The Leafs’ Darkhorse Next Season Will Be…

Jiri Tlusty.

Since the 20 year-old was drafted 13th overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Leafs fans have had high hopes that Tlusty would be a diamond in the rough, and would eventually play a crucial role in the Leafs’ top-six.

However, Tlusty has struggled somewhat at the NHL level, posting a disappointing 10 goals and 20 points in 72 games played. But, it’s not as if Tlusty has been given ample opportunity to shine, as he has been forced to play bottom-line minutes throughout his tenure with Maple Leafs thus far. Considering the type of game he plays, which does not include a robust defensive style, it’s no wonder he hasn’t progressed.

As soon as Tlusty was sent down to the Toronto Marlies last season, he flourished under the increased ice-time and responsibility. In fact, he ended up producing 25 goals and 66 points in 66 games played. It’s also worth mentioning that he scored 5 goals and 6 points in one of those games as well. Even taking a look at his stats in the 2007-08 season with the Marlies, the then 19 year-old posted 7 goals and 18 points in 14 games played. There’s no denying that, when given sufficient ice-time to produce, the Czech native is capable of posting points.

The question now is whether he is capable of translating these stats to the NHL or not. Taking into consideration the Leafs are in the rebuilding phase, I’d say next season will finally determine Tlusty’s future with the Buds. Head coach Ron Wilson is aware that he’s coming off an impressive season with the Marlies, so you can bet he’ll give Tlusty an opportunity to crack the Leafs’ top-six come training camp. However, Tlusty may find the task a little more difficult this time around, as there are a fresh new crop of players competing for the same role. Perhaps this is exactly what is needed, however, as the Leafs can now strain the less competitive players from the competitive ones.

While Tlusty lacks your prototypical “Burke-type player” tag, he’s still got the potential to become an effective second-line scoring forward in the NHL. He lacks the defensive game to make him a two-way forward, but his speed, playmaking and goal-scoring abilities could make him a valuable commodity to any team looking for an offensive-minded player. And if you think Burke won’t hesitate to trade Tlusty based off his style, you’re wrong. Sure, Burke loves the sandpaper, grit and toughness implemented to his line-up, but he also understands that offensive players are a necessity if any has aspirations to eventually win the Stanley Cup. After all, he was involved in the Mike Cammalleri sweepstakes on July 1st, was he not?

Personally, I think Tlusty will crack the Leafs’ top-six from get-go, and will surprise many observers throughout the season.

Prediction: Tlusty produces 18 goals, 51 points next season.

You stay classy, MLHS.

@tony I think BB finally got the hint from the other GM’s and is keeping his mouth shut about any possible trades or dealings.

@ B Leaf – Yes, the latter part of the season Kulemin was dynamite – both ways! He is going to be a player – trust me – hopefully the Leafs recognize this!!!
Gawd guys, I think we have a team this year!!!
Fast and ferocious! Young guns up front – and look at the “D” – Kaberle, Schenn, Komasarik, Finger, Van Ryn, Stralman, Frogren, XLB, White, in no particular order!!
Tlusty should also have a gigantic year -he has the talent and the tools – and also the “muscle” to protect him – (Orr, Komarsarik, XLB, Schenn) and don’t think that won’t help him!
And in net – Vesa Toskala – do you really not think with the Leafs “D” that Toskala will be not be much better this season? Last year at this time we were proclaiming that Toskala was a savior! Now? He will bounce back – trust me! Goal-tending will not be a problem!

I think the dark horse is going to be John Mitchell. I really see great potential in him and he might become really good.

