The Timetable On Wallin

Although it has been widely reported that Farjestads BK forward Rickard Wallin is considering leaving Sweden to return to the NHL, and that the team interested in bringing him back to North America is the Toronto Maple Leafs, there is no definite timetable on when he might sign.

One would assume a decision is likely to happen within the next week.   Wallin’s four year contract with Farjestads includes a clause which allows him to sign with an NHL team, but that clause is only in effect until July 15th.

Some have questioned where exactly Wallin may fit on this club.    Given his two-way prowess and decent size (6’3 200), Wallin would likely fit as a third line centre or winger, and be a key member of a penalty-killing unit that is in dire need of an upgrade.  The 29-year old’s leadership skills (he is currently the captain of Farjestads BK) would also come in handy on what is expected to be a very young group of forwards entering the 2009-10 season.

There is certainly a comfort zone for Wallin in Toronto, with former teammates Jonas Frogren (signed last year) and Jonas Gustavsson (signed this week) already part of the Maple Leafs roster.   He has had a taste of the NHL before, putting up 9 points in 15 games during the 2003-04 season with the Minnesota Wild.  Unfortunately, he did not fit the pre-lockout trapping-style of play, and after spending the next year in the AHL returned to Sweden.

Leafs GM Brian Burke certainly sees a place for Wallin in Toronto.  Speaking to AM 640 on Tuesday, Burke described what it was about Wallin that captured his interest.

“Rickard Wallin, in our opinion, could take Dominic Moore’s job from last year.  This is a Sami Pahlsson type player, who is tenacious defensively and good on faceoffs, but has offensive upside; he actually led Farjestads in scoring last year.  This is a complete hockey player.

He came over once before, tried to make it in the Minnesota organization and was unsuccessful. But to me, some of those guys — like Mikael Samuelsson who Vancouver just signed, he came over and failed and then came back — sometimes they have to come over and see exactly what is involved, and fail before they can succeed.  I think this guy can help us … this is a guy we have great interest in.”

Whether or not Wallin ultimately is signed is up to him.  The Maple Leafs have made an offer, and now Wallin is in the process of deciding whether or not he wants to return to the NHL, or remain in Sweden and continue to captain Farjestads BK.

Whichever decision he makes, we should know whether or not he is coming over by July 15th, when his escape clause in the contract with Farjestads expires.

What is with the theorem that the Leafs have too many third liners? We have a lot of bump and grind in depth but we have few skilled glue players who can pin together the traditional Burkian neanderthals. I’ve seen Wallin play a number of times he is a great two way forward with great size and reach. 9 points in 15 games is hardly slothly, especially in a Wild team and considering that Mitchell will jump over him in the case of injury Wallin seems a fairly safe investment with his penalty killing abilities and his, likely, sub million contract.

“We have a lot of bump and grind in depth”.

Well, that should double the season ticket waiting list overnite.

So just to side trake a bit, Tampa Bay is about 47.3, they just signed Hedman and thats prolly about 3 mil. That still only leaves them with 6 defence. So with another 2 defence they should be around 52-53 mil salary(not cap). They have a self imposed cap of only 45 mil, and they basically cant spend more then that. If they cant get Virbata to go somewhere(because he said hes returning to the NHL for sure) what are they gonna do? Is Vinny actually going to be with them for next year? I know he has a NTC but Im sure he wouldnt stand in the way of moving it if they had to. Whos in on it right now does anyone know?

It’s because everybody in this town needs somebody to blame. They scapegoated Murphy. Then Schneider. Ran McCabe right out of town. Oh, look the team never got better without any of them. This summer, that guy now appears to be Stajan. It’s stupid. It’s the same old thing so-called fans always do. Pick a guy, point a finger. Never mind that he was among your team leaders in scoring, or that he just had a breakout season, or that he is a steal at less than 2m. None of that matters, the bullies just want a new target and Stajan is their guy. I mean, it’s not as if they know him or anything, right?
    .
I don’t know. Last time I checked, real fans supported their team and rooted for its players. These guys are treating their own players worse than they treat the opposition – and they still call themselves fans. Un-fucking-believable.

As for the whole “they haven’t won with him in 4 years” argument?
    .
They never won anything with any of the other guys either.
    .
They haven’t won anything with Schenn, folks. Oh, I know, they are rebuilding. But he’s played on the team in a losing environment. Doesn’t that mean by your logic he should be gone?
    .
They didn’t win anything with Mats.
    .
They didn’t win anything with Roberts.
    .
They didn’t win anything with Gilmour.
    .
And they certainly didn’t win anything with Clark.
    .
Yet somehow Stajan has no heart and must be moved because they never won with him. As if one guy makes that difference … takes a team to win, folks. Not one guy. And if you don’t believe that, then you had better be willing to make the same argument you made about Stajan for those other guys I just listed off.
    .
But I’ll bet you cried like a little baby the day Dougie left town, and when Wendel was moved. Even though they never won a Cup with them in all those years, you didn’t want them to leave. Yet some how the “never won with him” label applies to Stajan in your eyes. Hypocrites.

And no I am not comparing Stajan to any of those guys. What I am saying is you can’t make the “never won with him” argument for one guy unless you are willing to make it for every player who never won, no matter how great the player. Team sport.

Never once did I say “the leafs never won anything because of Stajan”, my argument is that he does not deserve top line minutes as it has been suggested on a number of the I love matt stajan posts above; he has been a part of this team for a few years now and has done nothing of significance…50 some odd points, as a ‘career year’ for the guy, is not even close to worthy of top 6 minutes neither is worth noting him as one of our top point getters. The difference between guys like mats, gary dougie and wendel is that they were leaders, and they showed it everywhere, in the room, in the community AND on the ice, something that cannot be said about stajan, at least not on the ice it cant…anyone who knows me knows i have never been a fan of stajan, this is not a “run the guy out of town” speach, this is my opinion and just because you love a team doesnt mean you will always love all of its players…so dont start the “hypocrite” and not a true fan name calling, there’s no room for that here…one last point, how can it be said that someone is not a true fan because they dont like one of the teams players while the people saying it are saying what a “shitty team” this is…now who’s the hyprovcrite/not a true fan….

I think this whole thread needs to chill for a while. Starting to look like those we see on other well-known sites we all know about … rather not have that sort of back-and-forth starting here. It would be appreciated if the focus could stay on topic and not descend into this sort back-and-forth between commenters. I know it’s easy to do … but no one ends up looking very good for it, fellas.

the kid is only 25 and hes been in the league for a while im not saying hes a top 6 forward but why trade him.. he led all forwards in hits and led the team with 40 assists also won the most faceoffs and was 2nd to mayers in faceoff wins… why get rid of him doesnt make no sense unless its a package for a true top forward.. but matt stajan does and should have a spot on this team.
