Dale and Dido – Budding Buds

Two contrasts in Leafs prospects from the Memorial Cup with Chris Didomenico breaking his left femur, and the continued development of Dale Mitchell.

It’s truly amazing that aside from a six-game stretch in February 2008, “Dido” never went more than two games without a point (regular season and playoffs) in his entire Junior career with the Saint John Sea Dogs and Drummondville Voltigeurs.

The fine Alex Tran covered the injury to “Dido” that caused him to miss the Memorial Cup. Hovering with crutches in the shadows, his jersey hung behind the bench.

Across the way, Dale Mitchell the Maple Leafs 3rd round pick in 2007 (74th overall) came into his own as the tournament progressed, ended up tied for the tournament lead in goals (5), and lucky number seven overall (6-5-1-6), including a dramatic natural hat trick in a 6-4 win over Rimouski, scoring in a mere 3:37 span in the third period with a slick wrister, tenacity and perserverence banging in rebounds.

Add a beauty wrist shot from the faceoff circle in the Championship game and the will to put it away late in the third with a breakaway effort after beating Tyson Barrie to a loose puck, shooting it wide but drawing a penalty.

I’m not often a fan of smaller players, but the motor on this kid never quits, and he’s developing into an effective, useful forward, very similar to the effort and work ethic displayed by Carolina’s Chad LaRose – a growing favorite – only Mitchell has a slightly better scoring touch.

He falls in that gap with glimpses of top-six skills, a healthy and ferocious checking ability, with a developing sense of defensive awareness. A little small-ish to be playing against bigger opponents on a consistent basis … but that engine … there’s no quit to the 5-foot-9, 200-pound winger.

Brian Burke touched on his lower roster philosophy in regards to player’s attributes his many interviews since taking the reigns, with a recurring element that a checking forward isn’t just a player with an engine and good checking ability with lead hands. Lower roster players also have a scoring touch, but their role is primarily that of shutting down the competition.

Mitchell: Check and check.

John Mitchell cut his teeth this season, developing into a fine third line center with some scoring touch and a good engine himself. The unrelated namesake from Windsor could make that third line sound more like a law firm rather than a checking unit.

Mitchell, Mitchell and (fill in the blank). Specializing in body checks, and then representing you getting the number of the truck that hit you.

The front line talent is about to come to fruition through the course of what should be an interesting off season (or two). Having a supporting cast of players that are able to shut down the opposition’s top lines is just as important. it wouldn’t surprise to see Dale get a chance at some NHL experience the upcoming season.

Nice blog Gus. I think that we have a very good supply of current and up and coming depth players in the forward position. A bit more prospect depth in the D, about three goalies, and six top forwards should just about do it.

    Hi Gus,
Again it bodes well that we have lots of prospects to fill the third and fourth lines but the top lines is where it is glaring.
We’ll see how Dido progresses from his injury but surely Stalberg and Bozak need to fill those top 2 lines in order to take the pressure off the decision to rush their 2009 first round pick (presumably a forward) into the lineup next season.

I think in light of Zezel’s passing, it would be great to honour him with a homegrown 3rd line, be it (Mitchell-Mitchell-?) that embodies the same qualitities that the Osboune-Zezel-Berg line gave the Leafs during the 1992-93 and 1993-94 seasons.
Toronto has lacked the identity of a shut-down line in the last couple years (Dominic Moore seemed to fill that role well) and pairing a 3rd line with say a Schenn-Cowen combo on the backend would instantly give the Leafs a chance to win on most nights.

I dont like the idea of Moen to be honest. I think he is a bit overrated seeing how EVERY year he has been in the minus in (+/-). He has been a minus player right through AHL, WHL, and has never had a (+) season in the NHL to date. Didnt we just rip Jeremy Williams for that?

I was going to suggest Moen for the fact that it does sound like an awesome law firm line.

We definitely need somebody who will battle, win faceoffs when needed and more importantly run anybody through the boards that dares carry the puck for too long.

@Daniel Marois – Don’t think of them strictly as prospects, but rather as assets. Too many fans are expecting miracles from the Leafs, especially with up front talent, but considering some positive moves going forward by Burke thus far, the future is brighter than any time over the last three seasons. I concede the deficiency in top-six talent, but that is something that the management team will have to assess, as well as what the marketplace could bear. Guys like Mitchell are just as important to the Leafs as Darren Helm, another defensive forward with some scoring touch, is to the Red Wings.

