Rumoured Organizational List of Potential FA Targets

The feeling as the Leafs embark on this year’s unrestricted free agency period is that Brian Burke is not enamored with the ’09 free agent class and will neither overpay in salary or term. It appears Burke’s focused on acquiring his high-end talent through trade.  In regards to the long-rumoured Mike Cammalleri signing, the word right now is that he’s not on the radar although this is certainly subject to change should circumstances change.  More likely, if Burke can move Kaberle and/or Kubina and sign Jonas Gustavsson, the approach will be to strengthen from the goal out and thus most money will be allotted to high-end D rather than forwards at this time.

This is an organizational list of potential free agent targets for Burke and co. that was sent my way by a source:

The Sedins (no way Burke would be interested in a 12 year deal though, 5-6 years maximum).
Brian Gionta (only for a lot less than he’s been making)
Manny Malholtra
Ryan Bayda
Chris Neil
Colton Orr
Brian Mcgrattan (on a two-way)
Joel Ward
Taylor Pyatt
Mike Rupp
Francois Beauchemin
Mike Komisarek (only if he can move Kabs or Kubina or both)
Bouwmeester (should the Flames fail to come to an agreement… same caveat applies as with Komisarek)
Mattias Ohlund
Travis Moen
Andrew Alberts
Greg Zanon
Johnny Oduya

A blog to come breaking down some of these possibilities, moreso some of the lesser names that Burke may very well key in on. Your thoughts on some of these names?

Still not a lot to report on the Gustavsson front… the word is that Burke’s getting quite close but that the Stars and their Swedish contingent still shouldn’t be underestimated.

Well if the Monster doesnt sign in Toronto and Gerber gets picked up….hahaha:

*from TheScore.ca*: E.J. Hradek of espn.com is reporting 44-year old goaltender Ed Belfour is seeking a return to the National Hockey League. The two time Vezina Trophy winner last played professionally with Leskands of the Swedish second division in 2007-08, where he played 20 games with 16 wins, a 1.79 goals against average and a .921 save percentage. His last season in the NHL was during the 2006-07 campaign with the Florida Panthers, where he complied 27 wins, a 2.77 GAA and a .902 SV% in 58 games.

Hradek writes Belfour, who’s 484 wins rank third all-time, has kept in shape by training and competing in triathlons.

    @sedins do it,

I believe the cap hit would be 5.93/year per sedin – 41.5M over 7 years according to your split

Gustavsson went back on his word of letting teams know BEFORE July 1st. He can piss off like Sundin.

Nobody holds us over a barrel any longer. Too bad, I would like the kid to sign but enough of this bullshit.

@The_Cause I would hope the organization would have a little more class seeing as Bertuzzi pretty much crippled a former Leafs alumni Dominic Moore’s brother. I would consider disowning the Leafs if Burke signed Bertuzzi. Hollweg was bad but my hatred for Bertuzzi is off the scale. He cheapshotted Steve Moore and has yet to apologize and continues to pull down a seven figure salary season in season out while years down the line Steve continues to try to battle back to fitness. As far as I’m concerned Bertuzzi should have never been allowed back into the league. Problem: Burke was the GM of the Canucks when he broke Moore’s neck and I always wondered if that was a leading reason why Moore was traded away seeing as he was doing a pretty good job.

If Gustavsson falls through I wonder how much it would cost to convince Georgi Gelashvili to play in North America. He was playing for Yaroslavyl Lokomotiv in the KHL last year his numbers:
GP W L T SO SA GA SV SV% GAA
    Gelashvili Georgiy 50 19 13 5 0 495 33 462 93.3 1.75

Doubt we could get him but he was pretty awesome in the KHL.

Cannot see Chris Neil in a Leaf uniform….Colton Orr would be a better fit.

@ Bleed Blue and White Who are you reffering to as a Blue chip Dman? Certainly not Phaneuf!!
6.5 million for a cheapshot artist who has taken a nose dive in D zone responsibilty the last two seasons. He is not a blue chipper…more a liability.

I really hope an agreement can be finalized to make Gustavson our backup goalie for the 2009-10 season. Perhaps sighing a guy like Matias Ohlund aslo from Sweden would entice Gustavson to play for toronto and would also alow Brian Burke Trade Kaberle and/or Kubina. I would also like it if they sighned Mike Cammalleri. Lower down in the depth charts i would aim at a guy like chris Neil but i would do more of the bottom 6 forwards next year so our young prospects cant get more ice during this season and make our big free agent splash next season.

Possible UF’S to Toronto – Cammalleri
    – Gustavson
    – Ohlund
    – Moen

Players possibly to be traded Kaberle,Kubina,Stajan,White,Poni,Grabovski

Every one keeps hoping that Gustafsson signs in Toronto. The guy can’t make a simple decision about where he wants to play. Screw him! His not the only goalie in the world, besides what are we trying to sign? A number one goalie or a back-up. If BB where smart he would have drafted Hacket or Olivier Roy but didn’t even give them a sniff. If all you want is a competent back up to give Toskola a rest once in a while, then why get all bent out of shape when some swede can’t get his shit together. Craig Anderson from Florida isn’t bad, Brent Johnson from Washington always impressed me until he got hurt. Even Stephen Vaiquette from the New York Rangers would be great until we can draft some blue chip goaltenders. Personaly I would try to trade for Halak in Montreal. Young and he`s got skill, perfect for what we need. Hell even bringing Cujo back wouldn`t kill us.

    @newguy
You sound like a dick to be honest. The guy is having trouble because his mother just died a few weeks back, hes only 24, he has no family, and he will have to move to another side of the world with whatever decision he makes….I would shit my pants if that was me. Thats a tough decision, and if it were the other way around and Burke would take his time as well if he could pick from any goalie in the world with no deadline
