Pogge Signed

The Leafs (former?) goalie of the future is officially back for another year with the club.  With the signing of Jonas Gustavsson, media and fans alike decreed Pogge’s chance to charge in and become the Leafs saviour had all but run out.  Of course, it’s far too early to completely give up on a tender with Justin’s potential, and Brian Burke earlier stated his intentions to qualify the 23 year old without any hesitation.

Reports indicate that Pogge has been signed to a one year, two-way deal valued at just over 600 000.  It’s quite clear that this is Pogge’s last chance to show Leafs management that he can play consistently at a big league level, or he’ll likely be strutting his stuff in different colours next season.  Pogge will begin the year with the Marlies once again, with incumbent James Reimer providing a serious push for the starting job on the Leafs farm team.

There is hope that the inclusion of Francois Allaire as the organization’s goaltending coach will be a boon to the struggling youngster.  Pogge clearly has the tools to be an impact goaltender at the NHL level, but many have mused about a lack of mental fortitude that has hindered his development.  Furthermore, much has been said about whether the young Canadian had a fair chance with the Leafs last year, as he was brought up sporadically and often left wondering where his defense was.  Regardless, the fact of the matter is that Justin will have to show some definitive progress this season if he hopes that his once-bright future in the NHL can be set back on track.

Cheers,

Nikhil

Maybe pogge is signed because Toskala is on his way out. There is absolutely no reason to believe that he will not play better with better guys in front. And did you notice that Pogge is really the north american version of the monster? Not in stats but in stature and style? Remember Patty Roy? Both are going to excel under Allaire and will battle for leafs number 1 spot after this year. One Euro, and One Canadian. Toskala can go to another team as a UFA for more than we should even consider offering him and the monster and pogge will be signed together for less. Solid FUTURE in net and on the point, the rest will come, no worries.

Are you guys idiots? the quote is from the Owensond Sun Times.. Why the hell would Burke do an announcement from a two bit newspaper in butt f##k Ontario? someone is playing with your heads.. Pooge is going nowhere..we have two netminders in the majors and two in the minors.. if things go well for toskala, The Monstor, Pogge, Reimer (sp) then Toskala is gone at the trade deadline and the Moster moves up to 1st, Pogge is back up and Reimer(sp) is starter for the Marlies..

Guys, just because we signed Pogge shouldn’t mean the he, or any other goalie is being moved.
    .
We need goaltending depth. Something we are very thin on right now. By moving any of them, we seriously shoot ourselves, unless we’re getting a solid goalie prospect or proven NHLer back.
    .
Pogge’s game is way ahead of Reimer. Reimer needs to earn a starting role with the Marlies by outplaying Pogge. Toskala can’t be moved right now, he has no trade value coming off a weak season and surgery. He can build his value up as team’s want to see how well he performs post-surgery.
    .
Gustavsson, he could be our next #1. Or he may not, only time will tell.

    @Changeisgood
My gut: Pogge is a sign and trade situation where he will be packaged with a D whether it be White, Kaberle or MVR (my list of possible trade candidates). I don’t see a future for Pogge here with the Leafs. I think Paynter is on the right track although I disagree on having Stralman,
Mitchell and Grabovski in the hate to trade but would category. Also, Hanson is in the almost untouchable category. Let’s keep our youth at all cost and develop them properly.

why would Burke announce any new developements in this venue? Oh yes lets announce this in Owensound.. and OH! by the way, no other news sources are around for this.. and to be honest I could not find this in the link.. I am sure Owensound gets so many scoops over the other news outlets.. I see we are getting trolls in MLHS now.. I imagine Burke gives a sh*t if BP is a sponsor for the Leafs in this case.. I imagine our next announcement will be at the BMO…
    Sad…

@Ryan Alexander – Yea, I agree with you about Komisarek in a way – last minute move up on my part.
@B Leaf – It won’t bother me either if Kaberle does NOT get traded, but think that his value will never be higher than now. Cheap contract with two years left – 30 years old – We seem to keep putting off trading him – from last summer – to last year’s trade deadline – now then August 15 – perhaps next year’s trade deadline, or next year’s draft. At some point his value is going to go down – unless he’s here for the long haul.
Perhaps that wouldn’t be bad – still I deal him IF there is a reasonable offer on the table! We don’t want ro risk losing him for diddly squat! But I didn’t say “give him away!”
Any GM out there whose job (and franchise?) may be on the line to make the playoffs – and who are borderline (hello Columbus, Phoenix, LA, Buffalo, Nashville, Florida, Atlanta, Dallas, St. Louis, Edmonton, Minny, etc.) must have extreme interest in a “cheap” player who can run a power play with the best – bar none!
Maybe we should have a pool on the date Kaberle gets traded – from today until June 2011 – my pick would be August 7, 2009! Hopefully Kabs likes the heat – or rain!

@AussieLeaf – interesting the different points of view, eh? Where would you put Stralman, Mitchell and Grabovski – up?
Kind of forgot about Hansen – sure hope you are right – I would probably have him one tier down – but one or the other! It will be very interesting to see how Hansen develops this season! He certainly has potential! Potential you don’t deal unless you have to!

The Leafs would be downright stupid to move Pogge. He’s 23! Look around the league – how many goaltenders come in to the league before they are 27 and put up a wall? How many do it on one of the worst defensive teams in the league? He has no value and we lose nothing by keeping him. He will be kept. The one year contract is just to push him.

