Allaire Positive for Pogge, Toskala and Monster

Justin Pogge

Newest goaltending consultant to the Leafs, Francois Allaire, father of the modern butterfly with exceptional credentials including working with Patrick Roy, Brian Hayward, as well as the guy who morphed Guy Hebert into an All Star in 1997 and J.S. Giguere. Most recently he worked with Ducks back up-turned-starter, Jonas Hiller to backstop the Ducks to a seven-game Round 2 of the 2008-09, Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Fine credentials indeed, but what can he do with the batch of Leafs goaltenders?

I won’t mince words and openly admit my admiration for Vesa Toskala. Inconsistent and difficult season aside, I believe he could be one of the NHL’s best entering the final season of his two-year contract.

In another post, I pointed out the notion of goaltender predictability after a drubbing of the Montreal Canadiens at the hands of the Maple Leafs, in light of the disastrous season of Carey Price.

In an interview on the FAN590, Allaire shirked talk about specific goaltenders before training camp, and also revealed something that had plagued my mind ever since the announcement of his hiring into the Leafs ranks.

Would he try to force the butterfly style on the Leafs stable of goalies?

The first reaction was that he would force improvement onto Vesa Toskala, and Justin Pogge using the butterfly style. It was comforting to hear him talk about working on speed and comfort level, as well as recovery.

It wasn’t the butterfly style that made Roy a hall of fame goalie – despite its effective way of taking away the lower part of the net – it was his ability to recover and get back into position with ease.

This is how Allaire worked and helped mold him into a legendary goalie. The pattern was evident with his other goalies, and what Price missed in Montreal last season – and partly why Roland Melanson was let go.

The Pogge era in Toronto was dead according to Steve Buffery’s article in the Toronto Sun. Brian Burke was quick to point out how a decision on the future of the 23-year old goaltender had not been made, noting this process as one of the unglamorous aspects of being a professional athlete, while management decides whether the athlete falls into the organization’s plans.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement of the 23-year old netminder, but it wasn’t a death knell, yet.

The hiring of Allaire may prove to be a sign indicating Pogge will be return in Marlies silks; not a bad decision, given the alternative should he be cut loose. Unlikely the Fort McMurray, Alberta native lands a back up role with another NHL club – let alone a starting position – and likely to continue development in the minor ranks. To qualify him, the Leafs will have to offer his contract with a 10-percent increase. So why not keep him in the fold as an asset, allowing him to further develop as a homegrown talent in their revamped minor ranks?

The question remains; will Pogge develop into a viable NHL goaltender?

If Burke can hire just as good a candidate for the Leafs AHL affiliate, Pogge’s retention falls under different circumstances with the Marlies; a new coach, new outlook, different, more complimentary style to that of Ron Wilson, with a crop of different more homegrown prospects to collectively develop.

Toronto will have to make a decision and soon, and the hiring of the ‘Goalie Guru’ is as good as it gets as a positive indication for the Leafs. Competition breeds Champions, and furthers along the development curve.

Along with infrastructure, the availability of Jonas “The Monster” Gustavsson still out there, the added incentive to entice the goaltender by the hiring makes a lot of sense.

Joe Resnick, the agent for ‘The Monster’ was on Hockeycentral last week and indicated how the goaltender would be visiting, Colorado, Dallas, San Jose and Toronto this week as part of a tour to make a decision on where he would like to sign.

There have been preliminary discussions with all teams, with the expectation he plays in the NHL next season. Burke indicated this would be the case in Toronto.

San Jose, with one of the best defenses in the league would surely help him, in particular, masking any deficiency.

However, mentoring under Toskala would be a plus, and while Gustavsson has worked with Allaire in the past, it isn’t the main factor to have him sign in Toronto.

But it sure must be enticing, short and long term.

The tour starts this week, and could last about 8-9 days; the agent wants to have his placement sooner rather than later, so Gustavsson could attend summer camp working with goaltending coach.

Under the current collective bargaining agreement, The Monster falls under the definitions of the entry-level contract and will only get a one-year deal for the following season.

The vision, and components to make the vision a reality are being put into place, an encouraging overall development in the management staff and execution of the vision, and in Leafs development. Part of the reason late round picks develop into valid NHLers is how they challenge their players providing tools to grow.

