Don’t Underestimate White

Ian White, he is perhaps the Toronto Maple Leafs‘ most underrated defenseman. And how, you ask? It’s simple: White has the potential to produce 10-15 goals and 40-45 points next season.

After reading through The Hockey News’ fantasy pool guide magazine, I couldn’t help but notice White was nowhere to be found in their list of 350+ projections of skaters and goalies. So I flipped to the page dedicated to the Leafs—an underwhelming vague page at that—and found White in their projections. They predicted him for a measly 18 points, ranking him at the very bottom of their list. No explanation, no nothing.

White, who is 25 years-old, and produced an impressive 10 goals and 26 points in 71 games played, is expected to be trending down, according to The Hockey News. But I guess they forgot he made Team Canada in the IIHF World Hockey Championships—which was unfortunately cut short due to a neck injury. I guess they forgot he scored 10 goals (eight of those at even-strength) and averaged 22:50 of ice-time. I guess they forgot he was tied for first on the team in +/- with +6. He also ranked second among Leafs defensemen in shots with 158 with a shooting percentage of 6.8%.

Make no mistake; White is an asset to the Leafs. And this is only the beginning for the versatile rearguard, who played in his third campaign in the National Hockey League last season. Consider that defensemen generally take longer to develop in the big league, so this could be White’s coming-out party. Also, history shows us that a number of NHL players have broke-out in their fourth seasons. Will this be the case with White? Who knows, but if Brian Burke‘s plan to give the offensive-minded players more room to play by importing more toughness to lineup proves to be successful, then you can bet White will be a direct beneficiary.

While White may lack the size and physicality of an ideal top-four defenseman, his skill and hockey sense allow him to make quick and logical decisions in his own end. He can also make a strong first pass out of the zone. Granted, White has been caught flat-footed in his own end before, and does require some seasoning in the defensive end. However, it’s his presence in the offensive end that makes him a valuable commodity. Not only does he have a booming shot from the point, but he’s aware of his surroundings and can set-up a play just as easily as he puts the puck in back of the net. And as far as leadership is concerned, you’ll never see White flee away from the media, as he is often found voicing his concern (hey, last season was no treat) with the club.

This leads me to the departure of Pavel Kubina. Kubina, who was a staple with Tomas Kaberle on the powerplay, was lethal from the point, scoring 14 goals. This pushed White down the depth chart on the PP, and he was forced to play second-unit minutes.

But no more, folks. It’s White’s time to shine. Even though newcomer Francois Beauchemin will surely be penciled in as Kaberle’s PP partner, I believe it will only be a matter of time before White overtakes the position, and proves all the naysayers wrong. While Beauchemin is a presence on the PP, his career-high in goals is 9, which means White has him beat in that department already. If there’s anyone who could come close to repeating the magic between Kaberle and Bryan McCabe on the PP from seasons past, it’s White.

Some have mentioned converting White to a forward as an option, and perhaps it is worth a try, but personally, I’d much rather the roster spot be given to players such as Tyler Bozak or Christian Hanson, as White would require a position in the top-six to be effective, considering his physical shortcomings.

While White may be used as #5 defenseman five-on-five, he’s going to be lethal on the PP, and log a whole lot of minutes.

I guarantee it.

Plus, he totally has a badass mustache. Why would you underestimate him to begin with?

Bold prediction: 13 goals, 42 points

You stay classy, MLHS.

Thanks. Didn’t realize it was that low. Not surprising I guess for fourth line minutes, though I’d still like to see what he could do up front with some regular minutes. If he is to remain a D, I’d be okay with seeing him moved.

Just for the record…if Burke could get a top line centremen for a defencemen and wahtever…maybe Stajan…then I would move them, but I don;t think he will get anywhere near that right now! So I do see your points too!!

Reading the updated list of Leafs prospects from HF really gives you an appreciation of the job Burke has done since January. Of the top 10 on the list, BB has added 3 via undrafted entry level contracts, and 3 via the 2009 draft table. The key will be giving all of the top prospects the time and support to develop, and acclamate to each succeeding level. When they finally get there shot at a Leafs roster spot, they will hopefully be prepared with the knowledge and work ethic required to take their game up a few notches and make a lasting impact wearing blue and white.

    @ Capt. Morgan

Don’t forget Sifers as a Marlie call up as he had some decent games last year. I can see the leafs dressing seven D this year with frogren the odd man out. We also have a log jam up front so I can’t see White playing up there instead of one of the rookies, Bozak, Hanson Stalhberg tlusty

White will not get 45 points because he is going to have reduced minuets because of the depth at that position. Its going to be Kaberle and Beauchimen on the top PP pairing and white will be on the second pairing. He will also have diminished ice time on 5 on 5 situations so him getting 22.5 minuets of ice time is not going to happen this season making the chances of him repeating the production he had last season next to impossible.

Personally I think he gets traded for another forward. No one in their right mind is going to want Van Ryn so I think that White is realistically the leafs only trading chip.

Burke has managed to show that he is resourceful and capable of bringing in high end prospects to sign with the leafs. Along with the draft, this goes a long way to add depth to our prospect pool. It also doesnt seem to me that any will be rushed up to the NHL level. Burke has stated repeatedly that he doesnt think Kadri is ready. That’s refreshing for a change because there was a past regime that might of tried him out this year.

    Check this one out.

    And this one.

    http://www.torontosun.com/sports/hockey/2009/08/19/10509556-sun.html

May’be Boston is going to have no choice to either trade or let Phil go to an offer sheet.

And GB actually got an email that gave props to EK for saying that Kabs could still waive, but for probably the right deal.

We’ve only got 2.2 mil left…..may’be bury Mayers, Stemps, and Stajan in the minors, trade MVR,Frogren and White for picks and sign Kessel to an offer sheet, it wouldn’t be a bad idea, if Boston won’t trade.

Sorry to burst your bubble and ruin the White love-fest, but I’ve gotta agree with The Hockey News on this one.
To start, there just isn’t a spot in the Top 6 defence for him this year!! If Mike Van Ryn is healthy and stays healthy, he will be in the spot you guys just pegged White to play in.
The Top 4 is set with Schenn, Kaberle, Komisarek and Beauchemin. That leaves 2 spots open for Van Ryn, Finger, Exelby, White, Frogren and Oreskovic. Smart money’s on Van Ryn and Finger to fill the last 2 spots.

He is beginning to look just like he did with the Swift Current Broncos, can log incredible amount of ice time, power play specialist, can control the game from his own end , and a great passer. It just took a little time to adjust, and someone to give him the opportunity. Ian is the Real Deal.

I love reading these Schenn lovers. What has he done that is so magnificent other than being drafted in the first round. It’s like going to a real job after attending university. Who cares about the degree, its the real world now and just because you are smart in school, doesn’t mean you have what it takes on the job. Schenn looks like he will be a great player but he has to prove it other than his dominance playing with boys. The Leafs have to start putting the best performing players on the ice, not just the players they paid too much for or the ones they drafted in the first round. This is why the Leafs never get better. It’s hard to predict who win shine at camp but one thing that is for sure, the best dmen should play come opening day and you should earn your spot on the team, not have it handed to you. Last year White got sat for the first dozen games, didn’t complain, just worked hard and had some of the best stats of all the dmen during the year. Please tell me how a guy that busts his ass, shows results, and keeps quiet doing it doesn’t play. If you did that with your employees in business you’de be looked at as an idiot.

    My 2 cents….
