Grabovski a No.1?

With Brian Burke opting to bolster the Toronto Maple Leafs’ defense this off-season, many critics have pondered whether the current group of forwards are talented enough to propel the Leafs into the playoffs.

That question depends largely on the Leafs’ young forwards, such as Nikolai Kulemin, Jiri Tlusty, Matt Stajan and Mikhail Grabovski. But amongst those listed, one player in particular will be expected to lead the charge offensively. And that is the ultra-talented but inconsistent Grabovski.

In his first season with the Buds, the enigmatic Grabovski proved he was worthy of a full-time spot, posting an impressive 20 goals and 48 points. While he was scratched mid-season for a few games, it was all a part of the learning curve for the young Belorussian,  who gradually improved his game as the season progressed. While his offensive skills were never in question, his work ethic and commitment to the team were. But he rose to the occasion, and proved to be a feisty, passionate and, at times, explosive player.

But the question still lingers if Grabovski has the skill set required to become the team’s future No.1 center. Opinions vary, and it’s perhaps to early to determine, but there’s no reason why we can’t speculate.

Grabovski’s potential resides in his offensive game. His hockey sense, stick handling and speed make him a threat in the oppositions zone. His 48 points as a rookie, albeit at 24 years-old, is impressive, so there’s no telling what he’s capable of in the future. He did show flashes of greatness last season, so if he can add some consistency to his game, there’s no doubt he could cross the 60-point barrier in no time.

Consider this: last season Grabovski averaged 16:13 of ice-time, and managed to be a 50-point player, as a rookie. And it’s not as if he had star linemates either. On the powerplay, he was tied for 2nd in goals with 6, and 4th in points with 15, ranking him ahead of Alexei Ponikarovsky, Nik Antropov and Matt Stajan, who all averaged more PP TOI.

With Antropov gone, that leaves the No.1 center position vacant. And the most logical candidate for the position is Grabovski. But is he deserving of the position? We shall see, but the last thing the Leafs want is for him to think he is entitled to the position, as that is the attitude Brian Burke is trying to eliminate from the Leafs dressing room. Grabovski is aware of the current situation, but if he begins to loaf due to a lack of competition, there’s no doubt that he’ll be sent back to the press box in a matter of games. Attitude will go a long way in determining his future with the Leafs.

The likely scenario will see Grabovski taking the reigns as the No.1 center, and flourishing under the added ice-time and responsibility. But, like anything Leafs related, it’s no sure bet, so it’s best not get overly excited just yet. And suppose he does hit somewhere between 50-60 points, does that make him a candidate as the team’s long-term No.1 center? Does he have what it takes? We know he’s decent in his own end and has an edge to his game, so what’s lacking?

The ideal No.1 center is capable of posting anywhere from 70-80 points, if you compare to other teams’ centers. Does Grabovski have the skill to post those kind of numbers? Personally, I don’t think so. I think he’ll will find his niche as a player who consistently produces in the 60’s. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. In fact, that would cement him as the team’s No.2 center, and personally, I’d be content knowing he’s on our top-six each and every game.

The problem with Grabovski is that he lacks the physical edge to allow him to compete against other teams’ top-pairing defensemen. He’s often knocked off the puck, or brought to the ground by any sort of physical contact. And there lies the problem. If he’s the main cog on offense, the opposition will shut him down with relative ease once they figure out his weaknesses—and lack of size and strength can be a big problem. As a No.2, however, he’d be expected to support the top-line, and he’d play against lesser defensemen, which is the most important thing.

Can he do it? Sure. Is it likely? Not in my opinion.

What do you think? Does Grabovski have the pugnacity, testosterone,  truculence and belligerence to be the Leafs’ long-term No.1 center?

You stay classy, MLHS.

@Keon – the person in question is being called a stalker because they are following me around, referring to me as usernames I use in other places and taking personal and professional potshots whenever they can.. At one point, he threatened physical assault.. If you do not want your amigo to be called a stalker, you should consider advising him to stop behaving like one.. as for your other comments, I will let them slide.. again, if you do not like my opinion, ignore it.. I am not the one trying to force, under threat of physical violence no less, my opinion onto others.. you do not agree with me, that is fine.. dont.. there is no reason for you or anyone else to get upset over my opinion.. heck, last time I checked, I never threatened anyone or followed them around the internet making comments because I do not not have the same assessment of Stajan as they do…

@Rang – older European rookies typically do not suffer the same softmore jinx younger NA rookies suffer.. I can only speculate this is because they have already gone through those growing pains in other leagues earlier in their careers… Typically speaking, older Europeans toughest year is their first years…

