More Trade Speculation

Picking up on the “defenseman for a forward” trade offer that Burke received the other day, ESPN’s Al Cimaglia speculated on a possible fit with the Chicago Blackhawks. After accomodating the acquisition of Hossa and the significant raises to Versteeg, Bolland and Barker, the Hawks find themselves pressed right up against the cap and still requiring a tough, stay at home defender. With Burke having up to six NHL defensive defensemen on his roster right now, Cimaglia suggested the newly acquired Garnet Exelby as a possible fit since he’s young, cheap and would fit the mold of what GM Dave Tallon is looking for to round out his defense core.

The speculated trade would send Exelby along with a pick and a prospect going to Chicago in exchange for 27 year old winger Patrick Sharp. The Thunder Bay native is a skilled, two-way winger coming off an injury-shortened 26 goal season, following a 36 goal breakout campaign the year prior. He’s under contract for a hefty $3.9M cap hit over the next 3 seasons, and so such a swap would involve Toronto taking on an additional $2.5M in salary. The Team Canada Olympic Camp invitee would be a welcome addition to a developing young core.

Considering Sharp’s age, goal scoring ability, and versatility, this is something the Leafs should definitely pounce on if given the opportunity. I’d imagine the organization would be very reluctant in surrendering its first round pick, and the Blackhawks already own Toronto’s 2010 second round pick, acquired from Montreal via the Lang and Grabovski trades, so the prospect would have to be a significant one. Lacking scoring forwards in their system, Toronto could offer Quebec sniper Mikhail Stefanovich in addition to Exelby and a 3rd round pick. Even that doesn’t seem like enough, and Chicago would likely counter by asking for AHL star Jiri Tlusty, who could step right in to replace some of Sharp’s production.

In other news, you can cross Travis Moen off the list of potential fits for the Leafs’ penalty kill unit, as the versatile two-way forward inked a three year contract with the Montreal Canadiens this afternoon.

Update: The new head coach of the Toronto Marlies will be Dallas Eakins, who was the Maple Leaf’s Director of Player Development last season. The 42 year old has experience as an NHL assistant coach with Paul Maurice two years ago.

i honestly think kaberle has lost a step or just does’nt have that bounce he used to have so to have kessels that close (if the rumours are true) if it was me kessel would be a leaf,, i’m quite sure boston what talk second rounders,, i think kaberles value goes down as he plays from here on in,, and kessels is only 23 i think..

    .
Chicago would not consider it?? how is that possible?? Their cap including bonuses is 62.3 the max cap is 56.8 so they are 5.5M over. Who said 5 years?? I see a change of Sharp and Poni which is 2 years and from the sounds of it Chicago is looking for XLB
    .
unless they swap sharp for a draft pick they are not going to get 3.5 in cap relief. Oh and the age thing could you tell me why they went with signing a 30yr old Hossa instead of a 27yr old Havlat??
    .
Pick swapping is the cost of dumping salary… have you missed those ideas?? Them getting a third back gives the perception that the potential after next year(receiving 2 UFAs) is still there.
    .
oh please give my your proposed trades from NHL 09. what trades would you do to make a cap saving trade with chicago?? because that was the discussion

I was talking about D.B and Poni getting swapped…There’s a 5 year age difference there, you know, 29-24?
As for the Havlat-Hossa issue, while Hossa didn’t show up really last playoffs, he still poured in 40 during the regular season to get Detroit into the playoffs so comfortably, and after seeing him play for Pitt two seasons ago now Chicago is still aware of his playoff potential whereas Havlat was riddled with injury problems last season and while he did play alright in the playoffs (better than Hossa for that matter), him and Hossa are not in the same tier when it comes to finishing. If you could come up with an argument as to why Havlat is a better player than Hossa, when they’re making about the same amount of money and have it be valid, I’d be impressed.

I think the idea of teams swapping first round picks and stuff midway through the summer is ridiculous…especially when you’re coming off a brutal season, as Toronto and L.A are both doing…they don’t know where they’ll end up next season…Ideally they both want to be playoff teams sooner than later, but the idea of trading picks within the same round between teams is like trading Brett Lindros for P.J Stock…so in other words, useless.

If it were up to me, I’d consider Exelby and a 3rd rounder for Sharp and their 2nd, even though I’d rather offer up either MVR or Finger…but then again we’re talking about players with contracts similar to that of Sharps, which would not help out Chicago at all. Toronto gets a top 6 forward with a questionable contract, but a top 6 forward nonetheless who isn’t too old either, as well as our second rounder back from them and Chicago gets their much-needed cap relief, a solid d-man with a very legit contract and a 3rd rounder to comphensate somewhat for losing a 2nd.

i know this would be hard to swallow but perhaps could happen

to Tor: campbell, barker, versteeg ( basically all money to get them under the cap)

    to Chi: Kaberle, exlb

    @ leaf-fan

that would be indeed hard to swallow, as it’d put Toronto over the cap, plus it would do nothing in terms of us getting rid of d-men…or if anything it’d be more difficult then to choose who stays and goes, as we’d have so many quality guys…besides Campbell being the obvious choice as he’s a very decent defensemen, making a superstars paycheck…but hey, he could rebound and be worth his contract in T.O…but that’s unlikely, to say the least.

    @ Dan

If that trade even happened then Burke would place Blake in the minors and thats all he has to do. Burke has stated over and over again he is not afraid to place money in the minors.

I personally like that. If ha has been given the financial freedom to spend and place losers in the minors than bring on the trades and signings.

Also I wish the Leafs would have offered Cammalleri the 6 mill he wanted. I find it hard to beleive that he would pick Montreal over the Leafs if the money was the same. Burke has stated that he will not overpay no matter what. It would have been nice to have Mike but Burke is right….6 mill is an over payment.

    GO Leafs GO!!
