Monday Blues – Update: Leafs acquire Primeau for Stralman
Kicking off the week with another update on a whole lot of nothing around the NHL: The Leafs get ripped in ESPN’s Ultimate Team Standings, P.J. Axelsson signs with Frolunda, CBS Sports assigns offseason grades for the Northeast Division, and Kaberle bought out?
- Update #1: Rumors of a Calgary -Toronto trade involving Anton Stralman.
- Update #2: RDS confirms it. Stralman and Stuart to Calgary for Wayne Primeau. What the heck?
- Update #1: NHL player agent, Ben Hankinson, is twittering that the Maple Leafs have traded defenseman Anton Stralman along with the newly acquired Colin Stuart to the Calgary Flames in exchange for centerman Wayne Primeau. Good Lord.
- Update #2: RDS confirms that the trade is legit. What the heck?
- The Aftonbladet is reporting that former Bruins forward P.J. Axelsson has signed a 4 year deal to play for Frolunda of the SEL. You can cross off another potential option for the Leafs penalty kill unit.
- CBS Sports is handing out offseason report cards for the Northeast teams, and the Toronto Maple Leafs received the second highest in the division with a “B”. The writer proceeds to criticize the fact that the Leafs “did not have a credible offense last season, and haven’t done much to change that over the summer”. Strange words to direct at the league’s 10th highest scoring team. Speaking of credibility…
- Alright, that was a dirty line to include in the intro snippet, but it appears as though Carolina has bought out defenseman Frantisek Kaberle. At 35 years of age and coming off a disappointing season in which he played just 30 NHL games, it’s difficult to envision him landing anything more than a veteran role for an AHL team. If Burke plans on keeping Tomas around, perhaps it might be a nice move to bring his brother into the organization to shore up the Marlies defense core and provide a little extra depth.
- In the 2009 ESPN Ultimate Team Standings, the Toronto Maple Leafs find themselves ranked 120th out 122 NHL, NFL, NBA and MLB teams as determined by “how much franchises give back to the fans in exchange for all the time, money and emotion the fans invest in them.” The rankings are based on criteria such as a “Bang for Buck” index, ownership, affordability, stadium experience, players, coaching and title track. Their highest ranking was 58th overall for coaching, and not surprisingly, they were deemed the least affordable ticket of the 4 major sport leagues in North America. Ouch. The Toronto Blue Jays find themselves in 34th, while the Toronto Raptors are in 105th.
- Speaking of the Blue Jays, those of you who to switch over to “baseball mode” for the summer are well aware of the ongoing situation with the possible trade of franchise pitcher Roy Halladay. A lot of parallels to be drawn between the Kaberle situation and the Halladay situation: a pair of stars being dangled as their franchises head in a different direction, the desire for “blow me away” type offers, looming trade deadlines, and a couple of GM’s who are not expecting anything to happen.
- Lastly, Lyle Richardson of The Hockey News suggests the Leafs should package Pogge together with a defenseman like Ian White in order to acquire a scoring forward. The question is: What team could use a defenseman along with a young goalie prospect? My gut still tells me Colorado is the best fit.

Well this doesn’t interest me except that I think that where F. Kab lands, helps determine where T. Kabs would like to be traded.
July 27th, 2009 at 6:35 pm
what happened about belfour wanting to come back ?
July 27th, 2009 at 6:36 pm
Hey Alex.. Any bones to throw us regarding the leafs that don’t include the potential to pick up F. Kaberle for depth?
July 27th, 2009 at 6:37 pm

July 27th, 2009 at 6:46 pm
@ Glimpus, they obviously mean the late 90′s – early 00′s version of Keith Primeau.
July 27th, 2009 at 6:46 pm
@Glimpus
Is there a link for that “rumour”?
.
@Alex
Who do you see coming back, in your opinion? Someone like Svatos? Hedjuk? Wolski?
July 27th, 2009 at 6:47 pm
@Glimpus, sorry about the lateness of my reply. i took too long to leave a comment! =P
July 27th, 2009 at 6:48 pm
I hope that trade isn’t true. Primeau is 33 is he not? I read that article too Alex, Who do you think Colorado would trade for white? I would keep white over svatos.
July 27th, 2009 at 6:48 pm
It’s OK lgweekend.. I’m a little worried about this, if its indeed true. We should be getting more back than just another Grinder.. I mean c’mon. We’re stacked with these guys.
July 27th, 2009 at 6:49 pm
I’d do White and Pogge for Wolski.
Svatos is injury riddled is he not?
July 27th, 2009 at 6:51 pm
If its not confirmed here, TSN or Sportsnet, then it Bull Shhhhh!!!!!
July 27th, 2009 at 6:51 pm

