Competition Breeds Success

This must be the mantra Brian Burke is following after recent reports indicate that Jason Allison has been invited to the Leafs training camp on a tryout basis.  Some of you remember Allison from his 2005-2006 season with Toronto.  He was often seen losing in casual races with the young children of Timbits Hockey.  At 34 years of age and having not played for full three seasons, this move probably has some Leafs fans scratching their heads and worrying that John Ferguson Jr. has somehow been reintroduced into the organization.

However, there is no need for worry as an objective view of this situation renders it in to a no-lose scenario for the Maple Leafs.  There are of course no obligations associated with this tryout and thus management is of the mindset that they may as well see what the North York native has left in his tank.  All kidding aside, Jason did have the rare ability to slow the game down to his pace (quite the accomplishment with Allison).  Moreover, he had a knack for holding onto the puck when he needed to and distributing it efficiently, mostly on the powerplay.

That being said, his time has come and gone.  While a 60 point (in 66 games) season with Toronto post-lockout should have garnered him a contract in the 2006-2007 campaign, the fact that he has been on the sidelines for these three years is as potent an indicator as any.  There is realistically no room on this rebuilding club for an aging forward with vague powerplay potential at best.  This is a move from Burke and his team that follows two of his governing philosophies.

The first is that he is a player’s GM.  Allison contacting Toronto and requesting this tryout ability was probably met with the realization that if anything, it would allow him to showcase his skills to other interested clubs.  More importantly, Burke has reiterated that he wants the competition to be fierce this September.  No jobs are safe.  This will merely add to this message in his locker room and ensure that nobody steps on the ice in a few weeks time with anything but the utmost desire to exceed expectations.

Cheers,

Nikhil

    In other news, Brian Burke will be holding a press conference on Monday to introduce his new special adviser: John Ferguson Junior!

    Wendel was the greatest leader EVER to wear the Leaf jersey. That guy had the uncanny ability to change the momentum of a game with one shift. And he could do it more often than not. I remember many times, him going out with his high energy (although he was a lousy skater) and make a couple of great hits and I would get the biggest adrenaline rush just watching. The croud and bench would go nuts. He was one of a kind for the Leafs. Roberts didn’t even come close (not knocking Gary).

    @canucksnaphook
    Happy to say Wendel was a Leaf, it was a pleasure watching him play, one of the best all round hockey players to play the game IMO.
    @sparky
    OMG are we doing the “taking a spot from someone much younger” thing again … I’ll say it again, there is only so many spots on the roster … young or old it is who is best equipped to play in the league. The younger guys will get their chance if they deserve it but we can’t rush the young guys, they need time to develop on the farm. This organization doesn’t need to destroy any more young players careers by rushing them into the bigs.

    @TuckerThomas
    Wendel was one of the few players I ever saw that could turn a game around in one shift. Gary Roberts although he wasn’t Wendel was awesome as well … he carried the entire team on his back if I remember correctly (can blame that on a misspent youth) during the 2003/4 playoffs.

    We all have an image in our heads of how each player on our roster should be expected to play to live up their full potential and help this team win. Burke and Wilson share that same image as all of us. They also (given all the evidence) have an expectation of each player to play as hard as possible and be in better shape than any other player on any other roster. Therefor, anyony, dinosaur or junior sensation, not living up to both our or BB + RW’s expectations will not play will be sitting in the press box or playing for the marlies.

    I just hope that as close to 23 of our 50 roster players are living up to those expectations as possible. If so (and its quite possible given all the hard work in the offseason) we are a lot closer than one might think to you know what! I believe we are in for a GREAT season. And I’m so glad to make comments like this and not have a buncha Habs fans cut me to pieces.

    Well I still think in all honesty we are probably we are about 6 players away from being a real contender but for the first time in a long time I have some hope and can see that we are moving in the right direction.

    Yeah it is nice to shoot the sh*t with some actual Leaf fans and not have to be bothered with those pesky Habs fans

    Wow, I don’t know if anyone has posted this yet, but Kovalev made some interesting comments regarding Ottawa – “Ottawa was kind of the last choice for us. If we didn’t sign, we were going to end up some place else for one year.”

    Snap. As much as I glory in the Sens misfortunes, they are in one hell of a sorry state.

    Not bad B Leaf……I like the thought behind it, but I seriously doubt that our goalies will post a .915 GAA just not going to happen. I would love to see it, I am sick of watching crap goaltending in Toronto.

    And when it comest to blocking shots, dont downplay the role Komisarek will play in the dept. This kid is going to have one hell of a bounce back year and demolish montreal in the process.
