Question Period – Leafs Edition

Nothing much happening with the Toronto Maple Leafs these days, so here are some questions to generate some conversation:

1) Do you think Tomas Kaberle will be traded before August 15th, or will he be in the lineup against the Montreal Canadiens on October 1st?

2) In the event of Kaberle being dealt, what type of return do you think the Leafs would get? What type of player/package specifically?

3) Do you think the Leafs should target any of the remaining Unrestricted Free Agents? Petr Sykora, Todd Bertuzzi, Alex Tanguay and Nikolai Zherdev are among the top remaining UFA’s.

4) The Leafs still have a profusion of defensemen on the roster. Do you think Burke will deal some of them away, or will he keep the current roster intact? What defensemen would you be willing to part with?

5) Who will prevail as the Leafs’ starting goaltender next season, Vesa Toskala or Jonas Gustavsson?

6) Would do you think is primed for a breakout season on the Leafs? Is there a player you think will fall short of expectations?

7) Are you content with the moves Burke has made thus far? What would you have done differently?

8 ) Who will be the Leafs’ top point producer next season? How many goals, assists and points will he score?

9) On a scale of 1 to 10, how much ass will the Leafs kick in terms of fighting next season?

10) Will the Leafs make the playoffs?

You stay classy, MLHS.

    1. No. He will be in the line up on opening nite and will score a pp goal.
    2. top prospect/1st or 2nd round pick.
    3. Zherdev on a 1 or 2 year deal.
    4. He will deal.Finger,Van Ryn,Frogren.
    5. Toskala
    6. Kulemin will score 30 goals. Gustavvson will be learning, so don’t get your hopes up just yet.
    7. He is building his team, some good moves, need a few more yet, patience is needed.
    8. Grabovski – 33 g, 37 a , 70p
    9. 9 – much tougher team to play, fun to watch.

@ redonred – Lucic? there’s no doubt in my mind that Colton Orr will put him in his place this year.. that said, all around, i like Lucic – however, for a heavyweight guy, he sure seems to go after the middleweights quite a lot..

Orr will kill Lucic. Lucic isnt an idiot like Komisarek and he will stay in his weight division prolly. Unless he pulls a BJ Penn

    Some notes from above posts:
    - meant to say Leaf top scorer – Grabovski – 22g 42a – 66 pts (IF he stays in one piece)
    - agree mostly with posts of The King, Jayman, Luke Schenn and borkensilence
    - someone say Luke Schenn will have difficulties this year – why – better supporting cast
    - d-man traded – Frogren? – This is the guy that helped get us Gustavsson – he stays!
    - Sign Sundin to cheap contract? Are you kidding? This is the new era!
    - Someone mentioned signing Marc-Andre Bergeron. Why? One reason? Maybe if Kabs and White go?
    - Jason Blake! Jason Blake! Last year at this time people were ready to run Blake and JFJ out of town. Now he’s the next coming! Funny how one season can change a person’s perspective, isn’t it?
    - Same goes for Vesa Toskala! Last year, goal-tending was NO problem. Now – trade Tosks at the deadline! Could he be our rep at the all-star game? (big bounce-back season!)
    - Someone wants to trade for Brooks Laich and Michael Nylander! Wow! Laich, 3rd line max potential (unless with Ovechkin or Malkin) – Nylander – yesteryear material!
    - Sign Alex Tanguay for mega $$$ – I think “not!” This guy has gone from Colorado-Calgary-Montreal-free agent. Might there be a problem here?
    - Not many suggested that Victor Stalberg might be our biggest surprise package this year. Reported to be our most NHL ready prospect. Why do WE not respect this guy more? Could be a major surprise!
    - After reading all the above posts – makes one realize that there are “different strokes for different folks”, doesn’t it. We all have our own Leaf opinions! Great stuff! I respect you all!

@ Lucic is heavy weight size he is 6′ 4″ 220 and Orr 6’3″ 222 why would he be an idiot. But he will get thumped. Orr is a tough SOB, he can take a shot or two, dont know if Lucic can

There is no player in the game that can do what Lucic does. Lucic can flat out hit, fight and play. He can hold his own with ANY player in the NHL. I’d take him on the Leafs in a heartbeat.

@Alex – Gawd that’s a good question! But don’t you think you have two different players here – Beauchemin the offensive man – and Komisarek more physical and more “shut-down”?
What do you say we pair them together? Perfect!!!

Beauchemin. He’s been a better thus far, and I see no reason why he should get worse.

@Alex – of course, in reference to my previous post – Komisarek is bigger and seven years younger – so one would tend to go with him.
However, having said that, as a GM, it depends on how much cap space you have. Have lots – it’s Komisarek!
The best player this season – like I said before – Komisarek defensive and physical edge, Beauchemin offensive edge! Given a choice $$$ wise, I’ll take Komo!

@ Garrett, I think that Burke plans on pairing Komisarek with Kaberle, as evidenced by his comments in the papers these last couple days.

Beauchemin and Schenn is going to be an outstanding shutdown pair.

However, it should be noted that these guys aren’t exactly perfect though. Beauchemin’s coming off a severe injury, and Komisarek had a bit of a disappointing year in Montreal.

We also shouldn’t expect a ton of offense out of Beauchemin. I’d say something along the lines of 8G, 22A for 30 points would be the high mark.

@ Alex, agreed that 30pts is probably the max. Ive been reading a lot of people getting excited to see Komisareks ‘blast from the point’ too ( not in this post but over the last couple of weeks ) Those people are going to be pretty disappointed i think. Komi is a fierce shutdown competitor but thats about it. His game is sound in all areas but not above average. I look forward to seeing them both play but i’m going in with realistic expectations. If they have a good number of hits/blocked shots and not too many ‘bad’ penalties i’ll be happy. if they can chip in 15-20 points…great

    1. Kaberle has a 75% chance of bein in da lineup in my books.
    2. Roster player, prospect & 1st round pick hopefully
    3. I’m down with signing Zherdev. Seems unlikely but I would like 2 see wat this guy would do if given 1st line + 1st PP time. If we can’t get him I’d take a flyer on Vaclac Prospal(eventho he wasnt 1 of the options)
    4. The only D i would want gone is Finger, but thats unlikely so I’d say trade Frogren or MVR. They’re both a lil more tradeable then Finger.
    5. Hands down Toskala will prevail. Can’t hand the Monster the reins until we see wat this guy can actually do…
    6. I’m hopin Tlusty n Grabovski hav breakout seasons. Kulemin too. But my expectations aren’t high. I can’t think of any1 i wanna name who will fall short of expectations. becuz its hard to fall short when the expectations aren’t high in the 1st place!
    7. I’m happy with what BB has done thus far. I only wish the Kessel trade could’ve gone thru. I can’t wait to see this team kick the Shit out of opponents! lol
    8. I think Grabovski will be the top point producer. Ill give him 25G, 40A, 65P… Here’s hopin Kulemin or Tlusty scores 30G!!
    9. I’m goin wit 11!! This team is gonna rip teams to shreds!! MMMMM cant wait lol.
    10. I think the Leafs will end up 7th or 8th. But will get smoked in the 1st round!! Even if they don’t make the playoffs and get a nice draft pick, I ain’t complainin!!!