Its Wayne . Colin Stuart???
July 27th, 2009 at 6:53 pm
“I’d do White and Pogge for Wolski” so would any GM in the nhl if it was even fathomable
July 27th, 2009 at 6:53 pm
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
July 27th, 2009 at 6:53 pm
****! Alex. ****!
There’s gotta be something majorly wrong with Stralman’s attitude if it’s true.. how is Primeau an upgrade over even just Stuart?
July 27th, 2009 at 6:54 pm
Relax, guys. That Calgary trade can’t possibly be real.
July 27th, 2009 at 6:55 pm
Oh my god, it’s true.

July 27th, 2009 at 6:56 pm
OK.. sooooooooooooooooooo. Burke is building his bottom 6. At the expense of potentially very good talent.
This makes no sense.. no sense at all.

July 27th, 2009 at 6:59 pm
PLEASE tell me that trade isn’t true. that’s a brutal rip-off if true… 2 young players (one with lots of potential) for a guy who hasn’t scored in over a year and hasn’t even played more than 52 games since the lockout?!
July 27th, 2009 at 6:59 pm
something is wrong. three way deal? WP cant b e staying. No way
July 27th, 2009 at 7:00 pm
What the hell?!?!?!? This trade sucks. How can we trade Stralman for this Primeau?
July 27th, 2009 at 7:00 pm
is this a joke???????????
July 27th, 2009 at 7:00 pm
THAT SUCKS
July 27th, 2009 at 7:01 pm

July 27th, 2009 at 7:01 pm
Makes no sense at all. Who is wayne primeau anyway? Maybe they got him to wipe visors or something. Seems expensive for a player over the hill
July 27th, 2009 at 7:02 pm
This **** is ******!
There’s gotta be more to this..
July 27th, 2009 at 7:02 pm
This better not be fucking true. If so, file this under ANOTHER LEAF GM TRADES YOUNG PROSPECT FOR USELESS VETERAN!!
.
“the Toronto Maple Leafs find themselves ranked 120th out 122 NHL, NFL, NBA and MLB teams as determined by “how much franchises give back to the fans”
.
With trades like this I’m shocked we’re not 122.
July 27th, 2009 at 7:02 pm
are you kidding me??? seriously? if so this deserves a explanation
July 27th, 2009 at 7:02 pm
…terrible
July 27th, 2009 at 7:02 pm
Guh?
July 27th, 2009 at 7:03 pm
relax guys. can anybody do a check and see the trades that Burke has made before or in the past? and if so, has he been fleeced?
.
then again, at the same time, didn’t someone mention in another article that BB is on a vacation with his family, and Nonis was taking over GM duties till Burke gets back?
.
oh noes =(
July 27th, 2009 at 7:03 pm
If this is true, I’ve lost hope… Stralman + White > Kaberle…
July 27th, 2009 at 7:03 pm
TSN has now confirmed the Calgary trade as well per their newcast.
July 27th, 2009 at 7:03 pm
All summer I have been behind everything that BB has done…but this makes no sense…..there are plenty of guy of Wayne cut left via free agency….what the heck is he doing giving up one of our best (and i know that is a stretch) prospects?
This is a crazy move…
July 27th, 2009 at 7:04 pm
@ THE KING – Detroit was/is looking for scoring depth after losing Hossa, Sams and possibly Hudler and they’re supposedly in the running for Pogge, but still can’t see where this benefits the Leafs.
July 27th, 2009 at 7:04 pm
unless there is a first and second coming our way wtf????
July 27th, 2009 at 7:04 pm
There has to be a pick invloved, what is the contract status for Primeau?
July 27th, 2009 at 7:05 pm
This has to be a prelude to something else. Primeau is not long for the Leafs. Possibly a buyout or release to clear cap room.
July 27th, 2009 at 7:05 pm
What happened to the youth movement? I just don’t get this move. I know the Leafs need to trim the roster of dmen, but this one’s puzzling. I though Stralman showed promise.
July 27th, 2009 at 7:05 pm
I just heard on AM640 guys.. 2nd round pick from Calgary involved. and the 7th from Toronto.
