Cox: Burke targeting Malhotra, Beauchemin
Damien Cox is confirming the Leafs’ interest in Manny Malhotra as first reported in the MLHS FA Targets blog, suggesting he’s on Burke’s radar today. Malhotra’s never lived up to the offensive expectations that accompany a forward drafted seventh overall (in the 1998 draft), but he has a big, solid frame, plays an accomplished defensive game and has the type of leadership qualities Burke values. As Burke aims to reshape his bottom six, Malhotra is a worthy checking line center that fits his mold. Could mean not so good things for Matt Stajan.
Cox is also noting interest in Francois Beachemin as reported as well as possible revived trade talks between Burke and Chiarelli on the topic of Kaberle and Kessel.

Ponikarovsky – Grabovski – Kulemin
Hagman – Bozak – Tlusty
Blake – Stajan – Stempniak
Orr – Mitchell – Mayers

Heres a few points from my point of view:
-I TOTALLY agree with the guys you left out, but Hagman is a top 6 and should play with Grabo and Kulemin. Tlusty should play with whoever is on our other top 6 line with Blake.(Shoot me if you like but I want to bring Sundin back for one year to be captain, then pass it to Schenn. Sundin would do wonders to the development of our young guys, and IMO we owe it to him after some idiots kicked him to the curb)
-@SCHENN Devereaux better be our 4th line center. Hes fast, kills penalties, cheap, and wants to play! I wouldnt change much to what you want. Just this:
Kulemin-Grabo-Hagman
Tlusty-Sundin-????? (Kadri/Bozak/Hanson) whoever was ready really
Malhotra-Mitchell-Blake
Orr-Devereaux-Mayers
Thats what I want to see right now

First comment was to JMAC, sorry!

maybe its just me but i dont think john mitchell is all that great. if he plays on anything except the 4th line i will be unhappy. he dont dish the puck off nearly as often as he should which results in him giving the puck up more often than not. his goals came on rebounds or a lucky bounce. nothing that would warrent him being given more minutes than he deserves.
as for stajan kaberle and kubina logging late minutes, well in all fairness there were many many late game combacks so im sure they had a huge hand in those combacks. also, kaberle was hurt an awful lot last season and didnt play all that well when he came back on and off. he looked defencively challenged most of the time. it was sad to watch because you know he is far better talented than that.
i dont want kessel. its a waste of time and money. the kid is talented but he dont have the talented centre to play with as he does in boston. kadri isnt ready for the NHL yet and there is no brayden schenn. i would say if you trade for kessel then ship kessel off to LA for schenn. can fill in any missing pieces for both those trades but everyone gets the general idea. if it has to be Vancouver getting kaberle they would have to give up schnieder and hodgson. of course we can send whatever else needs to be sent but otherwise no deal if those 2 are not included.
i have never liked heatley probably mostly because he plays for ottawa but he always seemed like the cocky arrogant selfish player that ive seen a few times in all the years ive watched hockey. i think he has a worse attitude than that of that idiot that went back to NYR. cant wait to see phaneuf get hold of him this season. a lot of sens fans are angry for good reason but they are saying this should keep him off the olympic team. i dont agree. heatley wants to play for the pride of his country. let him! not wanting to play for the oilers and sens is a personal and as far as heatley is concerned a professional choice.
sure hope burke gets gustaavson. i dont believe he is leaning towards dallas. thats just some idiot making up storys. before gustaavson went back to sweden he was leaning towards toronto so how does it change. i say burke works some magic and lands him by tomorrow.
keep up the good work on the posts guys. its awesome to read and makes it more fun to be a leafs fan.