Don’t worry about the lack of top-six talent, that will come. Instead, look at the positives that are vital pieces to the puzzle and the rest will fall into place.

Too many fans re looking at last season without realizing the look of the Budz going forward may not be anything close to what was iced in 2008-09 at contention time.

I think the future is pretty bright, simply because its a clean slate for the GM, in a fun, entertaining style implemented by Ron Wilson, that should only get better as better talent is infused into the lineup.

    Well said Gus

Like many, we just want to finally see this team draft a superstar that it can call our own. Gilmour and Sundin were both players we had to trade for and give up a huge part of the roster for (well, in Gilmour’s case it was more quantity than quality).

When you read about players like Duchene, it is hard to watch the Leafs using another high pick to draft a ‘defensive defenceman’ like Cowen, despite the positive impact he would no doubt bring the Leafs.

You only get only a few shots to draft a franchise player in the top-10. Burke has acknowledged you have to be lucky to draft a franchise player outside the first round.

So while drafting players like Dido and Mitchell is great in the later rounds, we can’t just depend on free agency to upgrade this team. In a salary cap world, having drafted players filling top minutes for your team is vital. It’s hard to compete when those roles are being filled by the likes of Newbery, Ondrus and Deveuax.

I am confident Burke can build a good team in the draft, it’s just unfortunate that as much as he intends to move up in the draft, he should have dismissed his desire to fight for the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference and steered the team to a better draft position. Bringing in Gerber for one was a huge mistake as he did win too many games for the Leafs and the Cujo/Pogge tandam would have landed them somewhere in the #2-4 position in the draft.

No I am not talking tanking, its more like manipulating your roster so that moving up the standings would have been more difficult, and yes the prospect cupboard is getting back to a respectable place, but without elite forwards, defencemen and yes goaltenders will only keep the franchise on the outside looking in.

    @ Gus
Excellent article and incites in your comments.
If Chris Didomenico gets 100% healthy I expect that he and Dale Mitchell could be 2/3′s of a very good 3rd line for 2010/2011 forward. I am not saying that Didomenico should never play the powerplay but I think he makes a very good third line centre prospect because he plays so good in all three zones and is one of the best face off men up and coming. Mitchell just looks like a perfect third line forward. First and foremost both players have tremendous heart and both do the little things right.
I would have to say that Dido and Mithchell are the most interesting prospects we have. It will be interesting to see how Stephanovich plays at the next level. I though Oreskevic looked very good as a number 6 D-man. I have not seen much of Bozak or Stalberg but will be curious to see what they can bring given the chance. Where do you think they will play? And what about Tlusty and Kulemin next year- Where do you see them in the line up.
We need to be patient one more year and see where things stand. Maybe we get Taylor Hall!!

    @B Leaf

I’m not sold on Oreskovic .. he simply doesn’t have the skating ability to be an active part of the Leafs blueline. Despite a reasonably decent showing in a debut, the issue is whether he would be a viable defenseman at the time when the Leafs are contenders. I’m not convinced he’s the guy for that situation.

I’ve never seen Bozak or Stallberg play, but from what I’ve been able to find out, he’s a speedy forward, balanced on his skates (though needs to upgrade his physical game) with good offensive instincts, and quick hands. He’s got top-six skills and could become a gem. Bozak plays on the Leafs next season, as does Jiri Tlusty who’s proven he belongs in the NHL going forward. Although Kulemin seemed to be mediocre in stats, getting used to the NHL and North American lifestyle takes time. I bet he hits 20 goals next season.

The Leafs seem to have quite the log jam of “NHL possibles
with Bozak, Hanson, Mitchell, Mitchell, Tlusty, Stapelton, Straleman,Dido, Oreskovic et all it is impossible to fit most of them into the Leaf line up (baring injuries) especially with all the established NHL players they have (Grabbo and Kulemin being all but locks). I fully expect Mitchell and Dido (should he recover quickly) to spend next year with the Marlies

I loved watching Mitchell play in the Memorial Cup. He’s one of the Spitfire players that caught my eye when my Dad and I went to OHL Final Game #4 in Brampton. I think the homage/comparison to the Berg/Zezel/Osborne trio is pretty apt – Mitchell would be the Ozzy of those three, I think, a guy with some offensive skills, a lot of defensive sense and a perpetual motor.

