New Priority: Target Barker, Versteeg

With news breaking about the Chicago Blackhawks possibly making a critical error in filing qualifying offers to Restricted Free Agents Cam Barker, Kris Versteeg, Ben Eager, Colin Fraser, Aaron Johnson and Troy Brouwer, I can’t help but think Brian Burke is salivating at the thought of acquiring two players who would strenghten the Leafs‘ core in an instant.

Those two players are Barker and Versteeg. The pair of twenty-three year-olds are coming off remarkable seasons with the Blackhawks. Barker had a career-year, scoring 6 goals, 34 assists and 40 points. The 6’3, 222 pound offensive defenseman is the kind of player the Leafs could potentially replace Tomas Kaberle with — should Burke opt to trade him, of course.

Versteeg, who played his first full season in the NHL, performed at a surprising rate, notching 53 points and 22 goals. While he lacks size (5’10, 180 pounds), he is said to have defensive awareness in his own end, which will help him have a lenghty career in the NHL despite his smallish stature. His role in the NHL is yet to be determined, but there’s no denying his potential — 4 goals and 12 points in 17 playoff games, anyone?

Burke, who has close to 10 million dollars in cap space, has the flexibility to not only offer the duo contracts (should they be rendered Unrestricted Free Agents), but to also stay in the hunt for UFA goaltender Jonas Gustavsson, who is believed to make his decision in the coming days.

While Dave Nonis informed the media today that the Leafs are done with signings until the dust settles, you can bet that claim will be withdrawled should the Blackhawks epic fail with their qualifying offers.

Of course, adding another defenseman in Barker would further crowd the Leafs’ defense. But no worries, this is the kind of problem GM’s pray for. Particularly those whose names start with Bryan and end with Murray.

If Barker joins the mix, then all indications point to the trading of Kaberle, who would presumably be shipped for a young scoring forward.

So let’s recap the potential events should the Blackhawks fail to secure their RFA’s:

1) Leafs acquire Cam Barker and Kris Versteeg

2) Kaberle traded for a young scoring forward (Phil Kessel?) and/or prospects

Consensus:

Leafs upgrade their defense to a god-like level and acquire forwards to start building the top-six. Epic.

This is probably a dream, of course, but it’s fun to speculate. It is a possible scenario, though, so is it really that absurd?

Probably. But hey, at the end of the day it doesn’t really matter because I’ll still wake up every morning knowing that the Leafs are going to completely manhandle the Montreal Canadiens’ Fellowship of the Midgets next season.

You stay classy, MLHS.

Looks like a stapleton replacement. Decent enough scorer for the AHL. Only 25 too.

To quote De Niro, “I heard some things.”
    .
Boston deal looks to be dead – again. SJ out of the picture for now, were only really in it while Clowe was RFA. Chicago calling about salary dump options, they are calling a lot of teams apparently, probably trying to move Campbell.
    .
LA is still open to talking. Vancouver has definite interest in a few Leafs’ players. Minnesota is only of interest if a deal can’t be reached with Monster. Here’s a shocker: been hearing rumblings about Atlanta of late. Not sure if they’re trying to turn Atlanta into Toronto south, but they keep popping up in a lot of the talk. I would guess they are probably trying to get Poni to reunite with Antropov — definite chemistry btw those two.

    @ Ryan

Let me guess, he’s gotta part the sea and walk on water, raise mountains and leap buildings in a single bound. Give me a freaking break dood. He was left a franchise that had overpaid underperforming bums, vitrually no assets that could be moved and your unhappy? Why because he refused to sell the farm? Because he refused to pay more players insane overpaid salarys for 6+ years? Because he didn’t get Bozak and isn’t in the running for Gustavsson?

    Ridiculous post.

I don’t think I’d even consider trading Tomas Kaberle at this point!!
I like how the defense is lining up having an offensive d-man playing with a defensive d-man on every pairing.
    Kaberle – Schenn
    Komisarek – White
    Finger – Van Ryn
    (Exelby – Stralman)
With 2 extra defensive d-men in Frogren and Oreskevic.
If anything I’d hold onto Kaberle and if Stralman dominates with the Marlies or comes in as an injury replacement and shines then I’d ship Tomas off at the Trade Deadline and slide Anton into his spot. Another reason for holding onto Kaberle is the fact that he is a left handed shot, which the Leafs are definetly short in on defence!!
On a side note, has anybody heard anything on Dimitri Vorobiev??

the window for trading kaberle is up until the 15th of july i think. do i have that wrong? so if thats true, then kaberle would have to ok any trade. im thinking it would be much better to move him without restrictions or risk of losing him for nothing before july 15th. of course i could have that wrong. can anyone comment on that please?

So is grievance 100% finalized? if so..is it even likely Versteeg leaves CHI-town? In my mind i feel as though he’ll test for a large contract…but then again he may enjoy the young core in Chicago..we’ll see i guess..Any word though? Ron? Alec? Anybody? lolll

Okay its Wednesday and I am already getting a case of ‘deal withdrawal’. We have been used to great news almost twice a day here. Patience is a tough thing to swallow.

I think Stralman and Pogge are absolute keepers. All this recent posturing visa vis Pogge has only been to correct his attitude towards a lazy work ethic. If he can be taught to work hard every day with Allaire then by 2010 season our tandem will be Gustavsson and Pogge with Vesa moving on which would be wonderful if they both pan out.

Stralman is a talent and will still take a year or so but should be a very slick Kaberle replacement for us, especially given the bodyguards we now surround him with. Stralman is the reason White has to go.

Kaberle needs to go so we can accelerate Stralmans development but whether that is this years or next I dont know. Problem is we will make the playoffs next year which means Kaberles no trade will stand and we wont get anything for him which means he must go now. After he is a Free Agent he will not sign with us. His trade window is to Aug 10-15.

Pittsburgh look screwed for a deal. To me only Eaton and Dupuis look available for salary dump (~$3.4M) and they would need two more D and a back up goalie. So White is the only legitimate cap guy the Leafs have to fit into that squeeze. The only thing I would want from Pittsburgh is Eric Tangradi or Pierre Casey-Zabotel.

So if Pittsburgh is the trade partner it would be:

    Ian White for Eric Tangradi.
