Wednesday Morning Quick Hits – Marlies signings and more

Brian Burke has been keeping himself relatively busy since returning from his fishing trip.  While they have been all minor league signings, he has locked up three Marlies, securing depth for both our farm team and the big club.

-Alex Foster received a one year, two-way deal at the league minimum of 500 000.

-Andre Deveaux received a similar one year, two-way deal, also at 500 000.

-Darryl Boyce received a two year, two-way deal that averages out to roughly 525 000 per year.

These players will likely spend the majority of their time with the Marlies.  However, they clearly offer organizational depth and warm bodies at cheap prices in case injuries ravage the Leafs lineup.  Specifically, you should expect to see Deveaux up if any of our 4th line grinders go down for an extended period of time.  While he didn’t exactly amaze last year, Deveaux was not shy about dropping the gloves for his teammates and could put together a decent regular shift or two.

In other news, reports out of Boston indicate that they will attempt to clear cap space to keep Phil Kessel.  With the recent signing of Hunwick, the Bruins are pressed up even tighter against the cap and something has got to give.  While Kessel-hungry fans will still hold up hope that the moving piece will be the young American winger, Chiarelli is indicating that he will be retained.  Of course, we all know that in the NHL, what GMs say and what they end up doing are not always one and the same.

Cheers,

Nikhil

Okay, so Burke revealed he would trade Pogge, but said nothing on McGowan`s show. McGowan is a pussy, like i said. His interview was a joke. Burke must know Leafs nation is huge, keep the fans that pay his 25 million dollar contract informed! Im so pissed off at the lack of respect!

Are you going to tell me that nobody else is pissed off that Burke went fishing and now is going to take another week off next week. This is the most important time of the year to shape a roster THAT HAS NOT WON A DAMM THING IN 40 YEARS!!!!!!!! Instead of waiting for the phone to ring how about making something happen, get creative. I could spend millions of dollars signing players too, thats the easy part. The real measure of his tenure will be through his trades. Get to work Burkie, stop drinking all the kool-aid and lets get it done.

    @ Tony:

No… I don’t think anybody can be pissed at Burke for taking a break after a hectic draft and UFA frenzy. He did a good job and deserves the break. He has a cell phone with him… he’s just killing time until the real offers for Kaberle come in just before the 15th!

Tony the reshaping is pretty much done so relax. I am pretty sure Burkes cell phone works where he is on holidays and I am pretty sure all the other GMs have each others cell phone numbers.

    Now another killer trade idea:

    Here goes:

Eklund to the KHL in exchange for nothing.

Next: Mitchell and White to Phoenix for Turris and a 2nd. (I wanna keep Stajan)
Then: Kaberle to Dallas for Benn OR Glennie and a 1st.

Then: I would go to training camp and watch my prospects all blossom.

I think KHL needs to get a large compensation for taking on a RETARD DUMP!… any chance we can throw Gary Buttman in on that deal?

When we’re trading Kaberle we can put one of these players in the deal because there not in our long term commitment.

    Ponikarsky
    Stajan
    Mayers
    Stempniak
    Blake
    Hagman
We could even put in White or a prospect if we’re getting a better prospect back.

man the bruins say they will make room for kessel.. so im thinking if we cant get kessel according to cap central there 2.66 million or so over the cap.. there loaded down the middle with savard, bergeron krejci and kessel.. to me bergeron is the odd man out making 4.75mill with concousion history and point totals not being there.

Also the right side has ryder, wheeler, kobasew and recchi.. he’re i think wheeler is the odd man out he didnt have a single point in the playoffs.. and his cap hit is 2.825. so him and bergeron together = 7.575

so the trade could potentially be ian white, stajan and pogge(as rask is a rfa and will most likely get a raise and thomas is signed long term.) for bergeron, wheeler, and joe colbourne

The bruins would get 4.975 in cap space so they can sign kessel they also get a cheaper centermen who can play third or fourth line or even fill in on the second line, they get a cheap youn dmen in ian white and a goalie prospect.

Toronto gets a two top 6 forwards and a top prospect

    Hey guys,

I work at Bruce Power and BB had a number of interesting comments. First, Pogge has signed his one year qualifying offer and WILL be traded – BB has promised this to him, since the monster was signed. Second, he has stuck by his guns regarding Kaberle – likely will not trade him, since 4.25 mil is so cheap for a player of his worth. How would he replace him, he wondered. Thirdly, I asked him about Kadri and he said that Nazem has informed him he intends to make the Leafs this year. Burke’s comment was he has about a snowball’s chance in hell of doing so, but he loves the drive displayed.

It was a really fun event for those of us rather north of TO. I’m an authorized nuclear operator in training working out of Bruce B, so it was lots of fun for him to come and tour around as well.

OH I almost forgot, somebody asked about Bobby Ryan, since he’s a relatively local boy (played in Owen Sound). Burke said he cannot answer that, because it would be tampering, but he is NOT looking into it (wink wink). He further said he scored 30 goals in 60 games, 216 pouds 6’3, no way he’d look good in a Leaf’s jersey. Here’s hoping he can pull it off!

    @ Alex Austman:

That is really cool that Burke talked to you guys like that. Burke will have to package Pogge with anything to get a decent return. I think it’s really a shame that he is going to go, he’s VERY YOUNG for a goalie and I would see this as a big mistake for Burke unless he gets something very attractive back in the deal.

Bobby Ryan is an intriguing thought… I could see Burke trying to pull the trigger on a trade with ANA since they have lost Pronger. Kaberle would have to be included to bring back such a good young player though. Unless we are moving Grabovski or Kulemin, I don’t see a package of Pogge, MVR, White + being enough to bring back Ryan.

@ black hawk.. i know but they have so many good young players why not give up schenn for a shot at the playoffs schenn probably wont be a part of this team for two more years.. the top 3 lines on this team are solid… and schenn isn’t even proven yet
if they gave up teubert and schenn for kaberle they’d be set.

The teams that need a puck moving DMan are:

Boston, Dallas, Phoenix, Florida, Colorado, Columbus, Vancouver and Toronto

So each of these teams are destinations for Kaberle. My other suggestion is to trade Kaberle to Toronto for free! Then Toronto would have a premier puck moving DMan but then they would have to move 1 or 2 of their other D.

But yeah! He was very candid. I’ve watched numerous press conferences where he’s fairly quiet about his intentions, but he was completely open and honest today. Not one question did he duck and weave (except the Bobby Ryan issue, due to tampering he said). A real class act. And as for Pogge… I agree. Sort of a mess up all around. If it were up to me I’d keep him in the minors another year, but I think Burke places a little more value on the players as people with goals and careers than I do.

PS If my previous comment sound arrogant I apologize, that wasn’t my intention. Just wanted to make perfectly clear that this is what he said, not what I am speculating.