@Jordan – agree with pretty much everything you have said… I also hope Tlusty has a spot on the team and in the top6.. unfortunately, until 2 of Blake, Stempniak and Poni are moved, I am not sure it will happen…

    @Cartika
You need to grow up. If you thought you could move blog sites change user names and still cry over spilled milk then you are mistaken. I threatened with physical assault? I would suggest that you probably have been told many times that you are the type of person that people would like to punch in the mouth. I believe the exact words you used to start it were “it’s like talking to a briick wall” and expected me to bow down to you as if you had the only opinion in the world. If you ever supported your opinions I may have said I accept but to this day you haven’t.
    .
Who comes on a blog site like this and announces that he runs an IT company? I have pointed out your smug remarks and how you talk down to everyone on several occasions and then this.
    .
There I have said my piece and I’m done with it.

@honesthockey – this is all because you do not agree with my opinion. I strongly urge you to cease.. I have several usernames I use on the internet, including Andrew R, Andrew, Cartika and Cartika-Andrew. I am not hiding from anything or anyone. I also urge you to hold some perspective – there was a conversation around people taking IT courses and how useless they are as someone was doing roofing with one of those degrees, and I simply mentioned I run an IT company and the courses or lack thereof do not have a lot to do with employment status in the industry. Listen man, I am not sure what comes next, but, if I come home and find my kids bunny boiling in a pot, I will know where to look (just a little stalker joke for those old enough to remember the reference). I have NEVER seen anyone get this upset because they disagree with a couple of player transactions.. heck, should I start slinging mud at you and following you around because I think your opinions on Stajan are misplaced? Honestly man, get a grip – as for punching me in the mouth.. as I said, I am not on here anonymously, I am easy to find, I am in the press all the time, I speak at seminars and conferences and am as public of an individual you will ever find on the internet.. I encourage you to alter your behaviour..

I’m not upset about a couple of player transactions you are the one who continues to find ways to let that be known even if somewhat veiled. Grow up and get over yourself. You do not know more then Burke about the Leaf situation in regards to personnel.
    .
The IT answer would be that there are opportunities in the industry. Period. But not with you and if you hadn’t been so smug on HB I would have never commented. I could care less who you are and what you do.
    .
You encourage me to alter my behaviour like you are my boss. You are not my boss and believe me never would be. And I am old enough to get your reference even though you had to throw it in there as if un-veiling some knowledge that you know others cannot possess.
    .
I suggest to you that you review your arrogant condesending writing style before you critique all other opinions.

    .
Who said I was upset? You announced to the world two weeks ago that you were going to stop debating this issue, but yet here you are, still lamenting these moves. Even when you’re responding to other topics, you constantly drop in a line or two related to these two insignificant deals… will it ever end? You even changed boards and usernames, why? What were trying to hide from? Possibly comments you made on a rival board?
    .
And as far as anyone taking potshots at people, I’ll I can say is pot. You may think your snide remarks are too intelligent for people to comprehend, but in reality, they’re not. You started this entire debate, didn’t like it when people challenged your opinion and proceeded to insult.
    .
As long as you continue to slander people on these sites, I will continue to respond to your posts. And if you don’t like my opinion, follow your own advice… ignore them.

Hey guys ….. been coming to the site for a while but first time participating. Wondering how Stefanovich would do on a line with Grabovski and Kulemin. From what I’ve read and in looking at his stats Stefanovich appears to be a pure goal scorer. Grabovski generates more assists than goals if you look at his year to year stats and could make a great set up man for him. Both are Belarussian which helps in the communication between the two. Kulemin is a perfect complement to these two players as he is a strong two-way player. Thoughts? I don’t think Grabovski is a #1 center ….. these could be a great second line for the Leafs in the next couple of years.

For all those who are wondering why I would place Stajan on “Line 1B” and Tlusty on “Line 3″ and not the other way around.
    ~
This is my simple explanation. I believe Stajan is a better Center and Tlusty is a better winger. Thats all there was to it. But upon reading and being called out to explain myself, here is what I have come up with:
    1) Stajan is proven, while Tlusty is not
    2) Maybe having Tlusty on the 3rd line with more defensively inclined players will encourage him to play better defensive hockey and help develop him into a more complete player
    ~
As for those that have said Mr. Burke said that if the young offensive players aren’t in a Top 6 role, they will be starting the season with the Marlies.
Let me ask you this, “Since when has Brian Burke been named the coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs?”