@Jordan
Things have changed since the Sundin era in Toronto…and most of us look at it as for the better, while menawhile his career has taken a downturn. We can’t just bring the dude back and automatically throw a C on his jersey because of who he was back in the day….that was then and this is now.
I mean Sundin wouldn’t be bad to have back, even just for a limitted role + PP, but he’d have to be making less than, or exactly 1.5mil for the season, otherwise we could spend that money elsewhere.
July 2nd, 2009 at 3:48 pm
If Vancouver gave up Schneider and Hodgson in a deal for Kaberle, Gillis would be tarred, feathered, and dumped into the ocean. And there would be a golden statue of Burke erected outside the ACC.
July 2nd, 2009 at 3:49 pm
Ya but for a 1 year deal it would be small, but money isnt the problem this year, its next year, and he will retire for sure by then. I just figure we allllllll know were not going to win this year, so I would want to make the most of it by letting some of his leadership off on the younger guys, and Im sure it would weigh in on Gustavsson’s decision to have him here….just my 2 cents, and give him a chance to give us even more back
July 2nd, 2009 at 3:58 pm
Also, Burke has always said, when he builds a team he loves to have that one Vetern guy who just doesnt look good in any uniform other then his. He said its one of the most important things to him to have one to add experience and leadership. Thats why he got Linden in Vancouver, then Selanne in Anaheim….Sundin in Toronto just fits that bill to a T
July 2nd, 2009 at 4:10 pm
@jordan
Sundin will probably sign with a contender…we’re not even close to that word yet
July 2nd, 2009 at 5:02 pm
Man all this talk about how the leafs are rebuilding this is really good for the Marlies guys like Stalberg Bozak Hanson Stefonavich Stralman etc all these young players who may not crack the squad will be playing for the marlies
July 2nd, 2009 at 5:15 pm
Fuck Mal”asshole”tra, sign Beauchemin at all costs. Can’t be much clearer on this.
July 2nd, 2009 at 5:21 pm
Actually, if the Leafs are that desperate for a third line big guy, why not sign Chris Gratton? Doesn’t he have a cup ring or something?
July 2nd, 2009 at 5:31 pm
I just like the thought of Malhotra because you know he wants to play here. To me thats a huge part of signing someone, just to add the intensity and passion to win that some people dont have.
July 2nd, 2009 at 5:35 pm
@Blue Max
You and others with your frame of mind (see Sather, Glen and Gainey, Bob) are why there are these stupid deals in the NHL…
July 2nd, 2009 at 5:36 pm
I pretty sure he was joking….he usually has good ideas
July 2nd, 2009 at 5:46 pm
Well c’mon, we have Beauchemin, he wears #4, same type, slightly better I’d say. FBs +/- has been worse on a much better team…
He should be lucky to get 2 mil
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:23 pm
The Leafs have enough defenseman, time to concentrate on some forwards.
I`d take Malholtra in a heartbeat and hope that once he`s here he regains his passion for the game and finally realizes his potention and shows why he was selected in the first round.
Who cares if Gratton has a Cup Ring, alot of useless plugs have been a part of a great team and have ended up with up a Championship Ring, that doesn`t neccesarily make them a good player!
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:04 pm
Its so nice to come to a site that, 1. truely care about the leafs, 2. Make legitabmite and intellegent comments, not like some of the morons on tsn, star, etc, etc. And even better make predictions that usually have some basis and many of them come to fruition. Great work by many of the bloggers.

