Monday Blues – Update: Leafs acquire Primeau for Stralman

Kicking off the week with another update on a whole lot of nothing around the NHL: The Leafs get ripped in ESPN’s Ultimate Team Standings, P.J. Axelsson signs with Frolunda, CBS Sports assigns offseason grades for the Northeast Division, and Kaberle bought out?

  • Update #1: Rumors of a Calgary -Toronto trade involving Anton Stralman.
  • Update #2: RDS confirms it. Stralman and Stuart to Calgary for Wayne Primeau. What the heck?
  • Update #1: NHL player agent, Ben Hankinson, is twittering that the Maple Leafs have traded defenseman Anton Stralman along with the newly acquired Colin Stuart to the Calgary Flames in exchange for centerman Wayne Primeau. Good Lord.
  • Update #2: RDS confirms that the trade is legit. What the heck?
  • The Aftonbladet is reporting that former Bruins forward P.J. Axelsson has signed a 4 year deal to play for Frolunda of the SEL. You can cross off another potential option for the Leafs penalty kill unit.
  • CBS Sports is handing out offseason report cards for the Northeast teams, and the Toronto Maple Leafs received the second highest in the division with a “B”. The writer proceeds to criticize the fact that the Leafs “did not have a credible offense last season, and haven’t done much to change that over the summer”. Strange words to direct at the league’s 10th highest scoring team. Speaking of credibility…
  • Alright, that was a dirty line to include in the intro snippet, but it appears as though Carolina has bought out defenseman Frantisek Kaberle. At 35 years of age and coming off a disappointing season in which he played just 30 NHL games, it’s difficult to envision him landing anything more than a veteran role for an AHL team. If Burke plans on keeping Tomas around, perhaps it might be a nice move to bring his brother into the organization to shore up the Marlies defense core and provide a little extra depth.
  • In the 2009 ESPN Ultimate Team Standings, the Toronto Maple Leafs find themselves ranked 120th out 122 NHL, NFL, NBA and MLB teams as determined by “how much franchises give back to the fans in exchange for all the time, money and emotion the fans invest in them.” The rankings are based on criteria such as a “Bang for Buck” index, ownership, affordability, stadium experience, players, coaching and title track. Their highest ranking was 58th overall for coaching, and not surprisingly, they were deemed the least affordable ticket of the 4 major sport leagues in North America. Ouch. The Toronto Blue Jays find themselves in 34th, while the Toronto Raptors are in 105th.
  • Speaking of the Blue Jays, those of you who to switch over to “baseball mode” for the summer are well aware of the ongoing situation with the possible trade of franchise pitcher Roy Halladay. A lot of parallels to be drawn between the Kaberle situation and the Halladay situation: a pair of stars being dangled as their franchises head in a different direction, the desire for “blow me away” type offers, looming trade deadlines, and a couple of GM’s who are not expecting anything to happen.
  • Lastly, Lyle Richardson of The Hockey News suggests the Leafs should package Pogge together with a defenseman like Ian White in order to acquire a scoring forward. The question is: What team could use a defenseman along with a young goalie prospect? My gut still tells me Colorado is the best fit.

I think Stajan stays, hard worker good cap hit, good faceoffs pretty good stats last year (better or similar to Jordan Staal’s with a lowr cap hit)

It is obvious that Burke has decided to keep White over Stralman. I think that this is the right move. If someone had suggested last week to trade White for a second round pick, many on this site would have been falling over themselves to urge the trade. Instead of trading White, a proven NHL performer, Burke traded a player who would not crack the lineup on a regular basis.

    Compare the stats

If Primeau stays healthy he is deffinately BB’s type of checking line centre.

    HOLY CRAP GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I FIGURED IT OUT. CALGARY HOLDS THE LEAFS SECOND ROUND PICK VIA THE GRABOVSKI TRADE AND TANGUAY TRADE. (MAYBE, TOO BUSY POSTING THIS TO DOUBLE CHECK)

THE ONLY REASON THE LEAFS COULD WANT THEIR SECOND BACK IS THEY NEED IT FOR AN OFFER SHEET, AS THE COMPANESATION PICKS MUST BE YOUR OWN. (AGAIN, I BELIEVE)

The flames obviously wanted Stralman more than we wanted Primeau so im guessing they called us.

I agree that in Calgary Strallman will be at least 7th, didn’t they also sign Kronwall?

    Chilko Says:

This is a good deal. Stralman’s future for at least the next two years was the Marlies, period, with the depth this new defense is showing on paper. I can’t find the date for his entry level contract to expire, but I’ll bet it is next year. My guess is he threatened to go home to Sweden and may still do that if it looks like he’s going spend more time in the AHL.
So the Leafs traded an unhappy prospect(who was told he would play on the big club when he came over a couple of years ago), a 7th round pick(who rarely if ever pay off) and Stuart(a prospect that Atlanta gave up on), for Primeau and a 2nd rounder.
The only one out of all that was traded that can play in the NHL is Primeau.
As for Stralman, all prospects whether defensemen or forwards show way more promise than Stralman has at this point in his career and his age.
Oh, he may one day play full time in the NHL, and pop a few points in, but he will never be a “star”, if he was he would have shown us more by now.

ALL I THINK ABOUT THIS TRADE IS BURKE MUST OF BEEN DRINKING A BIT ON HIS FISHING TRIP BECAUSE THIS ONE DOES NOT MAKE ANY SENCE………….I AM LOST FOR WORDS ON THIS ONE. STRALMAN 22 YEARS OLD……….THIS GONNA HURT FOR A WHILE. HE IS GONNA COME BACK TO HAUNT US.

    danvertising Says:

Anyone who thinks this is a good deal is delusional.
    .
We all sit here and say “If we don’t get a good offer for Kaberle, why trade him? Let’s just keep him”. But we have no problem giving up on a promising prospect and overpaying for a 2nd round pick two drafts from now… When we need a second round pick in 2010.

    Garrett Bauman Says:

Lyle Richardson may be onto something. Thinking St Louis, word is they are quite interested in Ian White. Some suspect that Patrick Berglund may be available.

Where the hell have you been?!

    Charlie Says:

    And Garrett,

How can we land Berglund for White? Makes no sense. St. Louis has the cap room, so it’s not like they need to dump anything.

    Wags Says:

    A) Strahlman was 9th on the depth chart…
    B) Strahlman would have to clear waivers to be sent to the Marlies
    C) Strahlman (Tor’s 5th round selection) for a 2nd Round Pick
    D) Stuart for Primeau (even)
    E) Question, will Strahlman be a top 4 D-man in the NHL? If so or if not, thats why u trade in the NHL, its a gamble, as is the 2nd Round Pick…

I feel this trade allows BB to move a soft forward by the name of Stajan, along with something else, for a top six forward.