Have you read Berger’s blog? I love how he shreds kaberle’s defensive game then praises him for his puck-moving/hockey smarts. Has anybody told Berger that Kaby is an OFFENSIVE defenceman and he is among the best at what he does.

I found the quote.(sorry).. but wow that is a very obscure quote.. “I will find him somewhere to play” nowhere does this say out of the organization.. only he will have a place to play.. it is the writers premise that it is not within the TO organization..it would take a very one sided view point to assume this ment he is being traded.. I still feel that what TO will do is go with Koskala as 1st.. Monster as back up.. then in the minors it will be Pogge and Remier (sp). With the help of Francois Allaire why would you give up on a young, potentially great, goaltender before he even starts to work with him? You have a butterfly goally with the best buterfly coach in the world and you trade him??? WHY?

Trade Pogge, are u all nuts, 23 years old, tons of potential, a goalie coach that suits his style, big, butterfly, athletic…When JFJ traded Rask everyone went nuts, is Rask in the NHL, NO, then take the fact that no goalies last season looked awful good in front of that D…this year our D will be very good, Toskala will be solid, so will Gustafsson, Pogge, won’t get a snif… Ur Goalie is only as good as the team in front of him…If BB has patience and brains he will hold tight on Pogge, and within two years he will have a goaltender to trade for a front line forward, Vesa Toskala…

Dude I am with you on that one. Just because a couple of young tenders in the league have made their respective clubs everybody thinks all young goaltender can, I hope BB doesn’t trade him and the kid proves that to be the best decision . I am sure he could make a statement like that in an area like that cause it wouldn’t get the media attention like it would at the press conference in T.O.

sorry friend.. but do you think Burke likes to shy away from the lime light? I love his style.. we need that in TO from our GM..Burke has never seen a mic he has not liked..if he wanted to send this message it would be front and center and not in the background.. it would be in lights in downtown TO..Burke is loud and brash but he is straight foreword and honest…what he thinks he says.. for good or bad he says it.. I think we have had too may management people who were full of sh#t and said whatever the fans wanted to hear..we now have a GM wo will tell us the truth even if we do not like it..that in itself is a step forward…

Although it’s admirable if Burke has decided Pogge is not going to cut it and doesn’t figure in Leafs’ future plans, that he has promised to find him another team, I don’t believe it’s the smart thing to do. First of all,it’s not like we’re going to get a good return for him in a trade at this point. We’ve invested a draft choice(3rd-04),3 years of salary and training, and traded(gave away) Rask instead of him. As stated by many others,as a goalie,he’s too young to give up on yet,he still could turn out to be an NHL goalie. He has all the tools, and now Allaire to help him out.How would we feel if he IS let go,and 2 years from now we have to watch both him and Rask playing 1st string for other teams? Also, our goalie depth in the system is not exactly deep. And finally, everybody thinks and hopes that Gustavvson will be good/great, but this is not guaranteed, and remains to be seen………..@ Paynter Graham – You might as well clasify Komisarek as “untouchable”,I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that he has a no movement clause in his contract.Thought we would never allow that again!

OOPS!! I just read elsewhere that Komi’s contract does not contain a true NMC.Apparently, each year,he just has to submit a list of 12 teams he would accept a trade to.That’s not so bad.

Pogge should be our Marlies started, and I hope we keep Kaberle. I have been thinking alot and it just makes sence to keep him. He didnt have a bad year last year but far from his best. There are two things that can happen:

–1 We make the playoff = If Kaberle helps up into the playoffs that great and we keep him because were already a playoff team, so with him, Komi, Beauchemin and Schenn headlining our defence, we are a few forwards away from serious contenders
–2 We miss the playoffs, and he obviously will play alot better then he did last year, drives his stock higher, and we re-visit the trade talk.
—-Take it a step futher, and think….next year the only other good puckmovers are Gonchar (36 years old) and Lidstrom (40 years old). I doubt Pittsburg and Detroit would let either of them walk (thats if they are both still producing good numbers). That leaves Kaberle a slim pickins for whoever wants a good puck mover. No Bouwmeester, no Pronger, just Kaberle. I hope we keep him, and by the end of next year we will have a better idea if Stralman is ready to step in our top 4 or not too

Pardon my french, but to trade Pogge or let him go before The deadline next year would be stunned. We have a #1 goalie who is coming off surgery. A #2 who is unproven, and injuries happen – sometimes in bunches.
With the new Marlies situation, new goalie coach and competition between the pipes, everything is in place for two young goalies to improve their game and offer support to a Marlies team that could challenge for a championship if the defense is sound. Something that will pay dividends for all prospects who play for a winner, prior to a crack at the NHL.
    Good move signing Pogge.

    Dave Moore;

Pogge hasn’t proved shit yet either.

so if you feel that strong about Toskala and Gustuffson, maybe the leafs should sign a veteran goalie. If Burke said he will find him a new home, he will. Burkie hasn’t lied to us yet.

    Gentlemen,

Tomas Kaberle’s trade value today, is at an all time low. Why would Burke trade him right now? It would be unbelievably poor asset management. Kabby said late last season that he would not oppose a trade if the Leafs no longer wanted him. My guess is, he puts a list together, and we go from there.

Kaberle will be traded, just not right now. Burke’s comments in today’s interview, are a strong indication (as someone mentioned above) that he will be playing with Toronto again this season. Once this guy gets playing again, and other teams start feeling the wrath of a Kaberle-Beauchemin powerplay, trust me, it won’t be long before opposing teams are beating down our door.
