The Monster has Landed

Leafs Nation can breathe a sigh of relief.  The long wait for Swedish goalie Jonas Gustavsson’s decision is over.  Reports indicate that the tender has finally chosen the Toronto Maple Leafs after a long wooing process from a number of interested teams.

The contract is a one year deal totaling $900,000.  Many expect Gustavsson to be brought in as Vesa Toskala’s backup and be a constant source of competition for our Finnish goaltender.  Of course, there is the possibility that “the best goaltender outside of the NHL” exceeds expectations and steals the number one spot.

For those that are wondering, Jonas was signed to a one-year contract based on his “rookie” status and age (he will be in between 24 and 25, and thus is limited to one year).  From the CBA:

The period covered by the Player Contract for every
Rookie, and the number of years that such player will be in the
Entry Level System and subject to the Compensation limits shall be...

At the expiration of this contract, he will be like any other rookie.  That is, he will be a RFA with the Leafs owning his rights and able to offer him a longer and higher contract.  This is beneficial from our organization’s point of view as it forces Gustavsson to perform this year in order to earn a raise for his longer contract.

Regardless, it’s safe to say this is a move that many have been waiting for.  Not only has the drama of the process created an air of tension for hockey fans the last few weeks, many acknowledge that this could be the catalyst to a few more moves from Brian Burke.  Rumours have abounded surrounding possible deals involving Tomas Kaberle.  Some have hinted at the possibility that he would be shipped to Minnesota or Vancouver for goaltending depth (Josh Harding and Cory Schneider respectively) if Gustavsson did not sign.

However, now that we have secured the services of Jonas, one must wonder if this gives Brian Burke the leeway to ensure he gets back a top flight forward for our remaining Czech defender.  Its safe to say this move caps off a string of recent transactions by the Leafs GM that has left Leaf fans (and others) very impressed.

Cheers,

Nikhil

I have no idea about Brown, infact I dont know alot about LA, I just remember reading alot of their blogs and they loved him and talked about who they wanted to get to play with him. Sounded like he was a god really lol. I dont understand why they want to just dump Frolov so bad too, he put up similar numbers and more goals….makes less $$$$ too

Im surprised by how many ppl want to trade White, I personally think he was our MVP last year and was pretty much our top D-man especially when Kabs was out. People keep saying how our offence from our D will hurt with Kaberle gone and while i agree it wont be as good but i dont think it will be a disaster as when he was out for alot of last season it wasnt that bad.

Anything on the prospects camp? Anyone heard anything at all ?

Absolutely. I remember seeing him in an interview with Andy from Leafs TV last year, and he was all confidence – all stache. Andy couldn’t keep her eyes off it. If he was a porn star he’d be Whitey Von Stache. Incredible.

    @Josh
Your right, hes a great player. but we have like 10-12 defence. Kaberle, komi, Schenn and Beauchemin are the top 4, so out of White, Finger, MVR, Exelby Frogren and Stralman, who are we going to get best value for to bring in top 6 talent? I think its hands down White. I would rather bring in a good prospect then have him be the 5th-6th guy. Sucks, but it has to be done.
Imagine how bad a team like Detroit, or Chicago would want him knowing his talent and they are so high against the cap?

LA would not trade either Kopitar or Brown, Kopitar is super talented and Brown is an emerging power forward, I’d love to see either, but it’s not gonna happen. I am beginning to think that Kaberle may be with us come September; Burke’s asking price is high and teams may not be willing to deal much youth in return with the expected salary cap drop.

Definitly agree with pretty much all you said but if were looking for a return for the top 6 ( and i know Burke said he thinks he’ll be back next year but if someone calls you never know) Kaberle would be the best return obvi. if their is nothing there for kaberle but their is for White i agree but just saying I feel he could be a good player for the leafs for a long time at age 25 and with good 2-way defenceman play.

    WHITEY VON STACHE. incredible.

@wendel: i think that because we tend to obsessively check this site and think about what bb’s gonna do quite a bit, we have a tendency to think he isn’t going to make a move when it doesn’t happen soon enough. people were starting to think the monster wouldn’t be in b+w too. kabs will be gone before august 15th.

I would hate to see Ian white traded but if he’s in a package that would bring us a top 3 forward im all for it. We have players to play on the second line but we are lacking the proven sniper and if Ian white and some other players can be used in a deal to give us that i’m all for it

I want to see all the soft players traded. Stajan, Kaberle, White, Grabovski, Tlustly ect. Think of a 82 games season, then 2 months of playoffs. We need tough phsical players, even in the skill areas.

When is Ovechkin a UFA? (I know he likes coming to t.o. to play..)
I hate that hockey players are soo loyal to teams that draft them as opposed to the city they were born, raised and developed in. We constantly produce some of the best players in the world but will never get to see them drafted by the Leafs since I never see us finishing last in the league. They should rename the draft “crappy American cities stealing good Canadian talent”. If only hockey players were more balsy (like in the NBA) where they refuse to sign with any team who drafts them except the city they want to play for.

26 pts in 71 games last year for Whitey – and at two very different positions. He brings it every night. If his play is the reason for a shitty goal against, it’s definitely not from a lack of effort. The same can definitely not be said about Kaberle, as he’s only good at one end of the ice.
    .
I recall several times last year RW saying that he was their best defenseman for long stretches. We need to keep in mind that he’s still very young, shows great potential, and has a great coach to move him along. I could see him playing solid minutes, a great two-way game, and scoring 40-45 pts a year somewhere down the line if given good opportunities.
    .
Kaberle is a fantastic player, and it would be sad to see him wear another jersey, but he’s not part of the long-term plan no matter how you slice it – White should be.
    .
The GM that made the offer (assuming it was for White) made a good move. It’s a good time to sneak in and pull a fast one on Burke, while everyone is talking about dealing Kaberle.
