Questions for Dave Morrison

Submit your questions for the Leafs‘ Director of Amateur Scouting in the comments thread and I’ll ask a few of my choosing in an interview with Morrison tomorrow. And yes, I will kick things off with “who are we going to draft?” but I don’t anticipate any sort of disclosure.

What kind of skillset will the Leafs be looking for in the draft this year? Have you talked about a position that the Leafs may be focusing on this year?

What do you think of John Moore. He is a fantastic skater and could end up being one of the best D-men in the draft. I would love to get another first rounder and grab him between the 11-13 spot.

How do you guys like Ryan O’Reilly? Based on the way the team has operated under Brian Burke, he’s the type of guy I imagine the Leafs having a lot of interest in, fits the mold extremely nicely: Extremely hard worker, good passionate person, and a pretty damn good hockey player too. Most likely available early-mid 2nd round, is he someone that’s relatively high on the Leafs radar?

Seeing as how Burke has such a defined idea of a hockey player he wants to build his team around, does your team of scouts go into the draft with a slightly different list of who the best player available is?

In other words, does a prospect that fits Burke’s mould of a good hockey player trump a player that is more widely considered a better prospect throughout the league and major scouting agencies?

    2 questions

    1) Does Brayden Schenn possess 1st centre upside?

    2) What has made MSP a #10 pick in Bob Mackenzies draft list? Is it shortcomings? improvements of others?

    Thank You

Leafs Nation got a solid look at Dale Mitchell of the Windsor Spitfires this year at the Memorial Cup. What are his plans for next year, and where do you see him fitting in with the big club a couple of years down the road.

Kind of a hard hitting question (maybe)… and kind of a 2-part question…
    .
“What big difference does the Detroit scouting system have over the Leafs scouting system? Have you learned anything from their system to make yourselves better picking in the later rounds?”

    @ Corey
    .
Even if he does have a good idea at who is the biggest sleeper pick, why would he say? So someone else can grab that prospect before the Leafs?
    .
With questions, you have to ask something that is not too specific that it will hurt the leafs so that he will actually answer it.

Are there any teams offering first round picks in exchange for taking on salary? Would Burke consider that? and What kind of salary range are we talking to bring the two parties together?
    Thanks.

As the Director of Amateur Scouting, what is your interaction with the GM, Asst. GM, and/or coach in regards to players/prospects scouting reports?
    or
We are under the impression that the final say is Mr. Burke’s. Assuming that this is fact, how are potential draftee’s cases argued to Mr. Burke so that he makes the best choices – if its you, how do you get sold on a guy?

How would you compare our young NCAA players (Hanson, Bozak, Stalberg), to our current CHL draftee’s (Stefanovich, Didomenico, Mitchell)?, and how does the NCAA rate against the CHL given the age of players coming out of the former are usually older than the latter? Is it generally considered that the NCAA is a closer jump to the NHL than junior because of that?

1 – Do you anticipate many transactions on draft day from the Leafs?
2 – I hear this draft from 20th to 40th is extremely hard to separate players, with the Leafs losing their 2nd draft pick, might we expect to see Burke attempt to acquire some additional top 40 picks?
3 – How does a team decide which scout’s opinion is more valuable than the other scouts when it comes to deciding drafting orders?
4 – Does the GM have much of an input in the drafting selection?
5 – How do you feel about the lottery system?
6 – Is it worth drafting a goalie with a high pick? (since they rarely turn out well)
7 – With staff members moving to other clubs prior to the draft (like Nieuwendyk), what really prevents these guys from stealing their previous clubs drafting plans?
8 – Is the risk of taking a slipping Russian worth it?
9 – Often gems are taken in the last rounds, are these type of players actually rated highly but taken late because of the likelihood other teams are not aware of them?
10 – I’m surprised teams don’t splurg on players that didn’t get selected in the draft once it is over. Often players develop well after the draft and you hear teams mention how they nearly selected them but went with a different player.

Without disclosing any secret plan to draft an unknown a la Montreal drafting Petr Svoboda. Is there anyone in the Canadian University system that has the raw skill for a team to draft in the late rounds. I played in the CIS some years ago and there were more players drafted from my high school team than all of CIS.

Both of those picks you are referring to are outside the top 40, I believe they are 50-60 range.
