Via Darren Dreger of TSN, goaltender Justin Pogge has been traded to the Anaheim Ducks. The deal is expected to be completed on Monday, with Toronto receiving a conditional late round pick that can improve based on Pogge’s play.

The Maple Leafs have also signed free agent goaltender Joey Macdonald to provide some depth on the Marlies. The 29 year old Macdonald played 49 games for the New York Islanders last season, posting a 3.37 GAA and .901 SV%.

I think that I have a better chance at physically biting my own ass than the likes of Williams, Stapleton, Stralman, and Pogge coming back to bite the Leafs’ ass. Stralman and Pogge were given every opportunity to shine amongst an otherwise dull surroundings. I personally like the executive decisions made by BB and co. This is a necessary part of the rebuilding process. The entire mindset of the organization must be changed, accountability is now the rule rather than the exception. At the end of the day BB still looks good – he cut ties with a player who he wanted to dump while maintaining his Robin Hood-like character of supposedly “allowing unfit players to find a new home”, and making sure an incentive-driven (in Pogge, that is) draft pick comes back in return. So, what’s the problem?

Toronto will NEVER get a franchise forward IE: Taylor Hall, Tavarez, Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin. I wish we could though. The closest will be a Nash,Gaborik type guy via free agency but there both locked up long term now!

I would not believe, any real fan would wish to lose, I certainly do not, but sometimes it is always good to have alternative goals for such instance. I feel that, unlike many, that our Leaf team is not that far off from attaining the goal of the cup. We lack 1 to 2 players, of elite status and there is no team in the league we could not beat in a 7 game series. Where do we get those players? That is where the suggestions of trying to attain the first overall pick or the trade of Kaberle, comes into play and we all need to trust BB can come to the best conclusion.

Never will we get a franchise forward ie: Gilmour, Sundin, Mogilny, Nieuwendyk, Lindros, etc.

Granted the list is weak in parts, but there’s a draft every year, there’s free agents and there’s trades. I just mean never say never, man.

Right on Lescott, never is a big word, and really nobody know where that next great one is coming from, he doesn’t always have to be the first overall selection

@Wook – agree with your assessment!
Biran Burke promised Pogge he would find him a home – and he did! Don’t think that potential UFA’s don’t make note of this – Brian Burke is a man of his word when it comes to players , like someone said before, “a player’s GM!” That can only bode well for the future as well as the past (Bozek, Hansen, Gustavsson, Komisarek, Orr, Beauchemin).
Look it, Pogge had what, three years, to prove himself, is that correct, or was it four – and still was playing back-up in crucial games. Tell you something? IF Pogge was such a great potential future star in the NHL, don’t you think that the other NHL teams would have been knocking on our door for this guy’s rights? So we got a late round draft choice – keep him another year and we might get el zippo!
Good deal under the circumstances! Someone mention Jacob Markstrom? Niow there’s a prospect!

Seems like Kaberle may not be dealt now! However if he is, any chance the Rangers would throw in Evgeny Grachev in a deal? A possible franchise centre! Or is Grachev KHL bound? Not sure if the Rangers have cap room for Kabs now that Zherdev is off the books?
I’m sure guys like Grachev, Chris Kreider and Bobby Sanguinetti would interest the Leafs. Two of these three for Kabs?

Sakic was 15th and Yzerman was 4th and they are prototypical franchise players. Datsyuk was drafted 800th and Zetterberg was drafted 900th.

Really, it’s a good sign that we haven’t had a first overall pick since Clark (?), we just need to draft better. Furthermore, Burke seems to do really well with free agents.

This move could be disastrous. Burke made a mistake here which I’m sure most will disagree with but imo he did. With no other goalie prospect coming back we could be in some trouble if Gustavson doesn’t end up being our long term solution. That’s a gamble that I wouldn’t have taken. We gave up on Pogge way too early. If some how he doesn’t pan out and Toskala looks just as bad as last season were looking very bad in goal and will have to look at free agency again. Incredibly dumb move imo.

The more I think about it, the easier it is to take this deal. As much as I would have loved to see the Leafs hold onto Pogge and develop him, I know there is just no room for him here and it would only hinder Reimer’s career.
Since I have always like Pogge, it’s actually kind of nice to see Burke cut him free and give him a chance on the West Coast, where Anaheim will likely unload Giguere at some point, promote Hiller to full-time starter and slide Pogge into the backup role.
    ~
Burke is definelty a Players GM – the list of guys he has given a chance somewhere else includes:
Bryzgalov (Ducks to Coyotoes), Kronwall, Bell, Stralman and Pogge.
I guess to a lesser degree you could even include his deadline deals of Antropov and Moore as it gave the players a chance to play some meaniful games in April. Although it was more of Burke wanting to get something for them before their contracts expired, allowing them to become UFAs.

I’d have been a lot happier with this trade had we taken any of a number of stellar goaltending prospects at the draft this year.
I can’t say I was one of the “wait and see” crowd regarding Pogge, mental fragility would suggest his career will end in Europe in a money league like the Swiss so a conditional pick is fair all around, part payback for taking Allaire.
As for Joey McDonald, career numbers hover around .900, a solid set of figures for an emergency jump in.

This trade is opening the door for Anaheim to trade jsg and Pogge will back up Hiller. this is by no mean a trade to help our team (leafs) right now. This is Burke being Burke and actually caring for the players he has in front of him. He knows Pogge is due a chance to crack a lineup and well this is not the lineup (leafs) he is going to crack. The smaller hockey market will help Pogge out.

Now Burke can we move to forwards? even if it is to restock the Marlies for this year?

    @ leafybits
Kaberle a forward? Not gonna happen my friend. Not aggressive enough to be a forward, he’d get destroyed, robbed, etc. along the boards, besides, why would you mess with success, I’ve heard he’s really good at what he does.

@Schenn … You should also include Harrison and Williams. Young guys that Burke let go so they can find a better place for themselves.

Looks like it is a 2011 6th rounder, if Pogge plays 30 NHL games over the next 2 seasons it could improve to a 3rd rounder.

Nice guy BB is, but nice guys finish last…Believe me, this will come back to haunt the Leafs….anyone old enough to remember when the leafs gave up on a young Bernie Parent? The Flyers won three Stanley Cups with him in net, we got Doug Favell, who we later sent to the Colorado Rockies with another young defencemen we gave up on, Joel Quennville,…How do you say a Goalie that is 20 something is not going to have potential?, Goalies have proven their best in their 30′s…ie: Kipper, Hope Toskala has a career year….