The infrastructure is being slowly assembled, and from early indications, the 2009 NHL Entry Draft seems to be the only viable milestone to have it firmly in place, with assets ready to be dealt should the opportunity arise.

Interior management is being molded into the vision for the future Buds. With the addition of the legendary Allaire, a solid piece of development and affirmation of one of the most important positions, goaltending, is shaping up.

Let the player additions begin.

he would be a good candidate for the salary dump player if the leafs move up. i dont think he would count against the cap if he doesnt play in the NHL and if he does come back then he has some potential. with only 2 years left on his deal MLSE would not be hard pressed to eat the 6 mil left where as the lightning im sure want it off the books

Your frustration is palpable! What goes hand in hand with jettisoning the ‘entitlement’ attitude is the nurturing of an environment of competition and a philosophy focused on earning your way on to the big club. I think this is the prime message in Burke’s arrival and Pogge will now have to work for his spot on the depth chart rather than expecting he is the anointed one. If Burke can sign Gustavsson and draft one of the top tenders in this upcoming draft, the Leafs depth at the position will have been radically altered from last year.

The Leafs not only need to keep their draft picks, they need to keep those drafted, patiently develop them, provide healthy competition, and promote to the big club only when the players have demonstrated capabilities required at the NHL level. All you need to do is look how other clubs are handling the likes of Abdelkader, Giroux, Ryan, and Helm to understand patience breeds player motivation and greater chances of success when the players finally get their opportunity.

It seems that this year the Leafs have a little bit of luck! Brian Burke wanted to go to east coast to be closer with his family – We got him as President and GM. Toronto was in the NCAA FAs sweepstakes – Hanson and Bozak chose Toronto, knowing that they have a great opportunity to play in the buds club. Fracois Allaire needed to be closer with his kids in Montreal – We got him as goaltender consultant. Although we lost the Gilroy sweepstakes, Gustavsson is choosing between Toronto and the other 3 clubs. With Cliff Fletcher in the future being resigned and Nonis in the house, our management is sound. We got decent coaching from Ron Wilson + his assistants. Now we need to look on for a developing coach for our Marlies farm team that can make a big impact on our prospects – upcoming Stefanovich, Gunnarson, Mikus, Stalberg, Dido and Pogge. Although Burke is stealing some of Duck’s management candidates (Nonis and Allaire), if that worked in Anaheim, there’s a high chance it will work here in Toronto.

Would it be a possibility that the Leafs – for back-up goalie – sign either Scott Clemmenson, Ty Conklin or Craig Anderson, UFA’s, if they are unable to sign Gustavsson?
Decent goalies – and the price should be right! I guess it depends on what the “brass” think of Pogge, and if they resign him, (which I think they will) depending on the $$$ of course! Really is he ready for “the big show”?

@ matt k, re: building through draft
pittsburgh may be only the first instance of a winning team built through the draft, but keep in mind that the draft mentality only began after the lockout. so it took 4 seasons for a team building through the draft to win the cup. considering it’s generally thought that it takes about 5 years to rebuild, that’s not too bad. i wouldn’t be surprised to see chicago win the cup in the next few years either, and while LA may have sucked this year, they’ve got loads of potential with a good core of youth at every position. also, keep in mind that detroit, while never actually rebuilding, has done very well at the draft despite consistently having late picks, and much of their core players were acquired through the draft.

Jordan – as Leaf GM I would jump on the deal mentioned – White and Stempniak for Clarkson and a 4th round pick.
Clarkson is a good, young gritty forward, and is cheap at $837,000 – and we gain a draft pick, while low, a draft pick is still valuable. I thought Clarkson was really coming on last season. Would be a great addition.
While I don’t look to get rid of White, it might have to be done. The big thing is we can dump Stempniak and his $2.5 million. Don’t think anyone would be foolish enough to claim him, and don’t think Burke believes in sending veterans down to the minors just for the sake of saving salary.

    @ brokensilence

Where is it said about this magic 5 year period to rebuild a team? Also, Marc-Andre Fleury was drafted 1st overall in 2003 by the Pens? Are we factoring him into this 5 year equation?