The 3 hits in 3 seconds against colorado was the best lol. I think bringing him in was an awesome deal for both sides. Kubina will help the Thrashers but we dumped salary and got him. He hits, fights and plays solid. I love him already

Paynter: In Toskala’s first season in Toronto he kind of got screwed around by Maurice to start the year, but as that year progressed he really looked good. Last year was well not so good but injuries must have played a major role. I really feel like Toskala has a chance to be very good. Who knows how these changes will effect him and the team defensively. I love your enthusiasm for the coming season, not sure I share that yet. I guess if everything goes our way I will be pleasently surprised. I still look at this year as developmental. I would even be happy with a top five draft selection.
Having said that there are reasons to be optimistic. If Kulemin and Grabovski scores 20+ I will be happy. Will Tlusty start with the team? If so, then getting 20 goals would be great. What about Bozak? Will he make the top 6? If so does he get 15 goals as a rookie? Stahlberg may play a third line role- if so is 10-15 goals considered good. Two years from now we may see further improvement. And at least our players will feel protected.

I agree that Exelby will be popular. I definitely noticed him when the Leafs played Atlanta – he laid out a least a few guys every night with crushing hits behind the net in particular. Not as much skill as Kubina, but I love his toughness.

Exelby not a great fighter but at least he shows up. Badly beaten by Mayers last year.

my darkhorse pick is luke schenn. i think he has shown us all his defensive game. he will now turn it up offensively and score atleast 10 goals. he will show a little more creativity with the puck and pick up much more points. he will likely begin seeing a little time on the PP perhaps. he will also play some real mean in your face smash mouth hockey. he will not have to do nearly as much standing up for his teammates and spend far less time in the penalty box. he will be a very nice surprize just as he was last year when nobody expected him to stay with the team after 9 games.

Interesting about Stalberg.. I still don’t think he’ll crack the Leafs line-up, however, as some time with the Marlies will help with his developement! Bozak and Hanson will most likely beat him on the depth chart…..for now..

i’m not sure why bozak and hanson would beat stalberg on the depth chart, other than the fact that he’s a year younger than them. they got all the hype because they were free agents, but stalberg may be a better player than both of them.

I see Stahlberg playing a third line or fourth line role for now. He could get enough minutes in that role. He brings offense to his game but not powerplay type offence. Thus I think he projects to be a 20 goal third liner if everything goes right. He has tremendous size and speed. Long term I see him on a line with Dale Mitchel on the other side, and Didomenico in the middle. That could turn into a crazy good forechecking third line that can defend and score some. Of course that is a couple of years away. This year I think Stahlberg’s fate will be decided at camp. It may be that alot of our prospects start in the AHL or spend the whole season there. It could be the most interesting year to watch the Marlies since 1992 when they went to the Calder Cup finals with Pearson, Manderville, Potvin, and Crawford/Quenville as coaches.
If you think about it, we could end up with Tlusty, Bozak, Stahlberg, D Mitchell, Didomenico, Stephanovich, Hanson, Stralman, Oreskevic, and Pogge all with the Marlies to start the year. There could be some chemistry built on the farm. Alot will depend on camp and who the Leafs acquire in a potential Kaberle deal. Also if Versteeg becomes a FA I think the Leafs are all over that.
OK I am just going to dream for a moment, Leafs deal Kaberle straight up for say Kessel or equal. Versteeg, Beauchemin, and Gustavsson signs as free agents. Wow. Your top six are Versteeg, Kessell, Grabovski, Kulemin, Hagman and Stajan. You add in Orr, Mayers, J Mitchel, Blake, Stempniak, and Ponikarovski to your bottom six and you have some decent talent up front. On the blue line you have White, Schenn, Komisarek, Beauchemin, Van Ryn, Finger and XLB. In net you have Toskala and Gustavsson. Pretty cool team.

stajan is not a top six guy on any team that has hopes of being good.

a solid third line player at best……

the way blake played last year, he has to be moved to your top six b leaf…..and stajan put down to bottom six.

and we are not signing versteeg……daydreamers

Blake is a great top 6 guy. Everyone forgets that the 4 mil he make isnt the problem. Its that he is 35 and in 2-3 when he need him the most he will be on his last legs. His play will decline. If he were 25-30 I would pay 4 mil per year in a heartbeat. Hes fast, scores 25 goals, 65 points, when paired with talent(feels weird saying Yashin is talented) has scored 40 goals in the past, and plays with fire and wants to win. Look at what Brian Gionta is making, 5 mil. Who would you rather have?