It’s always tough to know from the outside, but he comes across as a heart and soul dressing room guy, too, the kind of emotional centre that young energetic teams need to succeed. That hypothesis was supported a bit by Bob Boughner’s comments on HNIC last night during the second intermission, when he referred to “Mitchy” as “one of those guys” in the dressing room that everyone keys off, implying that his team took a great deal of inspiration from Mitchell’s determination and effort in the third period against Rimouski, and that it was that spark that ignited the fire that ultimately powered the Spits to success in the tournament.

One other guy I’d love to see the Leafs take a flyer on is Scott Timmins – the Spits’ third line centre. He may not have the talent and skill set to make it to the NHL some day, but that kid knows how to play defense. He could definitely play for the Marlies and who knows, with a little work – which he very much seems capable of – he might bloom a little late into a nice find as a depth player.

@B Leaf – Yes, I say Kulemin is definitely a keeper! Certainly 20 or more goals next year is not out of the question. Down the road, 35-40?
If the Leafs ever trade this guy, he will come back to haunt them. Yes, he had an adjustment period but was getting better every game. Unlimited potential here!
Oreskovic, well not rounded yet, showed enough for a longer look. D-men normally take longer to blossom, and Oreskovic very well may develop into a solid defensive, tough, NHL defenseman, which every team loves. May not be a top four, but certainly a top six d-man is possible.

    @Gus
I understand your concerns with Oreskevic’s skating but he plays his position very well and definitely has a brain for the game. Last year he played significantly more minutes than a number 6 D-man and did not look a bit out of place. In fact his presence was significant. Remember he handled himself in a scrap with Lucic after Lucic cranked Grabovski. I really liked what I saw with Oreskevic.

MLHS is the best info on the buds period.

Here’s a question. If someone picks Oliver Ekman-Larrson 5-6 spot, who do you take between Schenn and Cowan?

Where does Kulemin play? Second line?
I agree he improved and I think he is a fine prospect with considerable upside.
In Russia he was a very good power forward type. Hope we see a little more of that in the next couple of years.

@Dan May – I’m not as convinced about Oreskovic. It’s not just his skating, his defensive side is suspect, and the reality is there are better defensemen out there that could do the job. Can’t see him being a regular on the Leafs or in the NHL for that matter.

@JaredofLondon – I agree, there is a logjam, but there are holes, and depth is as important to an organization (see Red Wings) as front line talent. Some are possibilities and others have graduated to a full time NHL: Bozak (top-6 potential basedon conversations with scouts), J Mitchell, Tlusty, all get a shot next season. Hanson (3rd/4th line center potential although should be starting on the Marlies), while D. Mitchell and Stralman are likely considered to have an NHL spot but that’s not a guarantee and they will have to fight for it. Stapelton is a career AHLer, as is Oreskovic. Dido has to get back to playing shape which means Marlies time.

So lets say the leafs don’t sign any significant free agents and lets say they trade Kaberle for picks or prospects (for example: Kaberle to Buffalo for 13th pick). Let’s say Grabovski signs. And lets say that Gustavsson signs. How will the roster shake down.
    Grabovski, Kulemin, Hagman
    Bozak, Stalberg, Ponikarovski
    Stajan, Stempniak, Blake
    J Mitchell, Mayers, Tlusty
    Schenn, White
    Kubina, Van Ryn
    Finger, Stralman
    Frogren
    Tokala, Gustavsson
That leaves D Mitchell, Stephanovich, Dido?, Hanson, Oreskevic, Pogge?, and others with the Marlies. The 7th pick and 13th pick? in junior.
Kubina moves at the trade deadline. Maybe Blake, Stempniak and Van Ryn too. Toskala will be determined by his play and that of Gustavsson.
Where does this team finish? Who has a big year? Is there a shot at Taylor Hall with this group?

B Leaf – Kulemin – I’m thinking 1st line although if you remember last year he started slowly – if this repeats itself he will probably start second line. Hopefully this year he will be more aclimatized – and be ready to go!
Schenn or Cowan? Tough one – but I think the Leafs have to go for offense this year after taking Luke Schenn last year. However, depending on what free agents they hope to sign (or should they acquire an additional higher pick via trade), this could change. Right now, I take Brayden Schenn!