Fact remains, they have 2 #1 picks and 2 #2 picks. If that’s all they had and then had the rest of the team filled out with a formula like the Leafs have now, they would not have made the playoffs. Considering they have a way better team aside from those top 4 then the Leafs and still almost missed it this year.

Look at Washington. Non factors. They have countless quality first rounders playing for them, including Backstrom and of course Ovechkin, yet are not a threat for a Stanley Cup. They are mainly built out of the draft, but are missing some pieces to the puzzle.

I’m not saying it wouldn’t be nice to have a Tavares or a Duchene or a Hedman. I’m just saying you will never convince me that building through the draft is the only way to go post-lockout, and the only solution. Why do you say it is? Because of the salary cap? What happens when it comes time to re-signing your high draft picks? It’s just like signing a UFA…. Much has been made about your hands are tied because of the cap. Proper cap management is key, and a characteristic of a good GM. If a GM can only make ground up hoping to finish last and win the draft lottery, time to find yourself another GM.

No way man, Ian white was arguably toronto’s best defensive defenceman this season, just starting to blossom, the guy is unreal for his size, I agree Clarkson is a great young talent as well who can fight but not for Ian White. Ron wilson even said he was there best defenseman this year so you know hell be fighting for whitey to stay. Sure a 4th round pick could turn out to be a player of whites calibre but why wait for that to happen. Its not like Ian white is a veteran the guys 24.

    Thks

That’s exactly what I was thinking too; with Clarkson on Mitch’s wing and may’be a Moens or Phalsson, that would be a great plumbing line. White will be missed (if this deal goes down), but he’s a much smaller player then what Burke is looking for right now, albeit he’s got alot of heart, but Burke is carving this new Leafs Nation and sacrifices are necessary.

I know its Ek, but I would love the trade he’s coming up with today. Its very far fetched, just want to get everyone’s opinion.

    – Sources are telling me that the Flyers are attempting to work a deal with the LA Kings for the 5th Overall pick….

Also, I am hearing that the Maple Leafs are showing interest in Maxim Lapierre….

There are also rumors that the Colorado Avalanche, Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres have interest in Marty Biron. Stay tuned for more…

    – Eklund.

Don’t see the Lapierre trade go down, we’d have to give up either Poni (he’s more proven this year) could fetch a prospect (albeit unproven), can’t really think of any other player(s) we could give up????

Nice article as usual Gus. One thing you failed to mention though is, that Allaire could be very instrumental in steering the Leafs towards picking a future goalie either through the draft, or through trade. The man has obviously met countless goalie prospects through his clinics, and has to be great at picking up on talent in prospects. I see him playing the role of scout a lot, when he’s not coaching.

I might be jumping into the convo a little late, but I think the main reason they didnt give Pogge more games at the end of this season was bc it would have gave his agent more to negotiate with come this off season. As you know, Burke wont be overpaying for marginal talent (see Moore, Antropov). I think the tough talk Brian is giving is to give Pogge a kick in the as* and we will see him re-signed with the Marlies. C

ommon Burke, bring us the Monster to challenge Vesa as number 1!

To add to the fodder, there is no way Whitey is going anywhere. He’s 24, one of the better plus-minus on the leafs, fights, quaterbacks the powerplay, and most importatnly can play some D… not to mention he is of the CDN world junior pedigree. Plus he showed alot of character by fighting his way into the lineup last year… sounds like a Burke type player to me.

It is about time the Leafs started establishing a player development program that moves young people through a system and brings them to an NHL level where they are playable people or valuable trade material. I never could understand why Toronto never did this, it is the most inexpensive way to bring talent and success to the parent club!

Pogge is an example of bad player development on both the skill level and the attitude development. Pogge hangs onto the ‘tough single mom upbringing so Im owed something’ The worst attribute a young player can have is thinking he is better than he is.

I truly hope Pogge sharpens up and now learns from the best and becomes the goalie he has the talent to be. We now have a really nice core of quality youth moving through so lets guide them to the NHL and really prepare them mentally and tactically to excell there!

@Blue Max – excellent point regarding Allaire – like you say if anyone should know the top goalie prospects it should be Allaire. So he can either point out the best prospect left in the second round – or should this not occur, at least suggest later in the draft a goalie who is not highly rated – but has great potential. Invaluable!
Perhaps Allaire will also know which way Gustavsson is leaning?
