possible and hope that we dont end up in the bottom half again. The oportunity is here now so we should take it

    @ Jordan

On the one hand, I agree with you going for broke because they are is no gaurantee that the Leafs will draft in the top-10 next year. MSP is apparently signed to play in Sweden for the 2009-2010 season and that may cause him to fall to the Leafs.

If Leafs got MSP and he does not play in Toronto, you would not be adding a impactful player for this year and thus the team could go the same course as this past season and again might be in a position to draft in the top-5 next year. That is why I would not frown on taking MSP at #7.

I think if you are moving up into the top-3 of the draft, you might have to give up a prospect like Grabo, Tlusty or Kulemin or perhaps a Mitchell or Stalberg. That’s when you have to ask your scouting staff to be as sure as can be that Tavares or Duchene will turn out to be franchise players and giving up a prospect or two to do it would be worth it in the end.

    Would you do it?

I think once Burke interviews MSP this week, he will have a better idea whether to trade up to get him because I don’t think he will be available at #7.

But remember, every NHL team has a different draft order for the top-10 or the first round for that matter. That means guys like MSP or Schenn could be ranked at #7 versus in the top-5.

Man, I am getting so excited for the draft. I think I am going to take the day off so I can soak it all in:)
