Pogge Signed

The Leafs (former?) goalie of the future is officially back for another year with the club.  With the signing of Jonas Gustavsson, media and fans alike decreed Pogge’s chance to charge in and become the Leafs saviour had all but run out.  Of course, it’s far too early to completely give up on a tender with Justin’s potential, and Brian Burke earlier stated his intentions to qualify the 23 year old without any hesitation.

Reports indicate that Pogge has been signed to a one year, two-way deal valued at just over 600 000.  It’s quite clear that this is Pogge’s last chance to show Leafs management that he can play consistently at a big league level, or he’ll likely be strutting his stuff in different colours next season.  Pogge will begin the year with the Marlies once again, with incumbent James Reimer providing a serious push for the starting job on the Leafs farm team.

There is hope that the inclusion of Francois Allaire as the organization’s goaltending coach will be a boon to the struggling youngster.  Pogge clearly has the tools to be an impact goaltender at the NHL level, but many have mused about a lack of mental fortitude that has hindered his development.  Furthermore, much has been said about whether the young Canadian had a fair chance with the Leafs last year, as he was brought up sporadically and often left wondering where his defense was.  Regardless, the fact of the matter is that Justin will have to show some definitive progress this season if he hopes that his once-bright future in the NHL can be set back on track.

Cheers,

Nikhil

    That and he had a lower PPG number then he has in a while. Overall is was a bit of an off year for him. If he plays 82 games next year and scores 50-60 points like he can, his trade value will be wayyyyy higher then right now, and he will be on the top of teams lists. He was overshadowed a bit by Bouwmeester this year

    Kaberle isn’t an unknown, and he’s only 31 so he’s hardly on the “decline”, everyone with any hockey knowledge should know what he could do for a good team. Even coming off a ‘poor’ year Kaberle is a consistent performer.

    His value may go up if there’s a team desparate for his qualities midway through the season up to the deadline. Aside from that his quality should be high right now because of the quality and length of his contract.

    In reality I think his value is dependant on the teams percieved requirements for his services rather than his season to season performance, which seems fairly consistent.

    Pogge should definitely stay, in my mind. Give Allaire a chance to work with him. He’s only 23 and was thrown in net behind a very porous team last year. Just think of the pressure on that kid. I saw a game from right behind the glass last year, in which Pogge got the start. The kid is huge. If Allaire can influence Justin with some control and mental fortitude, we’ve got an asset on our hands.
    .
    If Pogge’s gone, who’s going to push Gustavsson? There should always be another goalie in the rearview mirror gunning for your spot on the team. Is Reimer the guy to do that? Given the lack of attention he’s gotten during his time with MLSE, I highly doubt it.
    .
    We need to remember that Gustavsson is completely unproven at this level. Don’t get me wrong, I am very impressed that Burke was able to land him, and I’m extremely excited to see him play this year. But, there hasn’t been this much hype about a goalie in T.O. in a very long time. Just think of the pressure he’s going to be under starting a Saturday night game at the ACC. This kid could easily be a flop as he could a saviour.
    .
    All I’m saying is that, to me, trading Pogge at this point would signal way too much surety that Gustavsson really is going to be the next man in net for T.O. Keeping Pogge is a very low risk move. What bad can come of it? None. Burke will get virtually nothing in return for him, so why deal him?
    .
    Let’s look at the last few years of Pogge’s career. He was fresh of a dominant performance at the WJC; then he was signed by the Leafs; then he managed to be the one to stay with the franchise at the expense of another young goaltending prospect (Rask, horrible move, but I digress). He’s spent the past couple seasons riding the high of knowing he was the “future goalie of the Leafs”. All of a sudden that comfort is squarely in doubt. I’d love to see how he reacts to some tangible adversity.

    Just from reading the title, I hope the signing is to give him one last chance to become the future goalie of the Leafs.
    What makes Jonas Gustavsson such a Superstar?? Cause he won a Swedish Elite Legaue title with a stacked team infront of him? Give me a break, until a goalie steals a Series like Cujo or a Stanley Cup like Roy, they haven’t proven anything in my books.
    @ 2 minutes for looking so good:
    Why would Burke be talking to Bruce Power workers??

    burke says kaberla wont move this could be a stratgey to get other gms to give us what we need a top 6 forward a top prospect a draft pick if burke does not get this return then kaberla will stay a leaf then plan b would be to move another 1 or 2 dman but i dont see many trades are team is pretty much set maybe 1 blockbuster trade or 1/2 minor?

    Im actually really excited to see what Pogge can do this year. Im sure either Toskala or Gustavsson will be hurt or something during the year so he might even get a call up or two

    That is certainly a concern regarding Gustavsson. Might be similar to Pogge in the WJC. Looked phenomenal, but had a phenomenal team playing in front of him.

    IT’S OFFICIAL;

    BURKE IS TRADING POGGE;

    “Pogge’s a good kid, but it just didn’t work out for him in Toronto,” he said. “I assured him I would find him somewhere to play this year.”

    Kaberle & Pogge for Hodgson, Schneider, and a second round pick. Then deal Toskala away mid season.

    @danvertising

    I disagree on the leafs not being patient, in fact.. I think they’ve been overly patient to a fault throughout the years. Past regimes have been quick to mortgage the future for a quick fix, but that’s not the case here.

    Also, the article stated that Pogge needed to be convinced a trade would come in order to even sign his qualifying offer.

    Pogge is a career AHL’er at best IMHO, cut the fat early and leave room for true talent.
