Draft Day is Here – The Kaberle Offer

I hope you’ve all called in sick for work, abandoned your family for the day, or are otherwise prepared to fill your normally empty schedule with the whirling excitement of rumours and deals that is the NHL Draft Day.

Firstly, the team that tabled the “unexpected offer” for Kaberle has been revealed to be the Bruins.  For the past few weeks, Boston has been one of the teams mentioned in the rumour mill as having an interest in Kaberle.  His outlet passes and puck skills would make an already impressive transition game almost unparalleled.  Furthermore, Boston’s powerplay would immediately shoot from “frickin good” to “automatic goal”.  On a related note, much talk has surrounded Boston’s refusal to give RFA Phil Kessel an offer on the level of that which David Krejci received, with management preferring to move him instead.  In a strange once-per-millenia occurence, these rumours actually represented themselves more or less accurately in reality.

The proposed deal is: Phil Kessel for Tomas Kaberle and the 7th overall pick.

Now, Leaf Nation’s reaction is definitely universal.  It likely resembles something like this:

(The following conversation occurred not too long ago between a very good friend and I)

Nikhil: “Boston wants Kaberle and our first rounder for Kessel”

Henry: “FUCK THAT!”

For all the Henrys out there in the legion of Leaf fans: relax.  Brian Burke has publicly stated how much he values our picks, especially that which we have in the first round.  He has also declared that he had intended to let the losers of the Jay Bouwmeester sweepstakes drive up the price for his prized Czech blueliner.  Do not doubt that he leaked the “unexpected” offer as incentive to begin the bidding war a little early.  Draft day is upon us, and it’s time to see what our new GM is made of.  So all of you fellow slackers that have cleared your days for this epic event, hit up that sofa and get ready.  For those stuck at work and everyone in general, remember we will be covering tonight’s proceedings LIVE here on MLHS.

Cheers,

Nikhil

I wonder why Boston is trying to move Kessel when Patrice Bergeron has a $5.7 million salary and he is a serious under achiever since his concussions. Wouldnt you think they would try t move Bergeron and keep Kessel? That tells me there is something seriously wrong with Kessel’s locker room presence.

    Stay away from this guy!!!

I cant wait to see what happens. I think a Kessel +25 pick looks alright. But everyone has to remember Burke said hes going to try to get Tavares until his name is called to another team, so anything he does right now will be to try to get closer to drafting him. Wonder how Kessel could fit in? Maybe Atlanta somehow?

I think TSN got the details a little wrong… Cox is reporting that the 7th overall is not a part of the proposed deal and that a pick would be coming from the Bruins if anything.

    http://www.thestar.com/sports/hockey/article/657011

McGran reporting that FLA may be interested in acquiring Kaberle to replace Bouwmeester as we reported here last night… still hearing that a deal involving one for the other + picks is being discussed.

Is it normal that I woke up this morning with a bone after dreaming Burkie was able to trade Lee Stempniak for Colorado’s #3, Stajan for the 4th with our 7th still in-hand?

    @ peter

I think the reason would be that Kessel could fetch more then the Bergeron. The return for Kessel could be just what it would take to push them over the top.

    What about :

    -Kessel +25th for Kaberle
-Kessel for the 4th from ATL and their second (34th)
-Then we have the 4th, 7th, and 34th making Tavares/Hedman/Duchene possible for sure

    as per Damien Cox:

TSN broke the story this morning that the Bruins had offered the 21-year-old Kessel to the Leafs to land Kaberle, which was bang-on. But the TSN report also included the seventh pick, and multiple sources say this morning the Leafs would not give up the No. 7 selection to make that deal happen. In fact, the Leafs might be the team getting the extra pick in such a transaction.

Burke has already conceded he will not be getting either the NYI or TB pick. Both teams have demanded Schenn as part of any deal with the Leafs, and that is the one player Burke will not move. 3rd overall is also unlikely as the Avs do not appear set to deal.
    .
If the Boston deal is true as reported by Cox (Kaberle for Kessel + 25), that gives the Leafs the 7 and 25, plus the two second rounders. It would not be a stretch to suggest that Kubina, one of Stajan/Grabo, and the 25 could be turned into the 4 overall.
    .
Under that scenario, you are looking at 4, 7, 50, 58 as your first four picks … not too shabby.

That is an awful offer. I wouldn’t trade our pick alone for Kessel. Don’t get me wrong he is a pretty good young player but he isn’t the type I want to build my team around, I would rather have our pick and pick a guy like Schenn, MPS, Cowen, ect. I hope this offer isn’t accurate, it’s a way overpayment. Didn’t they say originally before revealing it to be the Bruins that the offer was a significant player and a pick? That makes much more sense. I could see something like Kaberle and our 2nd for kessel and their 2nd or something similar.

Haha, I honestly feel kind of stupid for believing BB would actually trade Kabs and our 7th overall for Kessel, I mean honestly, if basically every Leafs fan on the planet thinks it would be a horrible trade surely BB would feel the same way. The thought of trading JUST Kaberle for Kessel and THEIR first makes me salivate though! Like someone posted earlier, it would make trading up ALOT easier!

    ps.
It’s also dumb that people (like myself) believed that OUR first was involved seeing as how Burke has already said that the offer would see US getting a pick and player

This is Stupid. Think of it this way. If Burke signed Kessel as a RFA – he would give up a 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

He trades Kabby for a 1st and a Roster player.

And he has Kessel, a 1st for this year, and a roster player. Meanwhile he’s given up a 1st (next year’s a weeker draft and the Leafs will likely have a later pick than 7th overall) a 2nd and a 3rd.

Sounds a lot better to me…. Although I know Burke hate’s to do the signing of RFA, but it’s smarter, isn’t it?

If we can get Kessel and their 25th… I would try to use anyone else (besides Schenn) and a 2nd round pick to move up to #4 or #5.
    .
If we walk out of the first round with #5, #25 and Phil Kessel… and only give up Kabby, a 2nd round, and one of our mediocre roster players… this will be a great day!

Kaberle is a great offensive player, but is inconsistent in the defensive zone and possesses no physical game – and no aggressive streak – whatsoever.
    .
If you can get a future 40 goal scorer (was on pace for that this season) and a first round pick for that, you do it.
    .
Sorry to rain on the Kaberle parade, but after watching his entire career, I honestly don’t see Kaberle’s value as being greater than a 1st rd pick and a good young roster player. Maybe you can add a prospect in there, but in terms of valuation that’s iffy.
    .
Seriously, where does the massive hype come from? Doing the “flamingo” every time a shot comes his way – you know, instead of doing his job and blocking it – tends to lower a defender’s value.
    .
Great offensive player, but he is not the complete package … which is why the type of return Burke got for Pronger is a completely unrealistic expectation.