Everyon, if your on Facebook join my “Rick Nash, PLEASE come home to the Leafs!” group
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:15 pm
kaberle stajan and frogren and a 2nd for pmb and restriced free agent josh harding… not sure about the second in there as well but pmb would shore up the right side
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:56 pm
I don’t want Kessel
I don’t want Colberne
I don’t want to deal with Boston
Screw them
July 2nd, 2009 at 9:44 pm
how insightfull
July 2nd, 2009 at 9:52 pm
Ya your right, 36 goals? 21 years old?….nope not a Burke player….
July 2nd, 2009 at 10:34 pm
The defensive core will include a few of the regulars and some of the not mentioned but let it be clear Stralman should be joining the Figure Skating Association of Sweeden this guy has no balls and I wouldn’t want him on defense. The defensive core will probably look like this:
Exelby Schenn
Finger VanRyan
Harrision White
Komisarik Orsevic
On forward:
Kulemin Grabovski Tlusty
D. Mitchell Stajan Hanson
Bozak Michell Orr
Mayers Blake Ponkarovsky
This team will not be winning a Stanley Cup and there are a number of lame players that have to start to show a lot more grit ie., Poni, Stajan not to mention Stempniak they`re not on contract for next year and I can see them waived this year as they really don`t match up well with what Burke is wanting. One thing is for sure they will not be pushed around Lucic will have his ass kicked by Orr or Komisarek or Mayers so running a guy into the glass just wont happen again and on the island there will be payback for a hit on hagman last season that was just a cheap shot. If anything the upcoming year is to get back and beat the sh!t out of the opponents and send a message the Leafs are nasty in your face pugnasitc and truculant artists!
July 2nd, 2009 at 10:40 pm
Im sorry, but that gets my vote for the worst lines anyone on this site EVERY made lol….
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:33 pm
Why does no one pay attention to the UFA Marc Andre Bergeron> for a guy who is under 30 and put up 14 goals 18 A for 32pts is not bad at all. He was also a +5. I’d prefer him over Beauchimin. what do you guys think?
July 3rd, 2009 at 12:39 am
@Jordan
Thank you buddy but I wasn’t. I still remember the write ups on Beauchemin during the Stanley Cup playoffs where the Ducks went all the way. True warrior, and a big time hitter. #4 got benched in his first playoffs, though I still think he’s a good defenseman, but I’d rather have FB. We sucked on the goals-against this year, and #4 was part of it.
July 3rd, 2009 at 12:47 am
Can’t believe you left Hagman out of your line-up, as he is probably the best forward the Leafs have at this point in time.
I also don’t know why people wanna give up on Stempniak and try to say he doesn’t play the so-callled “Burke Style”. I’m pretty sure he is a decent sized kid who finishes his checks, is still young and has the potential to break out and fill the net with rubber!
Do the Sedin’s play the “Burke Style?” Thought not, so why did Burke draft, re-sign and heavily pursue (flew to Sweden to talk with them) them?
As for a possible Kaberle for Kessel trade, I’d have to think long and hard about it, seeing as the Leafs are hurting for offensive defencemen, although a player who scored 36 goals at the age of 21 is a great asset to add and would be tough to say “no” to. Now that the ball is in the Burke’s hand, I can see Boston havng to throw in a pick and/or prospect along with Kessel to acquire Kaberle. If Tomas does go, I’d like to see Stralman brought in to follow in his footsteps in becoming an All-Star defenceman.
Schenn – Van Ryn
Komisarek – Stralman
Finger – White
(Exelby, Frogren, Oreskovic, Vorobiev)
July 3rd, 2009 at 1:00 am
No more free agents other than Gustafsson, we need to trade Stajan, Stempniak, and Mayers for draft picks, Then make the Kaberle deal for a number one centre, a young one, his name is Cogliano, not Kessel, no way the Oilers can keep those three now, so their coach is Pat Quinn, bet he would love to have Kaberle, Stajan and Poni, for Cogliano and Penner… Quinn gets his guys, BB gets his, everyone happy….
July 3rd, 2009 at 1:30 am
@Wags
I shiver at the thought of Dustin Penner playing for the Maple Leafs
July 3rd, 2009 at 1:50 am
Yea, Penner sucks, I agree. He was part of the deal because the Oilers needed to dump his stupid contract. Burke was right not to match, and Lowe got the raw end of the deal there, deservingly so.
July 3rd, 2009 at 1:59 am
If Penner plays with Spezza, he will score 40 goals, I think Cogliano can get the other 10 they need to match Heatley, I really feel Heatley just saved Tambelini’s job, this would have been a great trade for Ottawa, and been a Leaf fan, I am glad it fell through, Hope he goes to LA…
July 3rd, 2009 at 8:33 am
Toronto Sun today is reporting the rumour that the Leafs are pursuing Beauchemin and at the same time flipping Kaberle to Boston for Kessel. Beauchemin is an outstanding defender who can skate, pass, and bring a strong physical factor. He strikes me as having an that X factor of being a winner. The only problem if we sign him is that I think it takes us out of the running for Taylor Hall.
If we go into the season with Beauchemin, Schenn, Komisarek, White, Van Ryn, Finger, and Excelby that would mean that Stralman and Oreskevic will get another full year in the AHL which is a good thing. It also makes me wonder if they want to try White as a top six forward. Personally I would leave White on the D, he is too good to mess with, and they need his offense from that position more. If Beauchemin is signed their defence will be the deepest and one of the best in the league. Every one of them is in his prime (except Schenn-but he is already playing like he is in his prime). They have plenty of shut down types, with great size. I think they would have a very good presence on the PP with White, Van Ryn, and Beauchemin. Those three are really smart with the puck and can all shoot- and look to shoot.
If they land Kessel for Kaberle (not completely convinced they should- I would love to know what else is available) then the one good thing is that Grabovski would have a sniper on his line. Last year Grabovski set up his line mates with A1 chances only to see them miss the net or fan on a three foot putt. Kessel can finish. Kessel would get alot of PP time here. Kessel…Grabovski…Hagman would be an intriguing line. They could score 75-80 Goals. That is first line production. Not to sure where the rest of the goals would come from but Blake, Stajan, Ponikarovski should pot 60-70 between them. The question marks will fall to the young players like Kulemin, Tlusty, and Bozak or Stahlberg if they make the team. They way I see the line up shaking down is something like this if the trade is made:
Kessel…Grabovski…Hagman
Ponikarovski…Stajan…Kulemin
Stempniak…Tlusty…Blake
Mayers…Mitchell…Orr
If Stempniak or anyone else stumbles out of the gate I expect that Bozak and Stahlberg will get in there with the opportunity to stick.
I would expect the Marlies to ice a very interesting team this year with alot of genuine prospects getting a chance to play. Bozak, Hanson, Stahlberg, Dale Mitchell, Didomenico, Stralman, Oreskevic and maybe Stephanovich will be in their line up.
July 3rd, 2009 at 8:49 am
Tlusty and Stajan would have to swtich spots there. Stajan (if he still has a role here) would be a good 3rd line center, and I think Tlusty will brake out this year. His AHL stats are compairable to other top scorers in the NHL at his age. Hes not too small either so he should fit in well
